he Department of Economics offers programs of study leading to the degrees of MA in Economics, and PhD in Economics. The Department currently is located in the MacKinnon Building and has over 25 full time faculty, 20 PhD and 24 MA students. Students have access to a collection of discussion papers, journals and government publications, as well as a local area computer network. The Department employs a full-time computer coordinator who supports faculty and graduate students in their software and hardware needs. The MacKinnon Building contains a computer lab exclusively for use by graduate students. The Department has a full program of weekly seminars by visiting speakers. In addition there are internal lunchtime workshops in which faculty and graduate students present results of their research work. Career Opportunities Graduates in Economics have gone on to careers in - academics - financial consulting - medical associations - government - research to name a few.

MA Degree Requirements The University requires that students have completed a four year Honours degree, or equivalent, from a recognized post-secondary institution with a minimum B- average over the last two years of full-time equivalent study. Usually it takes three semesters to complete the requirements for the MA, though it is possible to intensify the program and complete in two semesters. Most students are admitted on a three-semester program and applicants from overseas must be able to finance this length of program. MA in International Development The Department participates in an inter- disciplinary program in International Development in collaboration with the Departments of Geography, Political Studies, and Sociology and Anthropology. Applicants for this program choose to enter through one of the participating departments, and course selections

Application Deadline Students applying to the MA or PhD programs, who wish to be considered for financial support, must have their applications in by the end of January. Applications received after the end of January and before the end of April will be considered for the second round of admission offers, but financial assistance is less likely to be offered in this round. Applications received after the end of April will be considered for admission but normally will not be eligible for financial assistance. Application Procedure Students applying to a graduate program at the University of Guelph are required to apply online. The online application will take approximately 40- 60 minutes. The application fee for most graduate programs in $100 and is payable to the OUAC. Applicants must provide: 1) the completed, signed application form, two or three letters of reference, sealed transcripts from all post-secondary institutions and an English as a Second Language score/results. PhD Degree Requirements Applicants to the PhD program usually hold

academic standing. The program requires the satisfactory completion of courses covering core theory, quantitative methods, and two fields of specialization. The PhD requires up to 13 course
and areas of interest. Students with an MA will typically have completed some of the required units already and credit will be given where appropriate. The minimum duration for the PhD is 5 semesters of full-time study.

Location
The University of Guelph is located in the Southeast sector of the City of Guelph which has a population of just over 115,000. The campus is about 80 kilometers west of Toronto and 50 kilometers north of Hamilton. The city, serviced by Via Rail and by inter-city buses, is about 16 kilometers north of highway 401. The Hanlon Expressway (Highway 6) is about 1.5 kilometers west of the campus, and Highway 7 to Halton Hills and western Toronto 1.5 kilometers north. Bus service between the Square (2.5 kilometers), operates at regular intervals.

Current costs for one domestic graduate student at Guelph range from approximately $19,700 to $27,900 per year of study. Note that costs incurred may vary depending on many factors including, but not limited to lifestyle, whether family members accompany the student, exchange rates and the program itself.

Financial Assistance
Financial assistance is available mainly in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistantships, Bursaries and Scholarships. All applications are automatically considered for funding. Students need not apply separately. GTAs are awarded to many incoming graduate students on the basis of academic record and availability of funds. Continuation of support beyond the first semester is conditional on a satisfactory records of teaching assistance, Department needs for GTA services, and available funds. A full GTA is currently valued at $5260.10 per semester. The Economics Alumni Masters Scholarship, valued at $500, is awarded annually to the full-time regular MA student who has attained the highest cumulative average after the first two semesters of the Economics graduate program.

These active scholars, with well established publication records, are committed to excellence in teaching. The Department at present does not require the presentation of a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score. However, this score will be considered if submitted

Graduate Houses
Student Housing Services operates eight Graduate Houses which are located around the perimeter of the campus. All houses are shared accommodation in detached structures. Each Graduate House accommodates between four and six people. The majority of the Houses are close to the campus, between a five- and ten-minute walk to the University Centre.
