DESIGN OF THE CONTINIOUS SLAB:Assume the width of the beam = 300mm. & column size = 600mm * 600mm
Spacing of the beam = 4.5m = 4500mm.
Clear span = (4500-150-150) mm = 4200mm.

To find the effective span:Clear span/12 = 4200mm/12 = 350mm > 300mm (the width of the support
(beam)).
[Ref: Cl-22.2 (a) IS 456:2000]

Let effective depth = l/30

d = l/30 = 4.5/30m = 150mm.
Then overall depth = (150+30+5) mm =185mm.

lx = 12m
ly = 4.2m
lx / ly = 12/4.2 = 2.85 > 2
So we can assume a one way continuous slab of 1m width strip .
End span effective length, left= Smaller of (4200 + 300/2 + 300/2) mm
= 4500mm
& (4200+150) mm = 4350mm
So the left for end span is =4350mm
It is same for all span so, the left is for both end span & intermediate spans
= 4350mm

Weight calculation:-

Self weight = 0.185*25 KN/m2 = 4.625 KN/m2

Total dead load = (4.625+1) KN/m2 = 5.625 KN/m2
Total factored load = (1.5*5.625) = 8.44KN/m2
Live load = 4 KN/m2
Factored live load = (1.5*4) =6 KN/m2

Moment calculation:-

Fixed end moment = - {1/24(8.44) + 1/24(6)}*4.352 KN-m = -11.38 KN-m

=-11.38*106 N-mm

Moment at middle next to end support = {1/12(8.44) + 1/10(6)}*4.352 KN-m

=24.66 KN-m
=24.66*106 N-mm

Moment at support next to end support = - {1/10(8.44) +1/9(6)}*4.352 KN-m

= - 28.58KN .m
= -28.58*106 N-mm

Moment at middle of all the

span = {1/16(8.44) +1/12(6)}*4.352 KN-m

= 19.44 KN-m
= 19.44*106 N-mm

Check for depth:Check for depth, d= [mu/0.138fckb]1/2

= [28.58*106/0.138*25*1000]1/2
= 91.02 mm
d = 91.02mm < 150 mm , hence safe.

Mulim = 0.36(xu,max/d){1-0.42(xu,max/d)}*bd2*fck

[Ref. Annex G G-1.1.c IS 456:2000]

= 0.36*0.48(1-0.42*0.48)*1000*1502*25
= 77.6 KN-m > 28.58 KN-m
So the section is under reinforced.

Calculation for reinforcement:Mu = 0.87fyAstd (1-Astfy/fckbd2) [Ref. Annex G G-1.1.b IS 456:2000]

Or, 28.58*106 = 0.87*415*150*Ast*(1-Ast415/25*1000*1502)
Or, (1 - Ast/1355421.69)*Ast = 527.72
Or, Ast2 1355421.69*Ast + 715283132.5=0

Or, Ast = 532.43mm2

Spacing = (3.14*82/4*532.43) * 1000 mm

=94.36 mm
Provide 15 no of 8dia bar @ 90 mm. c-c
Ast provided = 50*15 =750mm2
Distribution steel:0.12% of gross area = (0.12*150*1000/100) mm2

[Ref. Cl-26.5.2.1 IS 456:2000]

= 180 mm2

Then spacing of 8dia bars = (50*1000/180) mm

= 278 mm. c-c < 750mm or 5d
Provide 4 nos. of 8dia bars @ 350mm c-c
So Ast provided = 50*4 mm2
= 200 mm2

Check for deflection:fx = 0.58*fy*(Ast required/Ast provided) [Ref. Cl-23.2.1 IS 456:2000]

= 0.58*415*(532.43/750)
= 170.87 mm < 185 mm, hence safe.

Check for shear:Pt = 100*Ast / bd = (100*532.43) / (1000*150) = 0.355

For Pt = 0.25, c = 0.36 & Pt = 0.50, c = 0.49 [Ref. table-19 IS 456:2000]

For Pt = 0.355, c = 0.36 + (0.49-0.36)*(0.355-0.25) / (0.50-0.25) = 0.4146
= 0.41
& k = 1.2 for D=200 as here D=185 [Ref. Cl-40.2.1.1 IS 456:2000]
So enhanced permissible shear strength for concrete = 1.2*0.41
= 0.49 N/mm2
Max. Permissible shear stress in concrete, max = 3.1

[Ref. Table-20 IS 456:2000]

Then maximum shear force Vu = Wbl/2 = 31.41 KN
So nominal shear stress, v =Vu/bd [Ref. Cl-40.1 IS 456:2000]
= (31.41*103) / (1000*150)
= 0.209 N/mm2 < 1.55 N/mm2 = 1/2 max

[Ref. Cl-40.2.3.1 IS 456-2000]

Hence ok.

Also v = 0.195 N/mm2 < 0.205 N/mm2 = 1/2 c

[Ref. Cl-26.5.1.6 IS 456:2000]

Hence no shear reinforcement has to be provided.
