SCHOOLS 2010 ENGLISH MONTH CAMPAIGN PROGRAMME REPORT By NURHAFIZAH BINTI AJLAN

Othman Bin Md Ali, Headmaster, Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Senta, 35500 Bidor, Perak. 21 April 2011 Dear Sir, As you requested, the following is the progress report on the schools English Month Campaign programme held previously. The report was made purposely to highlight two main events particularly which were held to enhance the usage of English Language among the pupils in this school and to increase their interest towards English Language. Abstract The school had successfully carried out the schools English Month Campaign on the April 4th 2010. A few significant events were also held in conjunction to the particular campaign. The events were intentionally held to encourage the pupils the needs of increasing their competency in the English Language. As one of the main subject for the UPSR examination, English is always seen as one of the cause of pupils failure in obtaining straight As in the test. As the school had achieved a deprived achievement in the 2010 UPSR, the school administrators and the English Panel feel that some changes should be planned and acted out to foster pupils interest towards the language and at the same time perform well in their

exams. These are the reasons why the programmes were held. The main focuses are to increase their competency and at the same time for the need of UPSR.

Introduction The English Panel Committee of two main events previously Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Senta had proposed

in conjunction with our 2010 English Month Campaign. The

events were, Spell It Right Challenge for Phase I and II pupils and Story Telling Competition which was for Phase 1 pupils ( Year 1, 2 and 3 ). The events were successfully carried out by the English Panel Committee Members and the participation was tremendous. As requested, the following is the progress report on the 2010 English Month Campaign and the focus was specifically towards the two main events mentioned earlier. Summary The school had successfully carried out the schools 2010 English Month Campaign on April 4th May 2010 . A few significant events were also held in conjunction to the particular campaign. The events were planned and prepared purposely to encourage the pupils to enlarge their needs of boosting their competency in the usage of English Language in their daily life especially at school. Previously, the English Panel Committee of Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Senta has

carried out a special meeting on 24th February 2010 as requested by the headmaster. The request was made as the prior UPSR examination results has shown a dramatically poor English performance which resulted in a lesser amount of pupils obtaining straight As in the test. Prior to the request, the English Panel has taken the situation seriously and this is the reason why the programmes were held. It also one of the best way to help the school increase the percentage of As in English Language in the UPSR examination. As a result of the English Panel Meeting, a resolution has been made by all the English teachers that the school should organize an extensive and effective English Month or Campaign in the month of May and two major events were proposed as below:

a. Spell it Right Challenge b. Story Telling Competition A special organizing committee has also been formed to visualize the events dated above. The paperwork has been sent to the headmaster to visualize the details of the intended and extensive programmes. The District Education Officer has also been informed about the campaign. The school was also glad with the acceptance of the Batang Padang District Education Officer, En. Mohd Bashah to support the programmes and he had also officiated the opening ceremony to the English Month Campaign 2010. Discussion / Problem Statement As we know, English is one of the major subject for the UPSR examination. At the moment, the school has scored only 69.9% overall achievement in the 2010 UPSR and English has only contributed 71.1% towards the overall schools result. Out of 15 pupils who took the test, only 8 pupils scored A in English which has contributed 53.3% of As, 4 out of the 15 pupils got B which has contributed 26.7% and the rest of 3 pupils got C which has contributed 20% in the exam. And, generally, 8 pupils scored 5As `in the test. The headmaster has urged the Schools English Panel Committee to strengthen the pupils English achievement by listing out more drastic changes. He has also recommended that more extensive and effective English Programmes should be held to improve pupils competency in the language. He feels that better achievement in English will be resulting in getting more pupils scoring 5As in the oncoming 2011 UPSR. Apart from that, the school attempts to achieve 80 % of English passes with As in the UPSR for the coming years reduce the number of pupils who are unable to master the three main skills in language learning (speaking, reading and writing) by the end of the 6 years primary schooling in the school. Pupils need to master the three basic skills before entering the secondary school for the next years. The panel feels that English can be quite difficult to master especially for learners who are not a native speakers and not using the language as their mother tongue. And furthermore, the pupils come from the race of Orang Asli who do not use English at all as their language. According to our research and observation, English Language is not the

second language anymore but it becomes their third language . So, some extreme and extensive resolutions should be made to tackle and handle those kind of obstacles in order to increase the percentage of pupils getting As in English. However, pupils are expected to have certain knowledge in English language so as to be able to continue their studies and communicate easily in their personal and examination purposes. One of the most obvious reasons that produce pupils weaknesses in English is their lack of will and awareness. They often think that there is no point in learning another language, so that, they do not put any effort on it. Some of them may give some attention but they give up eventually because of the hard work and practices that it demands. There are also indolent pupils who just prepare to pass the exam. Therefore, they rarely remember anything after the test. In addition, they always feel very shy to try to speak or communicate in English because they do not have enough self motivation towards learning and lack of vocabulary in English Language. The schools English Panel attempts to achieve 80 % of English passes with As in the UPSR for the coming year 2011 and also putting an effort by arising the number of pupils who are obtaining As in English for the UPSR test on this coming September. . The panel also aims that in the oncoming UPSR examination, a number of 12 out of 15 pupils will obtain A in the test. The members will be working with full commitment, equipped with specific skills and requisite knowledge base, to ensure effective teaching and learning process as well as pupils language mastery. In order to obtain pupils interest in English, the panel has proposed two main events in conjunction with the 2010 English Month Campaign. The programmes are Schools Spell It Right Competition and Story Telling Competition. The details and report on those two events are as follows:
a. Schools 2010 Spell It Right Challenge.

The challenge was held on Monday, 4th May 2010 at 8.00 a.m. at the school hall . The challenge seeks to discover individuals at primary school level who possess an outstanding command of English vocabulary. Participants were pupils from Year 1 to year 6 pupils. They were at first selected by the English teachers and compete among their classmates at preliminary round in inter-classes competition. 24 participants from Phase I and 24 pupils from Phase II took part in the event. The one day programme was successfully held and the

ceremony was officiated by Batang Padang District Education Officer En. Mohd Bashah and later on gave away the prizes to the winners. Aims and Objectives The objectives for the Schools Spell It Right Challenge 2010 are as below: i. Pupils will be good spellers ii. iii. iv. v. Pupils will enjoy spelling some English words Pupils vocabulary will be amplified to have wide range of vocabulary Pupils will become more mature and responsible leaders Pupils will be interested in the language

The programme also aims that the audience who are students from Year One to Year Six would be interested in enhancing themselves in the English Language. It aims that the pupils will be motivated as they witness the participants involving in the event. The panel feels that the activity could be implemented in classes during English periods such as having a 5minutes slot each time before starting every English lesson. Duration

The competition was held in classes ( inter-classes ) by the English teachers during English periods. The eligible pupils were then contested themselves in the finals which is held on the 4th April 2010. The event is held for only a day ( see appendix 1 ) at the school hall. Target Group

A number of 26 pupils from various Phase I and II classes took part in the challenge. They were divided into several groups. Twelve final contestants were selected to merge to the final challenge to pick up the winner.

Implementation Report

The challenge which was held on Monday, 4th April 2011 at 8.00 a.m. at the school hall was indeed a success as the participants have shown their unsurpassed effort to be the winner in this spectacular event. The hall was fully packed with phase II students who really enjoyed

the event and supported their friends who became contestants in the particular occasion. A total of RM1031 was used as the prizes, hall decorations, and contribution for the judges, promotions and souvenirs to the guest over honour. The winners for this spectacular event for Group 2 ( Phase II pupils) were Dayana a/p Senuman from Year 6 class , Nor Aliza a/p Bah Ali from Year 5 class and Abeni a/p Senuman from Year5 were placed second and third. The trio were in a three-way tie for the championship after three other finalists were eliminated. The winners for Group 1 ( Phase I pupils) were Justina a/p , Zaril a/l from Year 2 class and Bah Arol a/l from Year 2 class were placed second and third. 10 consolation prizes for each group were also awarded to the participants. They were Ajas , Suriana , Rahimah , Wak Ribau and Nabina from Year 5 class , Bah Izzat a/l Kong Chee Wai, Adila Azie and Nordiana from Year 4 class, Asapirah from Year 2 and Wak Ana from Year 1 class.

The Schools Spell It Right Challenge 2010 has its strengths and weaknesses. The members of English Panel feel that a few significant advantages were shown during and after the event was held. The event which is considerably rich in detail has caught the interest of the audience as well as the participants. The audience was stimulated by the event which has really motivated them. One of the strength of the event is that it also does not require a great deal of training. What it needs is practice. So, a very good and hard effort of drilling in spelling needed to get win. Spelling skill needs them to be more focus and practicing more on memorizing skill. Anyway, there are still some weaknesses which could be improvised if the event is going to be held in future. The event works well for observing one individual, but is difficult to use

when observing a group of pupils. We could not have a detail and individual observing for spelling skill because it was held in a big group. The event has its weaker side as only a number of pupils are able to participate in an event while the others are only observers which were hard to observe and analysed. It also depends on the memory of the participants. This is because, some of the pupils have a short-term memory and some of them are good in memorizing which have a long-term memory skill. . Suggestion and Recommendation

The English Panel Committee of Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Senta feels that the same events should be regularly held annually but in a larger scale. The event should also be implemented in English classes as set induction or part of teaching activities to foster better English mastery learning among pupils. For example, the English teachers or the teachers who are on duty on that particular week, can ask the pupils in the assembly to spell certain words and reward them by giving some mini gifts to the pupils who spell correctly. As a result, the pupils will fill highly motivated to try more activities in future.
b. Story Telling Competition

The competition was held on Thursday, 11th May 2010 at 8.00 a.m. at the school hall. The competition has also shown a fabulous success as the participants have shown their unrivalled attempt to be the winner in this spectacular event. Participants have prepared themselves well with the costumes and gadgets. They practiced by themselves everyday during recess time in front of the English Teachers so that the teachers can give some suggestions or corrections towards their pronunciation and art of performing the stories. Aims and Objectives The objectives for the Story Telling Competition 2010 are as below: i. Pupils will be good story tellers ii. Pupils will foster their listening skills iii. Pupils vocabulary will be improved

iv. Developing pupils speaking skills v. Pupils will be interested in the language vi. Built their self confidence and motivation to speak in public by using English as their medium of communication. The programme also aims that the audience who are from Phase II pupils from Year Four to year Six would be interested in enhancing themselves in speaking skill which would contribute to improve their competency in the usage of English Language. It also aims that the pupils will be motivated as they witness the participants contesting in the event. The panel feels that the activity could be implemented in classes during English periods and selected pupils will be presenting their stories during the weekly assembly. This kind of activity can be done weekly or monthly as a booster for them to use English everyday. Duration The event is also held for only a day ( see appendix 2 ) as the final is contested by chosen participants selected by the English teachers.

Target Group The event is targeted for Phase II pupils. A number of 26 pupils from various classes

from Phase II classes took part in the challenge. This group is targeted to enroll in the events as their mastery in English is quite superior compared to the Phase I pupils. And, in addition, phase II pupils are more confident and mature enough to be in front of the audience. Implementation Report The event which was witnessed by the whole pupils and teachers in the school was really a great achievement done by the organising committee. The participation was tremendous as the contestants had shown their great effort in enlightening their convincing stories and the costumes were prepared stylishly, attractive and accurate to the stories. The committee would like to highlight their thankfulness to the parents as well as the teachers for their total support which has lead to the success of the event. A total of RM1500 was used as the prizes, hall decorations, gadgets, contribution for the judges, promotions and souvenirs.

The guests and contestants were also given a treat at the end of the events. A sum of RM2531.00 ( Ringgit : Two thousand and thirty one ) was spent for the feast and souvenirs . The winners for this terrific events were Justina from Year 3 class . Clad in a costume made out of artificial leaves, flowers and cherries, she mesmerized the judges and audience relating a tale of One Tree' at the Story Telling Competition. Zuzinila from Year 3 class and Bah Kimi from Year 3 too were placed second and third. The trios have shown their great performance in the championship by telling interesting stories and full of moral values and many attractive techniques of reciting the stories compared to 7 other contestants. And, their fluency in reading and speaking made them eligible and qualified to be the top three winners among of them. 7 consolation prizes were also awarded to the participants.

Strengths and Weaknesses

The Schools Story Telling Competition 2010 also has its strengths and weaknesses. The panel members feel that it has shown some advantages during and after the event was held. The event has caught the interest of the audience as well as the participant with the attractively enlighten stories, colourful props, pleasant music and stunning costumes and the use of interesting tone of voice made the audience proud and enjoyed the stories. The audience intend to spell the words pronounced by the judges in the event.. The event has really motivated them. The event also does not require a great deal of training but practice of reciting the stories everday. This is one of the way to let them interested towards reading especially English Story Books. Nevertheless, there are still some weaknesses which could be improvised if the event is going to be held in future. The event works well only for individuals who are participating in the event while the audience are just done with listening activity. The audience are not involved meaningfully in the event to foster their learning in the target language. The weakest part is that observation has proved that not all pupils are able to understand the story. The event was indeed time consuming as participants need time to practice and prepare for the costumes and props. Extensive drilling and practices can make the pupils to be mor wellprepared and enhancing their self confidents too.

Suggestion and Recommendation

The English Panel Committee of Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Senta feels that the same events should be regularly held annually but in a larger scale. The event should also be implemented in English classes as set induction or part of teaching activities to foster better English mastery among pupils or it can be done fortnight or monthly just to let them more familiar with English stories. The English Panel Committee of Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Senta also would like to list out all the expenses used to put together the two main events. The expenses for those two events were collected from various sources. We were thankful to the donators and contributors which had given us enough sums to spend over the expenses needed to employ

the events. The donation was spent meaningfully in various activities in conjunction with the events. Conclusion The events and related activities were successfully held and caught the interest of the pupils. The events has indeed benefited the pupils in improving their speaking, listening and improve their mastery in English especially their vocabulary. This kind of activity really needs a great effort and focus from the pupils, teachers and their parents too. The Committee of English Panel does need to attend to any suggestions from the headmaster or any individuals who could help to prevail the pupils achievement in English.
