1.0 INTRODUCTION
A computer system comprises of hardware and software. Hardware is the physical Medium piece of computer such as floppy and disk. Software is the physical medium such as. The role of software include computer programs, procedure and documentation. Open source doesn't just mean access to the source code. Open source software is computer software that is available in source code form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, and improve the software. The source code of some software is opened in the public. Open source is becoming popular as compared to proprietary software as because open source software is easier to discover security vuinerabilities because the source code is openly available. While, proprietary software is no way to know that security vulnerabilities or bugs may exist because the source is closed

2.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE OS

Meaning of open source OS

An operating system (OS) is the software on a computer that manages the way different programs use its hardware, and regulates the ways that a user controls the computer. Operating Systems is also a field of study within Applied Computer Science. Operating systems are found on almost any device that contains a computer with multiple programsfrom cellular phones and video game consoles to supercomputers and web servers. Some popular modern operating systems for personal computers include Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The functions of operating system are processor management, that is, assignment of processor to different tasks being performed by the computer system. Besides that, memory management, that is, allocation of main memory and other storage areas to the system programmes as well as user programmes and data is one of the function of operating system. Another is file management, that is, the storage of file of various storage devices to another. It also allows all files to be easily changed and modified through the use of text editors or some other files manipulation routines. Open-source means that you can get the source code of the software for free (source code is the code of the program written in a certain programing language). Operating system is the software that you use to operate your PC (like Windows or Linux)

Example of open source OS Linux

Linux can be installed on a wide variety of computer hardware, ranging from mobile phones, tablet computers and video game consoles, to mainframes and supercomputers. Linux is predominantly known for its use in servers; as of 2009 it has a server market share ranging between 2040%. Most desktop computers run either Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X, with Linux having anywhere from a low of an estimated 12% of the desktop market, up to a possible 5-7%, or more, of the desktop market, depending on the source of the statistics. However, desktop use of Linux has become increasingly popular in recent years, partly owing to the popular Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, and openSUSE distributions and the emergence of netbooks and smart phones running an embedded Linux. The latest release: 2.6.34 / May 16, 201

Freespire (find a newer OS)

Freespire is a community-driven GNU/Linux distribution which is composed mostly of free/open source software, while providing users the choice of including proprietary software including multimedia codecs, device drivers and application software. The latest release: 2.0.8 / November 30, 2007

3.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE

Meaning of open source application software (too long)

Application software, also known as applications, is computer software designed to help the user to perform singular or multiple related specific tasks. Examples include Enterprise software, Accounting software, Office suites, Graphics software and media players. Application software is contrasted with system software and middleware, which manage and integrate a computer's capabilities, but typically do not directly apply them in the performance of tasks that benefit the user. A simple, if imperfect analogy in the world of hardware would be the relationship of an electric light bulb (an application) to an electric power generation plant (a system). The power plant merely generates electricity, not itself of any real use until harnessed to an application like the electric light that performs a service that benefits the user. Besides that, an open source application software is something for which the source code is available for download and anybody can modify it and release subsequent versions of the same provided they mention the version of the source using which they modified.

Example of open source application software

Open office

OpenOffice.org, commonly known as OOo or OpenOffice, is an open-source software application suite available for a number of different computer operating systems. The latest release - 3.2.1 / June 4, 2010 VLC media player

VLC media player is an open source, free software media player and multimedia framework written by the VideoLAN project. The latest release - 1.1.0 / June 22, 2010

4.0 THE LATEST DEVELOPMENT ICT

Hardware

(try the latest version of nokia) One example of latest hardware is Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a smartphone and portable entertainment device by Nokia. It was introduced on October 2, 2008 and released on November 27, 2008. Code-named "Tube", it is the first touchscreen-equipped S60 device by Nokia. The version being s60v5. It's part of the XpressMusic series of phones, which emphasizes music and multimedia playback. The touchscreen features tactile feedback (though it does not use Nokia's Haptikos technology.). The 5800 has a compatibility mode for Java applications that are not touchscreen-aware. It works by using part of the screen for displaying the essential buttons required by the program Compare Nokia 5800 XpressMusic with Nokia N95

Software

One example of latest software is Windows 7. Windows 7 is a version of Microsoft Windows, a series of operating systems produced by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, netbooks, tablet PCs, and media center PCs. Windows 7 was released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009, and reached general retail availability on October 22, 2009, less than three years after the release of its predecessor, Windows Vista. Windows 7's server counterpart, Windows Server 2008 R2, was released at the same time. Windows 7 will be succeeded by Windows 8, which has no release date as of yet.

However, Ubuntu is now available on all System76 computers, some Dell computers, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop on some Lenovo ThinkPads.[23] Recently many more Linux-based low-end consumer laptops have been introduced.[24] See also: Comparison of Subnotebooks 92.00%

5.0 Persasive Computing

Meaning of persasive computing

The trend towards an information environment in which users have access to ICTs throughout the environment. This trend is particularly associated with the growth of wireless technologies that allow users to access online information and services remotely and synchronise data between different computers.

Examples of pervasive computing

Wearable computer

Wearable computers are computers that are worn on the body. This type of wearable technology has been used in behavioral modeling, health monitoring systems, information technologies and media development. Wearable computers are especially useful for applications that require computational support while the user's hands, voice, eyes, arms or attention are actively engaged with the physical environment.

6.0 Conclusion
The source code are available to users and they have the rights to modify them. This will allow improvements to the software without having to invest large sum of money in research and development .The modified and improved source codes can be freely redistributed. The open source software is created according to industry demands but allows for upgrades to take place freely when the need arises. Therefore, if bugs in the codes are found, they can be fixed by anyone interested and capable. Fixes and patches to rectify the bugs are rapidly developed .The software can be used in any way and for any legal purposes. There is no restriction in a unilateral way on how the software could be used. The importantce of persasive coporating is rapidly increasing with the trend towards universal presence mobile.
