Practical 1 Title: Measurement in everyday life

Date: 01.12.2010

Aim: To take and compare measurements using different types of instruments. Introduction: ******* buat sendiri

Apparatus: Meter rule, vernier calipers, micrometer screw-gauge, beam balance, electronic balance. Materials: piece of copper wire, pencil, hair and teaspoon of spoon. Activity 1 : Measuring Length Procedures: 1. The diameter of a pencil, piece of copper wire and a strand of hair were measured by using the meter rule, vernier calipers and micrometer screw-gauge. 2. The measurements were repeated. 3. The results were tabulated. Results: Types of instruments
Meter rule 1.5 1.5 1.5 4.5 3 = 1.5 cm -

Micrometer screwgauge

Mastery of knowledge and skill question: 1. Of the three measuring instruments used to measure length, which is the most precise? Which is most accurate?(4 marks) According to the results above, we can see that the measuring instruments used to measure length, which is the most precise is micrometer screw gauge and the most accurate is vernier callipers. 2. If a students uses a meter rile to measure the thickness of an object, it is not realistic for him to record the reading as 4.32 cm. Explain why? (3 marks) This is because the meter rule can be measure the length accurately up to 0.1 cm only. In addition, the meter rule not suitable to measure the thickness of an object. The most suitable instruments to measure the thickness of an objects is micrometer screw-gauge.

3. What instrument would you use to measure the thickness of a piece of paper? Explain. (4 marks) The instruments use to measure the thickness of a piece of paper is micrometer screw gauge. This is because micrometer screw gauge can measure length accurately up to 0.01 mm.

Conclusion: The most precise measuring instrument is micrometer screw gauge and the most accurate is vernier calipers.

Activity 2 : Measuring Mass Procedures: 1. The mass of a piece of pencil and a teaspoon of sand were measured by using the beam balance and the electronic balance. 2. The measurements were repeated. 3. The results were tabulated.

Results: Types of instruments Electronic balance Teaspoon of sand A peace of pencil

Beam balance

Mastery of knowledge and skill question: 1. Of the two measuring instruments used to measure mass, which is the most precise? Which is the most accurate? Explain (6 marks) The most precise measuring instruments used to measure mass is electronic balance. The more accurate is beam balance. This is because electronic balance

usually produce consistent reading compare the beam balance. The beam balance is more accurate because the reading is close with the actual value.

2. Name another balance which can be used to measure the mass in everyday life. (2 marks) Spring balance.

3. What have you learnt from the above two activities? (6 marks) What I can learnt from the above activities are firstly I learnt how to measure the length by using different types of instruments which are meter rule, vernier calipers and micrometer and there I can see the differences between the reading I got by using these three types of instruments. Then, I learnt how used these instruments with the proper way. In addition, I learnt how to use the beam balance which I think it is very unique to measure the mass. Finally, I know which it is important to use the electronic balance to measure the mass because it is more accurate and precise.

Conclusion: The electronic balance is most precise and the most accurate is beam balance.
