Coastal Department Stores, Inc. Buys Out The Putnam Company NEW YORK. Sept. 14, 2011- Coastal Department Stores, Inc. announced today its plan to acquire The Putnam Company in an effort to expand. The terms dictate that Coastal will pay about $10 billion, assume $2 billion of Putnams debt, and take the name of Putnams Jordans stores. Coastals four regional department store chains mainly operate in the Midwest and East. Putnams Jordans stores are in major cities, along with 20 recently opened stores in the South and West. The acquisition combines two of the most recognized and popular retailers in the industry, complementing Coastal stores by expanding into new regions. Were ready to move forward and increase our reach, both geographically and consumer wise, says Coastal chief executive officer, Colin Davies. This is a major move on our part, but were ready to go forward. Most of Putnams $2 billion debt came from a failure to meet expectations in the new stores. Coastal is using that to refresh its image, and renew its consumer base. Although some speculate that we could lose customers after switching to Jordans due to our strong brand loyalty, we have great ideas to restore the Jordans name and boost the new image as the best of both worlds, says Davies. The quality of service and care will be preserved. There will be several changes to the store, but mostly to help ease the consumers. Customers and research have shown a desire for a larger selection of clothing and cosmetics. Jordans stores will start carrying more womens clothing, accessories, mens clothing, and designer brands. Jordans will have a new more upscale look. The stores will be redesigned as well to lure in the fashion savvy. These changes will be implemented within the following year and can be monitored through Coastals website at coastaldepartments.com About Coastal Department Stores, Inc. is a leading national retailer throughout the country, specializing in housewares and children clothing. The Putnam Company owns and operates one of the best known and oldest department store chains, Jordans. ###
