1 Introduction
AI3 project has been trying to enhance availability of satellite receivers for AI3 C-
band UDL network in cooperation with SOI-Asia project. This article describes the
operation of UDBox, which is a new satellite receiver developed by UDCast.

2 Power Unit Setting

Before turning on UDBox, the voltage switch, which is the red dip switch in the back
surface as shown in the figure 1, must be set appropriately in order to avoid the power
trouble.

Figure 1: Voltage Switch in the Back Surface

3 UDBox Installation
Those steps are summarized as following.

1
1. Preparation: Connect a PC with a web browser to ”fxp0” network interface on
UDBox.
2. Step-by-Step Configuration: Access UDBox via web interface and start step-by-
step configuration.
3. Network Installation: Connect UDBox to the RO network.
4. Tuner Configuration: Configure RF settings to correctly the receive satellite link.
5. Status Check: Check the connectivity to the Internet AI3 C-band UDL.

3.1 Preparation
Before starting the step by step configuration, connect a PC with a web browser to
”fxp0” network interface on UDBox as shown in the figure 2. Then, give the IP ad-
dress ”172.31.3.2” to the PC and check the connectivity to ”172.31.3.1” which is UD-
Box’s IP address. Here, note that ”fxp0” is basically used only for this step-by-step
configuration, and not used for further operation.

3.2 Step-by-Step Configuration

Access UDBox’s URL on the web browser to start the step-by-step configuration as
shown in the table 1.

Table 1: UDBox WEB Interface

UDBox URL https://172.31.3.1:3131/
User Name udadmin
Password udadmin

Accept the certificate, which is shown when the PC is successfully access UDBox’s
web interface. Then the top page of web interface is shown like the figure 3. Then
proceed to the step-by-step configuration by choosing ”Step-by-step configuration”.
UDBox requests to choose its wizard mode for the step-by-step configuration: stan-
dard or encrypted mode. Then choose standard like the figure 4.
The step-by-step configuration has 6 steps. The handling in each step is totally
same: enter some values and press ”Apply” button at the bottom of the window.

3
3.2.1 Configuration Step 1
Step 1 is for giving an IP address and its default route to UDBox as shown in the figure
5 and table 2.

Figure 5: Configuration Step 1

Table 2: Configuration Step 1

Parameter Name Value Remarks
Default router IP Private IP address of RR

Automatically choose ... No, specify it
192.168.0.1

Note that the IP address is for xl0 interface, which bridges packets from UDL and
captures packets from Receive Router to again send them to Receiver Router as those
packets are encapsulated in GRE header on the box.

3.2.2 Configuration Step2

Step 2 is for giving an IP address to fxp0 interface, which would not be used in the
further operation, and a name server IP address as shown in the figure 6 and table 3.
Although it is expected that UDBox would not use DNS, the name server IP address is
mandatory.
Because UDBox is designed so that only xl0 interface is for bridging UDL, note
that fxp0 interface is used only for initial configuration. Here UDBox has two IP
addresses, 192.168.1.254 as well as 172.31.3.1, which is now UDBox is using to accept
the connection from the configuration PC.

3.2.3 Configuration Step 3, 4 and 5
Step 3, 4 and 5 are to be skipped. Each configuration item could be left vacant as shown
in the figure 7, 8 and 9. Then just proceed to the last step.

Figure 7: Configuration Step 3

3.2.4 Configuration Step 6

Step 6 is the last of step-by-step configuration. Just click on ”Finish” button at the
bottom of the window like the figure 10, then the new configuration is applied to the
UDBox.
After the UDBox is restarted, another window like the figure 11 is displayed and
the step-by-step configuration is completed here.

3.3 Network Installation

UDBox is a satellite receiver that bridges traffic from AI3 satellite UDL to RR as the
gateway of each RO network. The basic topology of RO network is shown in the figure
12.
As shown in the figure 13, xl0 of UDBox is the bridging interface and to be con-
nected to RR. Coax. interface is for connecting the coax. cable from the satellite
antenna. Fxp0 interface is to be used only for configuration.
After connecting UDBox in the RO network, check the IP connectivity between
RR and UDBox, e.g. executing ”ping 192.168.0.1” at RR.

3.4 Tuner Configuration

The left part of UDBox configuration is the radio frequency setting. To configure the
radio frequency parameters, choose ”Enter UDadmin” at the top page of the WEB

interface. Select ”Network” followed by ”Interfaces” at the configuration menu in the
left side of window like shown in the figure 14.

Figure 14: UDadmin Menu

Then, select ptv0 from several interfaces appearing in the main windows like the
figure 15. This figure shows that the all radio frequency setting is done within this
window. As of July 27th, 2005, each parameter should be configured shown in the
table 4.
”Tuner Frequency” is the frequency which UDBox listens to receive the satellite
UDL, and is calculated by following expression.

Tuner Frequency = Low Band Offset − Satellite Frequency (1)

Because parameters for ”Satellite Frequency”, ”Symbol Rate” and ”Viterbi” could
be changed when AI3 Project changes its frequency allocation, these parameters should
be changed accordingly.

3.5 Status Check

After all configuration is completed, check the connectivity to the Internet.

3.5.1 Receiving Status of Satellite UDL

To check the receiving status of satellite UDL, check the ptv0 interface as done in the
section 4.1. Just above the ”Tuner Frequency” section, the receiving status is displayed.
If UDBox detects the carrier correctly, the status will be shown as ”Locked. Signal ??If
not, the status sill be like ”Not Locked”.

3.5.2 Network Connectivity
Based on that UDBox receives the target carrier correctly, check connectivity to the
Internet. On the receive router, try ”ping” and ”traceroute” to 202.249.25.193, which is
the UDL side interface of sfc-udl-feed.ai3.net operated in SFC. If it succeeds, UDBox
correctly works and the RR can communicate with others via UDL.

4 UDBox Maintenance
4.1 Configuration Change
To change the configuration of IP address or routing table, use the step-by-step config-
uration. To change the tuner configuration, follow the section .

4.2 Configuration and Status Check

To check the UDBox configuration, access UDadmin and check related values. The
important values for UDBox maintenance are shown in the table 5.

4.3 Reboot / Shutdown UDBox

To reboot UDBox, choose ”Reboot” button at the UDadmin. To shutdown UDBox,
choose ”Halt” button at the UDadmin and power off the UDBox.

5 Trouble Shooting
If there is any trouble on UDBox, check the UDBox status and report to operator@asia.soi.wide.ad.jp.
