TOPIC: WHY I WANT TO BE A NURSE BY: TO: INSTRUCTOR:

Nursing is a great profession, very much in demand today. A look through the newspaper in any community, large or small, rural or urban, you see jobs for two things: truck drivers and nurses. Check the greensheet, check the Dallas Morning news, and what do you see? Adverts for Nurses!!! As a Nurse, I can take my skills wherever I want to go. There are nursing positions available throughout the United States as well as internationally for qualified people from every ethnic and religious background. And nursing isn't just confined to the hospital; I can practice in hundreds of settings. Lets look at a few of the reasons: Home care, community and public health agencies, independent practice, ambulatory care centers, US Public Health Service, military services (Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines), Veteran's Administration Medical Centers, extended care centers, clinics, offices, schools, corporations, health-related industries, hospice, occupational settings, and health and wellness centers, Anywhere that people need health care services I can work there as a nurse. As a nurse I can diversify into different areas of nursing practice: caring for children, adults, and the elderly, services for pregnant women and newborn infants, operating room, critical care and emergency departments, women's health and mental health. And there are many sub-specialty nursing areas such as sports injury nursing, cancer nursing, cardiac care, and newborn intensive care nursing where I can find application of my nursing knowledge. Nursing can take me to anywhere around the country and even around the world. I may choose to work in one permanent setting, or take short-term assignments as a travel nurse to fulfill temporary projects for nursing staff internationally. If I am less tied down with family or other obligations, these temporary nursing assignments will be prefect for me or anyone just wanting to see the world... on my own terms. It makes me to have a choice. As a nurse I can even serve in key government and elected positions, advocating for the health care needs of all people. Or I can choose to take advantage of ample continuing education opportunities, and become a nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, nurse educator, researcher, or a nurse manager. Nurses assist in creating legislations that make a real difference in how health care is administered in this country and around the world. As a nurse the sky is my limit. REASONS WHY I WANT TO BE A NURSE On a frank note, the current nursing shortage is now a crisis and is growing. The average age of nurses is increasing and schools cannot replace them quickly enough. The nation needs my help so I consider becoming a nurse! Why would I want to be a nurse? Here are some great reasons why I want to become a nurse. 1) Employment Opportunities- Currently, there is a shortage of 300,000 nurses worldwide. In the next 15-20 years, this number is estimated to increase to 800,000. With these numbers, finding a job right after school is no problem.

2) Nurse Job Opportunities are Expanding- Nowadays; physicians are spending less and less time with the patients resulting with a bigger role for nurses. Nurses are now providing more direct care to patients than ever. 3) Rewarding Job- There are few jobs out there that are as rewarding as being a nurse. Each day I will have a lasting impact on patients lives, and I might have the opportunity to save someones life. There is no reward greater than that. I want to follow the step of the lady with the lamp. 4) Great Income- As a nurse I only need two years of training, and I am off to becoming a nurse. With the current nurse deficit, finding a job right after school shouldnt be a problem. Right after school, I could make more than $55,000 a year. As I gain experience, salaries quickly top $70,000 a year! This is more tax to the government. It is also a security that I will be able to take care of my debts and be out of debt as quickly as possible than the penurious state I experience now, living paycheck to paycheck. I will be financially buouyant to help others. I love helping others except for the lack I experience now. 5) Job Security- Nurses have one of the most secure jobs you can have. While a factory worker might get laid off, hospitals cant afford to fire nurses. There will always be sick and diseased people in the world, so nurses will never become obsolete and the job cant be sent off-shore. As a nurse, I will be needed to care for the sick, the aged, and the disabled. In epidemics I will be needed. In pregnancy, I will be needed. In areas of emergency, tsunamis, earthquakes and natural disasters, as a nurse, I will be needed. Just name it! 6) Great Schedule- If I want to avoid the typical 9-5 workday and spend more time with my wife, nursing provides very flexible schedules. If I want to work business hours, I can choose to work in a hospital or clinic. If I want to work in shifts, hospitals need nurses 24/7. 7) Nursing Serves as a Platform- If I want to become a family physician or a cardiologist, nursing serve as a great stepping stone for my medical career. Having a nursing background will look great on resumes and help me find a job much easier. Above all, I want to combine, nursing knowledge, Medical technology knowledge, Pharmacy tech knowledge to help the world as much as I can. 8) Variety- Unlike a lot of people think, there are many types of nurses out there. If I like to work with people, I can choose a hospital or a clinic. As I like children, I can work in a pediatrics ward or convalescent home. Insurance companies, schools, parishes. The possibilities are endless for me as a nurse. I love being a nurse. I love nurses because they are caring. There are many nurses in my family and I want to join the league of our family nurses. So there are tons of reasons to become a nurse. If you think you would love it, jump in with me dont let any obstacles stand in your way. Nursing is hard work though. You need to be giving 100% of the time. You often dont get credit for healthcare successes. But you help people. You touch souls and change lives. Why not jump on in and let us make a difference?
