Scott Lehman Speaks on Behalf of Graduating Class

Ill always remember my father telling me and I quote, Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools talk because they have to say something. While I am honored to be speaking to you today on behalf of the graduating class and telling you about our accomplishments, I do have Something to Say to my fellow classmates. Let me plant this seed with you What will your legacy be? Its probably a question you have never been asked before. Whether youre here today because of The United Ways Annual Meeting, Leadership Butler Countys Graduation, The Red Apple Awards or The Spirit of Butler Award, we are all here to recognize one thing, our accomplishments. I have the honor and pleasure of telling you about the Leadership program and this years graduating class project. First, what is Leadership Butler County? When I was asked by my employer to participate in the program, I was a bit reluctant. It does require an investment of time. After participating in the program, I can honestly say it has been one of the more rewarding experiences in my 19-year career. We got to do things we would have never had the opportunity to do otherwise. We received an overview of the judicial system, toured the courthouse and the clock tower. We toured

the new jail and met with inmates, toured the underground mines in Boyers and got to see CORBIS, a vault owned by Bill Gates, and learned how to run for political office. Some of you are probably still wondering, What is Leadership Butler County? Leadership Butler County is an affiliate program of the Butler County Chamber of Commerce. Approximately 22 students from the private, public and non-profit sectors each year are selected to participate in a nine-month leadership program. Leadership Butler County focuses on improving the quality of life in Butler County. The program provides participants exposure to our communitys issues, the resources available to the community and opportunities for service in Butler County. The program teaches skills required to become an effective Community Leader. The students also take on a community project. Our Project: Our class chose to help the Blind Association of Butler and Armstrong County for their project. We had three goals, to increase the general Publics awareness of the blind and their needs, to increase the blind populations awareness of the Butler Blind Associations facility and resources available to them and to raise money to help fund a technology lab. The Results from our Project: An informational video was developed which can be distributed to local organizations detailing Blind Association services. Marketing materials were created for the blind association. In addition to several other fundraising events, the class created the Blind Ambitions bowl-a-thon which raised approximately $2,000 in contributions for the Blind Association. In total, the class raised $4,000 for the Blind Association, $1,000 for the Humane Society and $600 for the Leadership scholarship fund. $5,600 is a record for a Leadership class project. We are proud of our accomplishment. What is the Legacy of Leadership Butler County? In preparation for this day, I had the opportunity to review the presentations from prior class speakers. When looking at the accomplishments from past classes, one theme became very apparent. We had an opportunity to participate in something great. It is the Legacy of the Leadership program. There have been some amazing accomplishments from the past Leadership classes. What is the Legacy we the 2010 class are leaving behind? It is creating the Blind Ambition bowl-athon, which hopefully will continue to generate revenue for the Blind Association for years to come. In closing I have Something to Say to the graduating class: What is the Legacy you will leave behind? Will you utilize the skills you have developed and become a Community Leader? What will people remember about you in 10, 20 or 50 years? It wont be what you did today or even tomorrow but the accumulation of your lifes work. I challenge each of you to live your life working towards building your legacy, working in our community for our families, our County and our Country.

The Leadership Butler County Class of 2010 raised $5,600 for charity. Four-thousand dollars was donated to the Blind Association, $1,000 went to the Humane Society, and $600 was donated to the Leadership scholarship fund.

Leadership Butler County is an affiliate program of the Butler County Chamber of Commerce and will work in partnership with Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau, Slippery Rock University, Butler County Community College & United Way of Butler County.
