LABORATORY MATERIAL TESTING TECHNICIAN

DESCRIPTION:
Operates materials testing lab; inspects samples and tests constructional materials for compliance with plans and specications on public works projects. Performs eld and laboratory physical tests and limited chemical tests on street, highway, and building materials analyzing material failures to determine cause and recommend corrective action; prepares technical reports.

Duties:
Responsible for materials testing of concrete, cement and aggregates in the lab and eld Maintaining and repairing equipment and laboratory apparatus, appropriately storing chemicals, and other materials Catalogue recordings and making them available when requested Ensure that all health and safety procedures are understood and followed

SKILLs:
Strong practical and organizational skills able to follow written or oral directions communicating information in an organized manner A good scientic and technical background Perform basic material testing computations, understand eld and laboratory notes

EDUCATION:
Completion of high school is required Experience in the construction industry may be required A diploma in Civil Engineering may be required

OVER THE NEXT 2 DECADES 40% OF NEW JOBS WILL BE IN SKILLED TRADES AND TECHNOLOGIES

SALARY: $31,000 to $51,000

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The program has been designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge in computer aided drafting, computer applications, surveying, laboratory testing (soil, concrete and asphalt), construction estimating, basic structural design in steel, reinforced concrete and timber, design of water distribution and sewage collection systems, geotechnical analysis and foundation design, road and highway analysis and design, construction inspection, project management, and writing technical reports and correspondence.

You can begin by applying for a job directly in the Civil Construction Industry. Once you begin working with a Construction Company or Contractor you will quickly gain the necessary skills needed to advance yourself through in-house, work-as-you-learn training. You can enrol in a University, Community College or a Private Technical School to study and prepare yourself for a Career in Civil Construction. All of this information may be found through our website. You can get started through an apprenticeship program by combining on the job training with technical in-class training gaining experience and increased responsibility. You can work in the industry, get paid and work towards earning credits.
