I. Objective Identify the producers, consumers and decomposers in an ecosystem Values Care for the living organisms II. Subject Matter Components of an ecosystem Science Concept(s)/ Idea(s) The three components of an ecosystem are producers, consumers and decomposers. The producers are the green plants. They are so-called because they are the makers of food in the ecosystem by the process of photosynthesis. Only green plants can make food because of their chlorophyll, the green substance that can capture sunlight. Food is the basic requirement of all living things in any ecosystem. The consumers are the animals. They cannot make their own food so they depend on plants and other animals. There are three classifications of consumers; these are primary consumers (herbivores), secondary consumers (carnivores) and tertiary consumers (omnivores). The decomposers are the microorganisms that feed on dead plants and animals. They are so-called because they break down the remains of dead plants and animals and bring the materials back where they come from. LCD Projector and Screen, Monitors and Computer Laser pointer Wiimote interactive whiteboard III. Learning Activities A. Preliminary Activities Let the pupils cite examples of animals and the food they eat. B. Motivation The teacher will ask the pupils to stand up and do the Froggy Dance. (Steps are to be shown in the projection screen.) Ask: What would happen to man and animals if there were no plants and trees on earth? C. Presentation 1. Let the pupils observe the sample ecosystem.

a. Ask: What can you see in the sample ecosystem? 2. Let the pupils answer Activity 1. Activity 1: What are the biotic components of an ecosystem? What to use: A sample ecosystem What to do: Observe the picture of an aquarium.

What you have found out: a. What are the biotic components in the aquarium shown? 3. Present another example of an ecosystem.

Emphasize the following (using PowerPoint presentation). a. Food as a basic requirement of all living things in any ecosystem b. The three biotic components of the ecosystem producers, consumers, and decomposers. c. The producers are the green plants. They are so-called because they are the makers of food in the ecosystem by the process of photosynthesis. Only green plants can make food because of their chlorophyll, the green substance that can capture sunlight. Food is the basic requirement of all living things in any ecosystem. d. The consumers are the animals. They cannot make their own food so they depend on plants and other animals. There are three classifications of consumers; these are primary consumers (herbivores), secondary consumers (carnivores) and tertiary consumers (omnivores). e. The decomposers are the microorganisms that feed on dead plants and animals. They are so-called because they break down the remains of dead plants and animals and bring the materials back where they come from. D. Concept Formation Guide the learners to define the terms producer, consumer and decomposer. Why an aquarium is considered an ecosystem? Ask them to give other examples of ecosystem and identify the components.

E. Application 1. In form of a game The teacher will tell the pupils to classify the following biotic components as producer, consumer, or decomposer. The pupils will line up in their corresponding answers. CONSUMER DECOMPOSER

PRODUCER

a. Roses b. Butterfly c. Fungi d. Deer e. Mushroom f. Corn g. Raccoon h. Molds i. Cayote j. Seaweeds 2. Written Ask the pupils to get three pieces of bond paper. Let them draw three examples for each component of an ecosystem: producers, consumers and decomposers. IV. Evaluation Tell whether the following is a producer, consumer, or decomposer. 1. mango tree 2. earthworm 3. man 4. snail 5. sea weeds 6. pig 7. chicken 8. caterpillar 9. ants 10. bacteria

V. Assignment Identify whether the animal is an herbivore, carnivore or omnivore. 1. tiger 2. fish 3. man 4. bird 5. dog
