Mission Statement

Golden Jubilee

The Council attained 50 years of Municipal status this year. The occasion was graced by the Honorable Minister of Local Government and Housing, Hon. Sylvia T Masebo, MP. The minister also launched the Mufulira play park.
Mufulira district lies between longitude 12 degrees 5 East and 28 degrees 30 East and latitude 12 degrees 21 and 12 degrees 40 South of the Equator and covers an area of 1,258 square kilometers in the copper belt province of Zambia. The district shares borders with several districts in the province, namely, Kitwe, Kalulushi, Ndola ,Chingola and Chililabombwe. It also shares an international boundary with Congo DR in the North East.

Geographical

Transport connections It is well connected to these major towns and cities in Zambia through railway network and tarred roads. Air craft services are obtained in Ndola 79 kilometers South East of Mufulira. The district has an air strip.

General Characteristics of the District


Climate Mufulira experiences a tropical type of climate with a temperature ranging between 17.4 and 23.2 degrees Celsius, and the district falls in the Agro-climatic region three as a high rainfall belt and experiences above 1,200 millimeters of rainfall annually.

Population Distribution The population of Mufulira is 152,664 of which 76,552 are males and 76,112 are female. (2000 census). However, Parliamentary estimates for 2002 population projections are 10,285,631 persons representing 5,070,891 males and 5,214,740 females. Language Economy

Bemba and English with some traces of Lamba. Mufulira district is predominately a mining town and the mines still remains the largest employers. The district also has other categories of workers in the formal sector. Others are African Explosives, Industrial and commercial undertakings. The district boasts of five (5) commercial banks and 3 micro lending institutions. The other main sources of livelihood include retailing, subsistence farming, Charcoal production, carpentry, beer brewing and crafts.
