Sean Maley Head of Humanities American International School Bucharest

Letter of Reference for Tiffany Hay October 11, 2011 To Whom It May Concern: It has been my pleasure to work with Tiffany Hay for the better part of the past ten years, first as a colleague and member of her Social Studies Department at Shanghai American School. Most recently, I have served as her Head of Department for Humanities at the American International School of Bucharest, and worked with her in her role as Diploma Coordinator. It is with this long term experience that I can speak to her effectiveness as a teacher and colleague. Tiffany has exceptional range of skills as a teacher. Tiffany employs an impressive array of teaching techniques for any particular lesson, a fact that has always impressed me as a fellow teacher. Students enjoy an extraordinary variety of learning opportunities in her classes. For example, I have observed Tiffany using picture dictation, creating wikis with students, using classroom fishbone outlines, as well as doing revision review activities such as bingo and hot potato quizzes (an online quiz application). All of this starts with her planning. Tiffanys units are thoughtfully structured, with different learning styles and skill levels in mind. She puts it to the test with her students. Tiffany regularly collects student feedback on whats working for students and adapts her methods and materials as needed. As in all areas of her teaching, this is accomplished neatly, with online surveys that transmit valuable data back to her about what works best for her students. Though an accomplished veteran teacher, shes consistently revising her teaching. This keeps things fresh for her, for her students, and provides an excellent model for other teachers. Its important to note that Tiffany is among the most accomplished users of technology. Tiff regularly shows me something new shes doing with her students, be it the use of prezis instead of power point, getting the most out of Moodle, using document cameras Smartboards, blogging with students, and more along these lines than I can count. If she were interested, I would recommend your school create a special role for her as a technology adviser for teachers. Shes simply that good with educational technology. It must be evident by now that I regard Tiffany as among the most effective colleagues I have had the pleasure of working with. Shes served with distinction as a head of department, Diploma Coordinator, and has been the de-facto curriculum coordinator at AISB for the past several years. Beyond that, shes collegial and friendly, with a good sense of humor and is generous with her time among colleagues. I recommend her highly, without reservation. Sean Maley Head of Humanities - AISB
