The course covers the fundamental electronic circuit applications which include power supply unit, filters and operational amplifier, timer, oscillator and AD/DA converters. The contents cover circuit configurations, operations and applications. LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. NO OBJECTIVES Explain correctly the basic principles of linear dc power supply and various types of sinusoidal oscillator by using block diagram or circuit schematic. Explain correctly the basic principles of operational amplifier PLO 1 based on appropriate configuration. Identify correctly the methods of converting digital signals to PLO 2 analogue signals (DAC) and vise versa by using the related circuits. Construct application electronic circuits during practical works based on the theory and principle operation of the circuits. 1.0 LINEAR DC POWER SUPPLY Block diagram and functions of a transformer, rectifier, filter, voltage regulator and divider. Types of rectifier, filter and regulator circuits. 2.0 OSCILLATORS Types of Sinusoidal wave oscillator; Phase Shift. Armstrong, Hartley, Colpitts, Crystal Oscillator. Comparison between the different types of oscillator. 3.0 OPERATIONAL AMPLIFIERS (OP-AMP) Basic concept of Differential Amplifier, Op-Amp characteristics. Different configurations of op-amp: inverting amplifier, noninverting amplifier, voltage follower, summing amplifier, subtractor, instrumentation amplifier, differentiator, integrator. Linear applications: log and antilog amplifier, voltage-to-current converter, current-to-voltage converter. Non-linear applications: comparator. MID SEMESTER BREAK 4.0 TIMERS Operation and applications of timer integrated circuits; 555/556 ICs. Different modes of timer circuit: astable, bistable and monostable modes. Schmitt trigger. 5.0 FILTERS Different types of passive filters: low-pass filter, high-pass filter, band-pass filter. Frequency response curve. Application of op amp in active filters. 6.0 AD / DA CONVERTERS The working principles of analogue to digital and digital to analogue converters. Analogue to digital converter circuits: resistive divider circuit and R-2R ladder circuit. Digital to analogue converter circuits: digital ramp, successive approximation. STUDY WEEK
