The Meeqats

The Ihram
The literal meaning of Ihram is to make haram (forbidden). Wear before crossing the Meeqat Geographical boundaries. When a pilgrim pronounces the Niyyah (intention) of Hajj and Umrah and utters the Talbiyah, certain halal (permissible) things become haram for him.
Clipping nails, cutting or pull out hair or combing the hair. To use perfume or anything which contains fragrance. Hunting. Quarelling or using obscene tongue. To have sexual relations. The male must not wear sewn garments, even underwear, gloves or socks. It is permissible to use an umbrella to get shade and have a bath to cool oneself.

This combined action (Niyyah and Talbiyah) is called Ihram. The two sheets that a haji wears are figuratively known as Ihram but the real Ihram is Niyyah & Talbiyah.
Sandles which leaves top of feet bare. Head uncovered for men Women wear their normal clothes, the hands, feet and face should remain uncovered.

If someone wears these two sheets and does not declare his intention and utter Talbiyah, he does not become a Muhrim. That is why, before Niyyah and Talbiyah, he can cover his head during two rakahs of Nafl, an act which is not allowed in the real state of Ihram.
