Secretary - Michele Klaas www.port-huron.k12.mi.us/Garfield Message from the Principal . . .

October 2011
Dear Parents, Our new school year is off to a great start; our staff and students are working together each day to make the most of the time they are together. All of our K-5 students just completed the DIBELS reading assessment and our third, fourth and fifth grade teachers are preparing our students for the state assessment, the MEAP. This will take place from October 11 27. The data from these assessments helps our teachers identify the strengths of our students and develop plans to work on areas needing improvement. This school year, the District is continuing its working agreement with the International Center Leadership in Education, (ICLE). Working with ICLE, we will continue to evaluate our school, look at our strengths and weaknesses and update our plan that will assist us in improving the educational opportunities for all of our students. We look forward to focusing on the positive things we do and providing improved educational programming for your children. We will continue to seek parent and community input as it takes all of us working together to ensure our schools are able to meet the needs of all of our students. One way to keep up on the happenings in the school and be provided with an opportunity to give your input is to attend our School Advisory/Parent Teacher Association meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm in the newly refinished meeting room upstairs. We discuss the schools day to day activities as well as long term projects and commitments. On Tuesday, October 4, we will be holding our Title I Annual meeting; at this time we will discuss the many components of our Title I program, its offerings to students, the home/school compact and the building parent involvement policy to name a few. I invite you to attend and take an active part in your childs education. Working together, we will prepare your child for the future. Join us, wont you?

Accelerated Reader

Tardy Slip
For the safety of our students, all entrance doors are locked by 8:30 a.m. with the exception of our MAIN ENTRANCE DOORS. If your child is late for school, he/she must enter the office to receive a tardy slip before walking to their classroom. This is to ensure that your childs attendance is changed from absent to tardy. If your child does not stop in for a tardy slip, he/she may be marked absent and the office will not know if they are in the building, therefore a call home may be made to inquire as to why your child his absent.

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places youll go. -Dr. Seuss The Accelerated Reader (AR) Program provides a fun and exciting way to promote reading at home and in the classroom. It is a computerized testing program that increases literature- based reading. There are a wide variety of AR books available in our media centers and individual classrooms. These range from a first grade reading level and higher. The children are able to check out, read, and test on these books to earn points toward ice cream parties and year end rewards.
