Above is a diagram of where all the planets where in the sky at the moment you were born - a "Vedic birth chart." Here is how to make some sense out of the symbols. There are three things shown here: houses, zodiac signs, and planets. The diamonds and triangles are the houses. The small symbols in the corners of the houses are the zodiac signs, they "build" the houses. The bigger symbols in the middle of the houses are the planets, they "occupy" the houses. This graphic shows how the houses are numbered, counterclockwise from the top. Here are the zodiac sign symbols: a - Aries, b Taurus, c - Gemini, d - Cancer, e - Leo, f Virgo, g - Libra, h - Scorpio, i - Sagittarius, j Capricron, k - Aquarius, l - Pisces. Here are the planetary symbols: A - Sun, B Moon, C - Mercury, D - Venus, E - Mars, F Jupiter, G - Saturn, L - Rahu, M - Ketu. All of your astrological information is encoded, in an extremely dense symbolic format, into the symbolism of this chart. It is a blueprint of all the karma that will affect you during this lifetime.

"Karma" - Freewill???
Lot's of people use the word karma, but honestly most of them don't understand what it means. Without understanding the concept clearly you may feel overwhelmed and helpless about many the things your astrologer tells you and many situations life puts you in. Karma is not "destiny." Karma includes destiny, that's true, but it also includes something else: freewill. Destiny refers to things that will happen to us, regardless of our efforts to obtain or avoid them. Freewill, on the other hand, refers to our freedom to make conscious choices about our life. Most people think these two are opposites. They aren't. They are two sides of the same reality. We have freewill, but with freedom comes responsibility. The universe grants us freedom, and holds us responsible for how we use that freedom. Destiny is Mother Nature giving us our just rewards for the way we have used our freewill up till now. Thus destiny is born from freewill! I make a choice. Mother Nature holds me responsible for it. If it was an enlightened choice, I earn a rewarding and enjoyable result as my destiny. But if it was a selfish choice, ignorant of my greater identity, I earn a difficult destiny, challenging me to improve such choices in the future. Thus, by both our rewards and our discouragements, karma is making us better people and evolving us closer towards our eventual enlightenment. The universe itself, "Mother Nature," enforces the law of karma. The Earth, sky, constellations and planets are her limbs. Their positions at the time of my birth can be read by the science of astrology, like reading the hands on the face of a clock. The astrological chart of these positions is a blueprint of my karma. Reading that blueprint correctly, I can understand what destinies will manifest in my life as a result of how I used my freewill in countless previous incarnations. We cannot change the destiny we have coming to us. Yet, we have every opportunity to use our freewill and decide what we will do with what destiny gives us. Astrology gives us foreknowledge into what is going to happen as a result of our destiny. This allows us to make wiser use of our freewill, to make better informed decisions about what to do with our destiny. In so doing, Astrology helps us take full control of our future!

Your Vedic Rising Sign

As the Earth spins, the stars out in space seem to rise in the East and set in the West. The zodiac constellation that was rising in the East when you were born is called your "Rising Sign." This becomes the main focal point for all the planets and stars and is the foundation of your entire astrological chart. The basic nature of the rising sign sets the background tenor of your horoscope, so now let's take a look at your rising sign and some of it's fundamental implications for you.

Gemini
Gemini's symbol varies slightly from culture to culture. In all cases there are two human beings, and in all cases they are youthful. The main difference is that in Western cultures two twins are seen as the symbol of Gemini, while Eastern Cultures consider a romantic couple to be the symbol. We have two humans - that much is sure. Human beings are special among earthly animals because they have the ability to exchange ideas back and forth through language and advanced communications, as a result of their highly developed intelligence. The ancients chose two humans as the symbol of Gemini to inform us that intellect, speech and communication are essential powers of this sign. The fact that these two humans are young and in some cases are lovers, shows that Gemini's intellect and communication is funloving, youthful, carefree. The most likely reason why the symbol of twins become dominant is that Gemini is the most fundamentally "dual" and multi-tasking of all the signs. Gemini explores all angles of things, never settling on one, always in search of something new to discuss, to understand, to explore, and to creatively invent. As such, the greatest weakness of Gemini is stability and tenacity. The first hint of boredom often stops Gemini dead in her tracks. Responsibilities which feel normal to others easily become weighty burdens begrudgingly borne in Gemini. This is the main obstacle Gemini faces in achieving lasting success, recognition, and relationships.

Your Rising Star

The solar zodiac is very well known and popular, with it's 12 signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, etc. But there is another zodiac which is less well known but equally important: the lunar zodiac. This zodiac has 27 signs, which are known as "lunar mansions" or nakshatras. They are smaller star groups within the 12 zodiac constellations which are extremely important and hold a wealth of useful information. Let's take a look at the lunar mansion rising in the East when you were born, your "rising star."

The Wet - Ardra

I translate Ardra as The Wet. In fact, Vedic astrology symbolizes this mansion with the image of a teardrop. This mansion is a place whose floors are damp, slippery and wet with tears. The Vedic deity who empowers this mansion is Rudra - the god of wailing and howling storms. Again the imagery comes of wetness and wailing. Clearly this mansion is not often the first pick on a list of vacation spots to visit. But then again if it werent for mansions like Ardra we would never put in the hard work needed to make the money it takes to visit a really nice vacation spot. So realize that this nakshatra is all about the effort it takes to grow in a new direction, and to thus finally and significantly improve your experience of life. The planet who owns this mansion is the turbulent and chaotic Rahu. Rahu is a force of upheaval and distress, yes - but Rahu is absolutely essential for the process of bringing about progress and change. Rahu influences this mansion to be a place where we can leave behind dead things - dead ideas, outlooks, attachments, and emotions - cry a bit over the parting, and then finally move on to better destinations. Under the influence of this mansion, this is exactly what you should be doing with at least some important areas of your life. In the solar zodiac you would find Ardra as the bright star Betelgeuse in Orion, which is also within the front section of Gemini. Since Mercury owns Gemini he contributes his energies to the foundation of this mansion. The combination of revolutionary Rahu with intellectual Mercury causes this mansion to be the home of powerful new thoughts and ideas, which may be troubling at first, or difficult to fully comprehend. In conclusion, the best way to understand the mansion of Ardra is to think of it as a composting place for making fertilizer. Here the tears of deep and turbulent emotions mix with the dead organic matter of things that we have to lay to rest. The combination of the two creates great fertilizer, and out of that fertilizer grows a revolutionary new understanding of life.

Lunar Mansion of your Moon

The Lunar Zodiac of 27 mansions is always useful and important, but comes to the peak of it's relevance when we talk about the Moon. So let's now look at the lunar mansion occupied by the Moon when you were born.

The Protector - Jyeshtha

A mystical talisman - a source of divine, spiritual and occult protection - symbolizes this lunar mansion. The word itself, jyeshtha, means "the elder" signifying a wizened person whose arcane, shamanic, and supernatural guidance protects the masses. Indra, the king of heaven, is the god of this mansion - illustrating that invincibility, authority, and bravery can be acquired from the supernatural protection of Jyeshtha. Mercury is the planet owning this mansion, which exists within Scorpio - the home of Mars. Thus, although Jyeshtha holds profound access to sub- and supraconscious intuitions, she is challenged by weakness towards the normal rational processes of intellect and communication, which become clouded and confused by passions and lack of direct simplicity.

Core Yogas 1

Virinchi Yoga Jupiter, the 5th lord and Saturn in angles or trines and in own, friendly or exaltation rasis. "One will be fully absorbed in the knowledge of Brahma. One is highly intelligent and will consider the Vedas to hold a predominant position over other sacred writings. Endowed with all the good qualities, one will always be happy at heart. He will not swerve in any way from the course of conduct prescribed in the Vedas, and will have a good number of distinguished disciples. He will be gentle in his speech, will posses much wealth, wife and sons. Long-lived, one will have his senses under control, shine with spiritual lustre, and will be saluted by kings." Virinchi is a name of Brahma, the Creator. This yoga indicates a devotee of Brahma. Amongst all the yogas being given named after Brahma, this one is one the most significant. Saturn indicates Brahma, Jupiter indicates his consort Gayatri, the mother of the Vedas. The 5th lord is involved as it represents the creative nature. When this yoga is present it indicates spiritual tendencies and natives with this yoga are usually responsible for initiating or creating something of importance. Sarasvati Yoga Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus in an angle, trine, or 2nd house, and Jupiter in own, exaltation, or friendly rasi. "One is highly intelligent, skilled in dramaturgy, prose, poetry, composition, versifying accounts and in the exposition of sacred texts. With fame spreading over the three worlds, one is exceedingly wealthy, fortunate, having wife and children, and commanding respect from the best of kings." Sarasvati is the Goddess of eloquence and learning. Mercury, Jupiter and Venus can be in the specified houses in any combination, either jointly or singly. Chamara "yak tail" Yoga Two benefics in the lagna, 9th, 10th, or 7th. "One will be either a philosopher, wise, eloquent and held in high esteem by kings, or a king, who being competent by birth to enter the study of the sacred scriptures, has mastered everything connected therewith. This personage will live a year after the tale of 70 years is completed (be long-lived)." Chamara is the tail of a yak as an insignia of royalty. Two benefics in the lagna, 9th, 10th or 7th motivates the native towards good deeds and gives philosophical tendencies. In some cases, however, two benefics in the 7th or 10th can afflict one's marital life. Jupiter and Venus in the 7th indicate a native who is sexually overactive. Venus and Mercury in the 7th or 10th indicates a native who is sexually a rake, and when in the 7th additionally denies marriage or destroys the spouse, though a benefic aspecting these two can give marriage later in life. Gaja Kesari "elephant lion" Yoga 1. Jupiter in an angle from the Moon, and joined or aspected by a benefic, avoiding at the same time debilitation, inimical rasi, or combustion. 2. Jupiter in an angle from the Moon. "One will be splendorous, wealthy, long-lived, energetic, renowned, intelligent, endowed with many laudable virtues, pleasing the king, and having great money and grains. One will destroy, like a lion, all his enemies and conquer everything by his own valor." This is a well-known yoga that indicates intelligence, a happy attitude, and protection from adversity. It is particularly noted for wealth, and the houses involved will indicate sources of wealth. The first version, requiring Jupiter to be under benefic influence and not in a bad dignity or combust, is much more significant and effective. In this case it is Jupiter that is the significant planet in the yoga and the planet that will give the greater rise, success and wealth. The version that is formed simply by Jupiter's placement on an angle from the Moon is very common, occurring in one out of three horoscopes and is not very significant by itself, though if Jupiter and/or the Moon are involved in other yogas their formation of this simple Gaja Kesari Yoga will be a contributing factor for success and wealth. Kahala "large drum" Yoga

Core Yogas 2

The lords of the 4th and the 9th in angles to each other, and the lagna lord strong. "One will be learned, of high moral training, energetic, adventurous, handsome, charming, wellbalanced, obedient, having the best pleasures of life, lording over a few villages, and endowed with a complete army consisting of chariots, elephants, horses, and infantry." This good placement of the 4th lord in reference to the 9th lord in the first version of this yoga indicates a happy native who feels that their life has purpose and who is, therefore, energetic and inspired. Chandra "Moon" Yoga The 10th lord in an angle, trine, or 2nd from the Moon. "One becomes a king having special kinds of gems, diamonds and jewels." This common yoga indicates the importance of the relationship between one's mind and one's karmas. The 10th lord in an angle, trine, or in the 2nd from the Moon indicates harmony between one's mind and karmas. The native's actions will correspond with their mentality and they will be more comfortable with their works. On the other hand, the 10th lord not in these places indicates a lack of harmony, or conflict in the case of the 10th lord being in the 6th or 8th from the Moon, between one's mind and karmas. In this case the natives actions don't necessarily correspond to their mentality, and they don't feel as comfortable with their works. This yoga, by itself, is not a very powerful success producer but it does exert an important influence upon the native's relationship to not only their career, but to all the deeds they are required to perform. Budha Aditya "Mercury/Sun" Yoga Mercury conjunct the Sun. "One is highly intelligent, skillful, of good reputation, personal respect and surrounded by comforts and happiness." This is a simple and common yet important yoga. The house that the Sun and Mercury both fall in will be an area where the native will make progress through their skill, intelligence, productivity, and practicality. If Mercury is combust this yoga will still indicate skill, intelligence, etc., however, the results of a combust planet's avastha, Kopa- angry, will cause frustration to the house these planets fall in as well as to the houses that Mercury rules, so the happiness will be marred. Kapata "deceit" Yoga The 4th lord with Saturn, Rahu, or Mandi, and aspected (with planetary aspect) by a malefic. "One will be a hypocrite." Natives with Kapata Yoga are not all that they appear to be. The 4th house is a hidden house and malefics influences to it indicate negative thoughts, emotions, feelings and actions that at first may be difficult to discern, but that with time are discovered. Oftentimes these natives hide things from themselves first, and, as a consequence, secondarily to others, particularly female natives with this yoga. If this yoga is very severe it can indicate a native who is very disturbed and who as a result commits atrocities, while the average case of this yoga simply hides minor actions that would cause embarrassment, are not socially acceptable, or that are simply not considered good conduct. The Sun is a very weak malefic for this yoga, since the Sun is a noble planet. Rahu and Saturn indicate the worst type of deceit and negative thinking, while Mars and Ketu are middling in their deceit, though they can indicate hidden violent tendencies. This is a yoga that requires careful scrutiny as it can indicate a wide range of hidden negative actions. This version of Kapata Yoga , which does not include a malefic in the 4th house but only the affliction of the 4th lord, is not as severe as the other two versions that require a malefic to be in the 4th house. Reka "low caste" Yogas The 9th lord combust and the lagna and 2nd lords debilitated. "One born under Reka Yoga has neither knowledge nor wealth, and is penurious, hostile, lustful and wrathful. One's mind is always distressed, and one is disagreeable, having no beauty or grace. Crafty, filthy, and quarrelsome, one lives on alms. Full of envy and rage, one reviles gods and Brahmans and is berated daily by his wife, sons, and entire family. Evil-minded, one will be

given to bad ways, be ill off, and intent on injuring and abusing their relatives. One will have ugly or diseased nails, be short-lived, and beg all around. One may also be a mute, cripple, blind, deaf or insane. One's thoughts may be betrayed by the change in their eyes." Reka means low in the sense of negative or minus. This yoga, therefore, gives negativities and take away the desired in life. Often these yogas indicate a native who does not succeed in something important that they hope to do, or upon doing so they do not receive the expected happiness.

DASA INDEPENDENT FOUNDATION YOGAS

Malavya Yoga Venus in an angle, and in its own or exaltation rasi. Description"The Malavya native is lustrous like Chandra, of slender waist, medium stature, with beautiful lips the lower being not very fleshy, and having an ordinary red complexion, with white, even, and beautiful teeth, and a pleasant fragrance to the body. Handsome and gracefully built, one has the gestures, bodily structure and the shining eyes of a woman. The limbs are strong and the arms are long enough to reach to the knees. One has a majestic voice akin to that of a tusker, and is richly dressed and well ornamented. The face is 13 anguls in length and ten in breadth, and the temperament is kapha and vata." Personality"One is fond of music, silver, jewels, women, furniture, clothes and garments; and enjoys all the pleasures of life to suit their passion. Liberal, meritorious, resolute, powerful, wealthy, and fortunate, one becomes famous and prospers. One is blessed with children, spouse, and vehicles, and eats good meals. One possesses unperturbed senses and becomes a monarch of cultured mind." Religion and Knowledge"Learned, one knows the meaning of the sacred scriptures, and is clever in the application of the three regal powersstrength, capacity and counsel." Life and Death"One lives happily for seventy (or 77) years as ruler of Lata, Sindhu and Malva and then leaves for his heavenly abode after shuffling off his mortal coils in a sacred place through yoga or penance." "Malavya" means relating to or belonging to the country Malava (Malva), in central India. Why this yoga is named thus is a good question, however it appears that Malava was a center of artistry and luxury, much like Athens of ancient Greece. Natives with Malavya Yoga have the greatest capacity for enjoyment. The wise and diplomatic qualities of Venus are very accentuated in natives with this yoga. Their strength comes from recognizing the true value of anything they might desire or aspire towards, thereby making the best decisions and, therefore, not involving themselves in any activity that costs them more than they can afford; whether the price is material, emotional or spiritual. These natives also have the greatest ability to harmoniously enjoy the good things in the world without lusting or craving after them. Vosi Yoga A planet, not including the Moon, Rahu or Ketu, in the 12th from the Sun. "One born with Vosi Yoga will be skillful, charitable, of excellent speech, looking towards the sides, employed, equal to a king, and genuine. He is endowed with fame, learning, strength, and a good memory. He will have a strong physique around the waist. Malefics forming this yoga will give contrary effects." Planets forming Vosi Yoga rise before the Sun; therefore, these planets are those with which the native initiates the experiences in their life. These are potentially the most activating and initializing planets in the horoscope. The traits of these planets will be very noticeable in the native upon first impression. Generally benefics forming Vosi Yoga are favored. Classical texts give very different results to benefics vs. malefics forming Vosi Yoga: "One born in a Suvosi Yoga (Vosi Yoga formed by benefics) will be liberal, blessed with all kinds of comforts, wealth, and happiness, a favorite of the sovereign, liked by all, exceedingly

prosperous, and famous."

Core Yogas 4

Benefics forming Vosi Yoga indicate that the native initiates their life in a well to do fashion, which includes kindness, fairness, balance, etc. The first impression of the native will be a good one in accordance with the nature of the benefic. Benefics forming Vosi Yoga, which are debilitated in the rasi or the navamsa, will, however, indicate problematic and imbalanced character qualities in accordance with the nature of the benefic, which reduce the native's capacity to initiate the things they want in their lives. Any other yogas these debilitated planets are taking part in will, however, still become more powerful due to their taking part in the Solar Yoga. Jupiter"The native will possess courage, strength and wisdom. He will keep his word." Jupiter forming Vosi Yoga by being in the 12th from the Sun indicates that the native approaches things with wisdom, faith and understanding. Tolerance, thoughtfulness, openness, faith and goodwill are noticeable upon first impression. Kemadruma Yoga If Anapha, Sunapha or Durudhara Yogas are not present, Kemadruma Yoga is formed. "One born in Kemadruma Yoga, though born in a princely race, becomes obscure, inimically disposed, miserable, reproached; and bereft of intelligence and learning. Given to base ways and wickedly inclined, one falls from his religion. One is reduced to penury and perils, drudging as a menial and wandering, as well as being deprived of livelihood, wife, children, residence, robes, friends, food and drink. The native will suffer extreme difficulties, sickness and filthiness." Kemadruma Yogas are amongst the worse yogas that ruin a horoscope, making it difficult for the native to actualize anything of benefit in their lives. Amongst Kemadruma Yogas this one is perhaps the worst and one of the two of greatest importance. The Moon is a very fickle and unsteady planet that rules the mind. It is important that a planet besides the Sun, Rahu or Ketu is in the 2nd or 12th from the Moon in order to lend some firmness, stability and direction to the mind, which is necessary in order for the native to succeed with any vision that they may have. Failing this, the mind remains unanchored and becomes a source of trouble. Fortunately there are several factors that cancel this terrible form of Kemadruma Yoga, which are being given in order of significance: A planet, other than the Sun, Rahu or Ketu in an angle (including the 1st) from the Moon. This is the most significant Kemadruma Yoga cancellation. The planet on an angle from the Moon serves to stabilize and focus the mind. A planet in the 4th or 10th from the Moon does this particularly and is the next best thing to having a planet in the 2nd or 12th. In fact similar effects as Anapha, Sunapha and Durudhara Yogas are said to occur if the 4th and 10th houses from the Moon are occupied by any of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn, and some astrologers actually consider these yogas to be formed by planets in the 4th and 10th from the Moon, though they are not considered authoritative. These planets in the 4th and 10th house from the Moon will influence the native less than when in the 2nd and 12th from the Moon, but if there are none of these planets in the 2nd or 12th from the Moon, then any of these planets in the 4th or 10th become very significant and important. In all cases when there is Kemadruma Yoga and its cancellation, it is not as beneficial as having one of Anapha, Sunapha or Durudhara Yoga. When one of these yogas is present the native maintains poise and equilibrium when confronted by new experiences, the Lunar Yoga forming planets in the 2nd and 12th from the Moon ground and stabilize the native. When there are no planets in the 2nd and 12th from the Moon the native has nothing solid to react upon when confronted by new experiences and it takes them a moment to get centered. In this case, if the resulting Kemadruma Yoga is cancelled, the planets canceling the Kemadruma Yoga are what the native relies upon in order to catch their balance. The norm and average is for Anapha, Sunapha or Durudhara Yoga not to be present, but for the resulting Kemadruma Yoga to be cancelled. When Anapha, Sunapha or Durudhara Yogas are found, consider them to be a benefit to the horoscope. A planet, other than the Sun, Rahu or Ketu, in the 2nd or 12th rasi from the rasi of the Moon's navamsa.

As an example, if the Moon is in the navamsa of Aries, one of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in Pisces or Taurus in the Rasi would cancel Kemadruma Yoga. Some sources actually consider the planets in the 2nd and 12th rasi from the Moon's navamsa to form Anapha, Sunapha and Durudhara Yogas. These planets will, however, give somewhat lesser Lunar Yoga effects than planets that are actually placed in the 2nd and 12th from the Moon. Any planet, other than Rahu or Ketu, on an angle from the lagna. Any planet on an angle serves to focus and direct the native; therefore, these planets can avert the troublesome effects of Kemadruma Yoga. Mentally, however, the native will be somewhat fickle and unfocused. Uttama "best" Yoga The Moon in an apoklima (3rd, 6th, 9th or 12th house) from the Sun. The native's wealth, intelligence, knowledge, and skill shall be great. These are important yogas that must be used correctly or else they will be misleading. A casual observation of only a few horoscopes will reveal that there are wealthy, intelligent, and knowledgeable personages with the Moon in an angle from the Sun, and those of lesser abilities and wealth born with the Moon in an apoklima from the Sun. These yogas obviously, therefore, do not impose a restriction upon the native's wealth or intelligence. The Moon gives growth of all things and the light of the Moon is dependent upon the Sun, therefore, the growth and realization of any productive yoga, whether one that grants success, wealth, marriage, children, or anything else, is dependent upon the Moon's placement from the Sun, which indicates the level of preparedness with which the native meets the fructification of a productive yoga. These three yogas are not meant to indicate the full measure of the native's wealth, intelligence and skill, but only to indicate the measure of wealth, intelligence and skill the native has upon the initiation of a productive yoga with which to bring the results of the yoga to fruition. When Uttama Yoga (best yoga) is present the Moon is in an apoklima from the Sun. Apoklimas represent the reaction that is the result of having been receptive to an activity. Therefore, in horoscopes with the Moon in an apoklima from the Sun, the native is very well prepared, totally ready to react to the opportunities that the initiation of a good yoga. brings. They have the full education, skillfulness and resourcefulness required to smoothly bring the effects of the yoga to realization. The lord of the navamsa of an exalted planet is in an angle or trine, and an occupant of the angle or trine is strong in own or exaltation rasi, while the lagna lord is strong. "One is noble born, of mien and fame such as it is the good fortune of sovereigns to have." In this yoga a planet must be well placed by being in exaltation, and the navamsa lord of that planet must be very well placed in the rasi by being in an angle or trine and with a planet in its own or exaltation rasi. The benefits of the yoga come from the indications of the exalted planet in question as well as the house its navamsa lord falls in. The lagna lord must also be well placed and strong so that the native can successfully activate the yoga and benefit from its results. Kalpadruma "tree of plenty" Yoga The lagna lord, its dispositor, the dispositor of that, and the navamsa lord of the last must be in an angle, trine, own rasi or exaltation rasi. "One will be a pious, strong, and merciful king endowed with all kinds of wealth, and fond of war." This yoga further illustrates the concept of dispositors, including the navamsa dispositor. The more times a dispositor of a dispositor is well placed, the more auspicious the original planet in question becomes. Kalpadruma yoga, like Parijatha Yoga, helps the native to fulfill every desire. Parijatha "celestial coral tree" Yoga The dispositor of the lord of the lagna lord, and the navamsa lord of that dispositor, must be in an angle, trine, own rasi or exaltation rasi. "One will be a sovereign attentive to their duty and engagements, of compassionate disposition, destined to be happy in the middle and latter portion of life, respected and obeyed by other kings, fond of war, and possessing elephants and horses." The Parijatha is a celestial tree that has the power to grant wishes. This yoga, therefore, helps the native to fulfill every desire. This yoga emphasizes the importance of the navamsa dispositor of a planet, which is just as important as its rasi dispositor.
