The Effectiveness of Numbered Heads Together (NHT) in Teaching Reading Viewed From Students Learning Motivation (an experimental study to the eight grade students in SMPN 1 Tulung in the 2009/2010 academic year) Thesis. English Education Departement, Graduate School, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. The research is aimed at finding out: (1) the difference between Numbered Heads Together (NHT) strategy and expository strategy for teaching reading, (2) the difference between students who have high and low motivation in reading ability, and (3) the interaction between teaching strategies and motivation in teaching reading. Related to the aims of the research, an experimental method is carried out in SMP N 1 Tulung Klaten. The population was all of the eight graders of SMP N 1 Tulung Klaten in 2009/2010 academic year which consists of six classes. Two out of six classes consisting of 40 students from each were taken as the sample by applying cluster random sampling. They are Class VIII E as the experimental group and Class VIII F as the control group. The experimental group is taught reading using NHT strategy, while the control group is taught using expository strategy. The instruments for collecting the data were a questionnaire on reading motivation and a reading test. Before the instruments were utilized, a tryout had been administered to know the validity and reliability of the instruments. Pearson Product Moment formula was used to calculate the validity of items while Cronbach Alpha formula was used to measure the reliability of items on the instruments. Based on the two formula, it was found that all of 44 items in the reading motivation questionnaire were valid on a critical value (N = 40) of .312 and the coefficient of the questionnaire reliability met the criterion, i.e. .917 > .312 or r obtained > r table meaning that the questionnaire of reading motivation was reliable. 45 items of reading test were also valid. Then, it was found out that the data were in normal distribution and homogeneous based on the normality testing and homogeneity testing. The writer analyzed the reading test scores of students who had high and low reading motivation in the experimental and control groups. Multifactor Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Tuckey test were applied with significance = 0.05. Based on the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that: (1) NHT is more effective than expository strategy in the teaching of reading; (2) the students who have high learning motivation have higher reading ability than those who have low one; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching strategies and motivation for the teaching of reading. Therefore it is recommended that: (1) teachers apply NHT in teaching reading; (2) to promote students learning motivation, it is important to give students chance to develop their own ideas and share the ideas in groups; and (3) future researchers may conduct the same kind research with different sample and condition.

ABSTRAK Lisa Rakhmanina, NIM: S890908212. 2010. The Effectiveness of Numbered Heads Together (NHT) in Teaching Reading Viewed From Students Learning Motivation (an experimental study to the eight grade students in SMPN 1 Tulung in the 2009/2010 academic year) Tesis. Program Studi Penddikan Bahasa Inggris, Pascasarjana, Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta.
