Executive Function
In Deaf/Hard of Hearing Children and Adolescents

Summary:

Concepts and methods related to the executive functions have gained attention in the clinical and educational domains over the past decade. This workshop will increase the knowledge and expertise of parents, teachers, and related professionals regarding executive functions in children and adolescents, and will assist in developing skills to observe and address profiles of executive dysfunction. There will be valuable information for parents and professionals (college students, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, teachers of the deaf, etc.). Adults with hearing loss are also welcome to join us. Discounts will apply to AG Bell members.

The topic of executive function has received increasing attention over the past decade. This important set of self-regulatory functions plays a substantial role that is central to most other domains of functioning (e.g., attention, language, motor, etc.) with impact in the learning, social, behavioral and emotional domains. Executive functions do not constitute a singular or separate disorder, but contribute to, or are components of, many disorders, and recent research suggests that incorporating an executive model in the everyday classroom and home activities may enhance student success. The purpose of this workshop is to assist parents and professionals in developing an understanding of executive function concepts in general, and what we know about executive functions in Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and adolescents. Topics will include functional definitions and underlying concepts, components of the developing multi-domain executive system, executive contributions or characteristics of common disorders, and a general model for intervening with executive problems or enhancing everyday executive function. At the completion of this course, participants will be able to: 1. Define executive functions in general, discuss the relationships among sub domains or components of the executive system, and discuss relevant concepts as they affect learning, social, emotional and behavioral functioning. 2. Describe executive functions within a developmental framework, considering both the intrinsic maturation of the child as well as the changing environmental demands and expectations that place greater demands on the executive functions. 3. Describe a general model of intervention designed to support or enhance executive functions in the everyday environment.
