HED: MSHS INVITES COMMUNITY TO FREE CRAIG CONRAD UNSTOPPABLE PRESENTATION

MORLEY Morley Stanwood Community Schools will learn to become unstoppable from inspirational speaker Craig Conrad on Oct. 17. In addition to Conrads presentations for students, the community is invited to hear his advice on improving the lives of their families and children from 7 to 8:15 p.m. on Oct. 17 at Morley Stanwood High School. An all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner will be served in the high school cafeteria from 5 to 6:30 p.m. before Conrads event. The cost is $5 per person for everyone older than 5, with proceeds going to the junior and senior class funds. Conrad, who has 25 years of teaching experience, has addressed more than 142,000 students, teachers and parents across the country with his The Unstoppable You character development program. The author of Unstoppable: Inspiring Lessons for the Unstoppable You, Conrad also has developed an easy-to-use curriculum to help teachers communicate the concepts to their students. While at Morley Stanwood, Conrad will give presentations for all seventh- through 12thgraders, a leadership session for 40 high school juniors and seniors and the free community event on Oct. 17. Kindergartners through sixth-graders and staff members will host Conrad on Oct. 18. Shari ONeil, an English and geometry teacher at MSHS, was instrumental in bringing Conrad to the district. Her brother, a teacher at Chippewa Hills School District, gave her Conrads Unstoppable book. After reading it, ONeil contacted Conrad and he told her he also did school presentations. I thought every teacher in my building should read this, ONeil said. Unstoppable is based on Conrads experiences as a teacher. As budget cuts threatened to end the shop program at his school, Conrad was given one year to make the class a success, which led him to develop the Unstoppable strategy that ultimately generated revenue for the shop class and made students in it more successful. After ONeil presented Conrads program to Morley Stanwoods anti-bullying committee, the group worked to bring Conrad to the district. His presentation will address bullying as well as drug and alcohol abuse, ghting apathy and working to be above average. The Morley American Legion and Country Inn and Suites in Big Rapids, plus numerous school groups, helped fund Conrads presentation. For more information, visit www.craigconrad. com or call MSHS at (231) 856-4444.

Sittings are by appointment only. All appointments scheduled and paid for by Nov. 2 will fund Manna Pantrys submission to the Mecosta County Community Foundation Match Day event on Nov. 3. This will increase the money that we will have to buy food, especially food for the food bank, Kempton said. PhotoBoutique is located at 20971 14 Mile Road in Big Rapids. To schedule an appointment, call (231) 796-2354.

HUNKERING DOWN WITH HOME IMPROVEMENT: 3 SENSIBLE PROJECTS

Share | (NewsUSA) - One thing for sure in this unpredictable economy is that homeowners are staying put. In fact, most people do not plan to move any time soon, according to a 2011 Harris Interactive poll. This shift from sell to stay is why it pays for homeowners to look beyond resale value when making home improvement decisions. As Designer and HGTV Personality Lori Dennis explains, People today are looking more holistically at home remodeling, choosing projects that add comfort, efciency and functionality. In this new era of home improvement, three projects stand out. Window Replacement Nothing does more to enhance the look and feel of a home than windows -- they are visible inside and outside and can add comfort by helping to eliminate drafts and regulate temperatures. They can also pay off as an investment. Advancements in energyefcient windows are helping homeowners save 30 percent or more on energy bills, not to mention recoup about 70 percent of the cost of window replacement. The latest window designs include a combination of energy efciency, durability and aesthetics. The Essence Series from Milgard, for example, comes Energy Star rated and features a beautiful wood interior and durable berglass exterior. Outdoor Spaces According to a survey by the American Institute of Architects, more than 60 percent of architects say they have seen an increase in outdoor living space requests. Since owners are thinking long-term, patios, decks, sunrooms and other spaces contribute to both the experience at home and its property value. Its possible to earn back 50 to 75 percent of the cost of your outdoor addition. Kitchen Remodeling The kitchen is the heart of the home and an opportunity to set the tone for style and functionality. Two of the most popular ways to expand kitchen work space are to add an island/peninsula and natural lighting. Modern kitchen solutions feature cabinets and drawers that open, organize and spin in convenient ways. Homeowners can recoup about 70 percent of their kitchen-remodeling costs. For more remodeling tips and windowreplacement budgeting tools, visit www. milgard.com/lp/smart-investment.

Fruit offers ber and minerals to improve performance in class, provide energy for sports and curb appetites. Encouraging children to eat fruit as their snack may also help reduce their risk for cardiovascular diseases, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and strokes later on in life. Get creative during the school year with your afternoon snack preparations. One way to go is to stuff different fruit concoctions in whole wheat tortilla wraps to add a hearty twist to a sweet snack. For example, try this quick and easy Banana and Raisin Wrap recipe from La Tortilla Factory: Banana and Raisin Wrap 1 La Tortilla Factory-100 Calorie Whole Wheat Tortilla. 1 small banana, sliced. 2 tablespoons of raisins. 4 tablespoons of fat-free whipped cream cheese. 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon powder. Directions: Lay the wheat tortilla on a plate and spread the cream cheese very evenly. Layer banana slices along the center of the tortilla. Sprinkle the raisins over the bananas, then sprinkle the cinnamon powder over the layered fruit.

Share | (NewsUSA) - Between 1.6 and 2.8 million youth run away each year in the U.S. The brutal cold of winter is only one of the threats that runaway youth will struggle to overcome. According to the National Runaway Switchboard (NRS) 2011 Runaway Youth Longitudinal Study, the long-term impact on their health, economic and legal outcomes as adults is another signicant risk. Long-term consequences of youth running away should encourage parents, teachers and other adults to get involved earlier to prevent a runaway situation, said Maureen Blaha, NRS executive director. Hopefully, knowing the potential consequences also deters youth from running away. For adults who ran away from home as adolescents, the likelihood of having suicidal thoughts increases 51 percent, they are more than three times as likely to attempt suicide, the likelihood of them being a smoker is 2.4 times as high, they are 67 percent more likely to use marijuana, and they are 53 percent more likely to report having a sexually transmitted disease. Running away doesnt just affect health -it also impacts the economy. As an adult, a former runaways annual income level is $8,823 lower on average and the likelihood of being a recipient of AFDC, public assistance or welfare is 76 percent higher. The negative effects of running away dont stop there. Adults who ran away as adolescents are approximately 2.5 times more likely to be arrested, and they are 99 percent more likely to sell drugs. The key is runaway prevention, and NRS offers a few tips for parents to keep their child from running away: * Understand Your Child. Try to sympathize with what your kids are going through, and look at life from their point of view. * Discuss Feelings. Talk about what it feels like to be a parent, and encourage your children to talk about their feelings, too. When parents share their feelings, children know its safe to share theirs. * Use Teamwork. Work together to nd mutually agreeable solutions. Find help and information for runaway, homeless and at-risk youth by visiting www.1800RUNAWAY.org or by contacting

PREPARE YOURSELF AND YOUR VEHICLE FOR DRIVING AT NIGHT

Share | (NewsUSA) - Along with the beauty that cooler days give us also comes fewer daylight hours. While you should practice caution when driving no matter the season, its important to take extra precautions this time of year to prepare yourself and your vehicle for nighttime driving. As the days get shorter, and inclement weather descends upon us, Firestone Complete Auto Care would like to provide the following tips. * Develop a habit to make sure your tires are properly inated, rotated and in good condition. * Make sure your lights and mirrors are clean and properly positioned. Incorrectly aimed headlights can temporarily blind other drivers and reduce your ability to see the road. Properly aligned mirrors also reduce blind spots. * When in doubt, turn on your headlights. Even if they dont help you see better, theyll make it easier for other drivers to see you. * Use high beams sparingly. Live in an area with high fog? Its not a good idea to use your high beams. Instead, you should use only your low beam headlights, since high beams reduce your ability to see. Some newer vehicles even come equipped with special fog lights.

HOW TO PREP A FRUITFUL SCHOOL SNACK

Share | (NewsUSA) - A healthy diet is a necessity for individuals of all ages, but getting enough nutrients is especially important for schoolage children. Not only are children learning and developing eating habits that will follow them throughout their adult life, they also need the right kind of fuel to stay focussed during the school day. At times, children can be tricky. They may not always agree to eat celery sticks and peanut butter as a school-day snack. However, natural sugars, like those in fruit, instead of processed and value-less candy and potato chips, can play a key role in getting children to snack healthily -- especially when they may be short on time.

BIG RAPIDS Through a new fundraising partnership, families can now get a professional portrait and support a local food pantry for just $30. Brad and Sharon Byers, owners of PhotoBoutique, will take family portraits for a special fee of $30 from now until Nov. 24, with all of the proceeds beneting the Manna Pantry. Participants can write off the expense as a donation to a nonprot, and they also get a free 8-by-10-inch photo with the option to order more. This is a neat opportunity. Its a win-win, said Isabel Kempton, coordinator of Manna Pantry, located in St. Andrews Episcopal Church.

* Maintain your ability to see well, and adjust your vehicles interior lighting if necessary. If streetlights cause a lot of glare, dim your dashboard lights and use your sun

visor. Avoid using any other light inside your vehicle.

* Switch your rearview mirror to its night setting. By changing the angle of the reective surface, the lights reecting in your mirror will appear to be dimmed.

shouldnt make a hasty decision. Neglecting to weigh the costs and potential risks could put rst-time landlords in a poor situation. Moco, Inc., a company that provides screening services to property owners, managers and employers throughout the United States, offers the following tips: * Look at the numbers. Renting might not be the best option. If youre going to lose money each month, it might make more sense to sell, even if you wont get your asking price. Consider all potential costs, including property taxes, income taxes on your tenants rent, maintenance, and the normal wear and tear your property will experience. Remember that you wont be able to pocket all of the rent money; you will have to put a portion of it back into the property. * Find quality tenants. Nightmare tenants can be, well, a nightmare. Prepare for a careful screening process. Many private landlords cant access the quality screening products available to larger businesses without going through a lengthy certication process. However, you can avoid time and expense by asking your applicants to visit MyScreeningReport.com. The report includes a consumer credit report, SSN verication, comprehensive criminal search, eviction search, national sex offender registry search and an OFAC (federal terrorism database) search -- everything you need to determine whether a potential tenant meets your standards. * Use an all-encompassing lease. Whether you use a template or hire an attorney to write your lease, make sure that the lease clearly states your expectations. The lease should state who is responsible for what, when you expect rent to be paid and what

penalties you will impose if it is late. For more information, MyScreeningReport.com. visit www.

* Clean your windshield inside and out. Keeping your windows clean -- especially the windshield -- is crucial to road safety. Wipe down your windows each time you wash your car, and rell wiper uid regularly.

SMOOTH SAILING WITH PROPER TIRE SAFETY

Share | (NewsUSA) - Dont wait until theres nothing left between you and the rainslick pavement to check your tires. The likelihood of accidents skyrockets when combining wet, seasonal weather and poor tire maintenance. Proper tire and pressure maintenance can prevent all kinds of road accidents, but drivers must be aware of the warning signs and ongoing maintenance needs to ensure driving safety. For example, an underinated tire might not look at to the eye. A tire can lose up to 50 percent of its air before it begins to show visually. According to the National Highway Trafc Safety Administration (NHTSA), tire pressure literally changes the way the rubber meets the road, affecting traction, handling, steering, stability and braking. Similarly, NHTSA estimates that nearly 250,000 accidents occur in the U.S. per year due to low tire pressure. Statistics like these remind drivers how quickly collisions occur under preventable circumstances. Schrader, a global manufacturer of sensing and valve solutions that protect and perform, recommends the following advice to keep your tires roadready in all conditions: * Check your tire pressure regularly, especially before any long trips. Ination pressure changes depending on the

temperature. Tire pressure drops about 1 psi for every 10 degrees F drop in ambient temperature. Additionally, tires can lose as much as 1.5 psi per month as air escapes the tire and rim naturally. Its best to check tire pressure when the car is off and tires are coolest. * Heed the TPMS warning symbol. All passenger vehicles and light trucks sold in the U.S. from 2008 onward have a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) system installed. If the TPMS warning symbol lights up on your dashboard, one or more of your tires is 25 percent or more underinated -a signicant loss in pressure. Take caution, and do not ignore the TPMS warning symbol. * Find a safe place to pull out of trafc to stop and check your tires. If you are not having a blowout, use a tire gauge to check the pressure of each tire against your vehicle manufacturers recommended pressure level. Inate tires to correct pressure at the nearest service station or repair facility. The recommended pressure level can be found on the tire placard, a label located just inside the drivers side door. * Dont forget the spare. Before long drives, always check your spare for any injuries or punctures. For more tips on how TPMS ensures driver safety, please visit www.TPMSMadeSimple. com.

Whether its in the bright of day or dead of night, you should always take the necessary precautions to ensure that youre driving safely and that your vehicle is road ready. www.

THREE HELPFUL TIPS FOR RENTING OUT YOUR HOME

Share | (NewsUSA) - Home ownership has always been a part of the American dream, but that may be changing. Uncertainty in the housing market has led many would-be buyers to believe that rentings the better option.

According to a May 2010 online survey commissioned by the National Apartment Association, 76 percent of consumers think that renting is preferable to owning a home in todays market.

Likewise, some homeowners believe its better to rent out their home than to sell it for less than its worth, if they can sell it all. Those considering renting out their property
