WHAT IS THIS LESSON ABOUT?

This lesson deals with the importance of personal hygiene in the growth and development of thye personality of an individual.

LETS STUDY

Hygiene refers to the set of practice associated with the preservation of health and healthy living. It is derived from HYGEIA, the Greek goddess of health, cleanliness and sanitation. The terms cleanliness (or cleaning) and hygiene are often used interchangeably, which can cause confusion. In general, hygiene mostly means practices that prevent spread

ofdisease-causing organisms. Since cleaning processes ( e.g., hand washing) remove infectious microbes as well as dirt and soil, they are often the means to achieve hygiene.

KINDS OF HYGIENE:

1. Community Hygiene Individual members of the community play an important rolein community hygiene, and havearesponsibility to their neighbors and to their community to promote good health and a clean environment. Everyone in the community must keep his house and compound clean, because one dirty house can affect many conscientious neighbors and contribute to the spread of disease. Community leaders can promote cleanliness in the home by regularly checking on households and by using by-laws to encourage household maintenance. Some health measures can be undertaken only by the community as a whole. These includes: a. Water source protection

Household water treatment and safe storage are practices which can be used by the family at home and in the community to ensure that drinking water is safe for consumption. Methods for treatment of drinking water, include: Chemical disinfection using chlorine or iodine Boiling Filtration using ceramics filters Solar disinfection. It is an effective method, especially when no chemical disinfectants are available UV irradiation. Community or household UV systems may be batch or flow through Combined flocculation/disinfection systems available as sachets of powder which act by coagulating and flocculating sediments in water followed by release of chlorine Multi-barrier methods. Some systems used 2 or more of the above treatments in combination of in succession to optimize efficacy.
