Lab - Describing the effect of the parameter A on the graph of a parabola given by
Y  A( X  H ) 2  K

Formulas and Concepts:

• If the leading coefficient of a quadratic function is positive, its graph is concave up
and the function has a minimum value. If the leading coefficient is negative, its graph
is concave down and the function has a maximum value.
• If the function is given in the form y  a ( x  h)  k . the vertex is (h, k ) .
2

 If the function is given in the form y  ax  bx  c , the x-coordinate of the vertex is

b
x . To find the y-coordinate, substitute this value into the original functions.
2a
You need to be able to interpret the vertex in context.
• The x-intercepts occur where the output, or y-coordinate = 0.
• You can solve ax 2  bx  c  0 by factoring, completing the square, or by the quadratic
formula:
b  b 2  4ac
x
2a
 A function of the form y  ax is a power function, with b  0 , where a and b are real
b

numbers.
1
• Root functions are of the form y  ax n ; Reciprocal functions are of the form
1
f ( x) 
x
 The graph of g ( x)  f ( x )  k is the graph of f ( x) shifted up k units
 The graph of g ( x)  f ( x )  k is the graph of f ( x) shifted down k units
 The graph of g ( x)  f ( x  k ) is the graph of f ( x) shifted right k units
 The graph of g ( x)  f ( x  k ) is the graph of f ( x) shifted left k units
 The parameter c in y  cf ( x) causes a vertical stretch or compression
 When taking a composite, you do the “outside” function on the output of the “inside”
function. You need to be able to do these in context.
 Only one-to-one functions have inverses.
 The inverse of a function “undoes” the original function. You need to be able to do
these in context and interpret the meaning of the inverse.
 The graph of a function and its inverse are symmetric with respect to the line y  x

topping. Thus if you order a large pizza with x toppings, the price of your pizza is given by
f ( x)  7  2 x . Find f 1 and explain what it represents.
