Ownership and Operation Costs 8 Fuel Consumption

measured over a short period of operation will

OPERATING COSTS give a higher consumption than shown here
8-13
(Lines 8 to 13) because: (1) the study considers 100%
efficiency, without downtime or interruptions
(2) the operators know they are being
8 FUEL CONSUMPTION monitored two. On the other hand, these tables
allow for normal inefficiencies in work cycles
(Line 8) to get closer to the classic operation of a
normal day.
Fuel consumption can be measured quite
accurately on the construction site. However,
if there is no opportunity to do so, it can be
estimated knowing the use that will be given to
the machine.
The type of work determines the engine load
factor and this in turn influences fuel
consumption. A motor running continuously at
full power operates at a load factor of 1.0.
Earthmoving machines only intermittently reach
a load factor of 1.0 and very rarely maintain
it for any considerable length of time. Periods
of idle speed running, blade pushing, pusher
reverse travel, moving empty machines, precise
part throttle maneuvers and downhill work are
examples of operations that reduce the load
factor.
The tables below give estimates of fuel
consumption per hour at various load factors
for machines manufactured by Caterpillar.
Because the uti lization of these types of
machine may vary, application guides are also
included to estimate the fac loading tor.

To estimate the cost per hour of fuel,

select tion the load factor based on the
application and find the consumption per hour.
Then use the following formula:
Consumption per hour ^ Local Unit Fuel Price
= Fuel Cost per Hour.
When using these tables, take into
consideration the differences variable inks
that may affect energy consumption fuel. Two
different operators with different attitudes or
temperaments handling identical machines ticas,
side by side in the same material can have a
difference of 10 to 12% in fuel consumption.
However, the figures given are averages
applicable to a wide variety of conditions.
Your Caterpillar dealer representative can help
you select the right mation most reasonable for
your specific situation; We suggest that you
consult it.

Description of typical applications
(regarding job application)
Low Light public works and stacking work. Compactor trailer. Push loose fill with blade. Considerable degree of no-load or
shock-free running.
Medium Work with the blade and pushing scrapers when loading clay, sand, silt, loose gravel. Clearance around the
mechanical shovel. Normal compaction.
High Strong work in pushing rocks with the blade. Pushing scrapers in stony and rocky areas. Compaction work in
landfills. High impact conditions.

Soil Compactors/Landfill Compactors
Description of typical applications
(regarding job application)
Low Do not use leaf or light spreading on a flat surface or downhill. The machine has push support equipment and waste
compactor, while the compactor simply runs over smooth surfaces multiple times.
Medium The compactor primarily uses your already compacted spreading material. The compactor assists in pushing and
spreading during peak periods of the day and probably on steep working slopes. tion less than 4:1.
High The compactor is possibly the only machine for the operation. The machine will push and spread the material alone
and then compact it with multiple passes working on steep slopes, and probably uphill.

Description of typical applications
(regarding job application)
Low Light on-site, industrial or construction work. Moving light loads with bucket or pallet forks. No continuous work,
considerable idle time. The machine could be working 2 hours or less per day on average.
Medium Intermittent loading of aggregates into trucks, single-stack hopper loading and firm loading, firm and soft surfaces
for short distances with minimal slopes. Free flow, low density materials. Light public works, industrial and
construction applications. Light snow removal.
High Continuous truck loading from stack and hopper loading. Bench loading or loading and transporting on normal

(regarding job application)
Low Intermittent loading of aggregates into trucks, single-stack hopper loading and firm loading, firm and soft surfaces for
short distances with minimal slopes. Free flow, low density materials. Light public works, industrial and
construction applications. Light snow removal. Mainly wood applications where there is a high degree of no-load
operation.
Medium Continuous truck loading from stack and hopper loading. Bench loading or loading and transporting on normal
surfaces with low to medium rolling resistance and slightly adverse slopes. Low to medium density materials in
appropriately sized bucket. Assumes normal travel distances associated with high productivity stack loading
applications.
High Loading blast rock (large loaders) from the bank face. Constant loading of very common banks pacts. Continuous
work on very soft surfaces with high rolling resistance. Loading and transporting hard excavation material with
longer travel distances on poor surfaces with adverse slopes. Handling of high-density materials with a
