Handbooks on Biodiversity Information Management This eight volume series, developed for use by decision-makers, mid-career professionals, and interested parties, reviews the issues and processes involved in the management of biodiversity information to support the conservation and sustainable use of living resources. They also provide a framework for the development of national plans and strategies and for meeting reporting obligations of international programmes and conventions. The handbooks may be used as a training resource or, more generally, to support institutions and networks involved in building capacity in information management. Representing three-years work, these handbooks were supported by the EU, UNEP, European Environment Agency, through the United Kingdoms Darwin Initiative for the Survival of Species and published through the generous support of the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Mountain Watch: environmental change & sustainable development in mountains UNEP-WCMC Biodiversity Series 12 This report provides the first map-based overview of environmental change in mountain regions and its implications for sustainable development. New global maps illustrate selected values of mountain ecosystems and many of the pressures that are causing environmental change. A range of case studies illustrate how environmental assessments can inform the sustainable development of mountain regions. Mountain environments cover 27 per cent of the earths land surface and directly support 22 percent of the people who live within them. Lowland people also depend on mountain environments for a wide range of goods and services, for example, water, energy, timber, biodiversity maintenance and opportunities for recreation and spiritual renewal. Mountain people face an environment where everyday physical demands are great, natural hazards are significant, and agricultural production is constrained.

Biodiversity in Central and Eastern Europe CDROM The information on the state of biodiversity from 22 Central and Eastern European and former Soviet countries was assembled on the occasion of the 5th Conference of Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Nairobi May 15-26, 2000. It is a collaborative effort of the ENRIN national focal points of UNEP-GRID. UNEP/GRID-Arendal is implementing its Environment and Natural Resources Information Network (ENRIN) programme in Central and Eastern Europe and the NIS. It provides interesting facts about threats and dangers for the diversity of plants and animals and what measures the individual countries have taken to avoid further loss of biodiversity. Biodiversity in Central and Eastern Europe contains regional thematic maps and graphics, country status reports on biodiversity in Russian and English, documents related to the regional implementation processes of the Convention on Biodiversity in Europe, national strategies and first national reports to the convention.

Environmental Problems Affecting the Traditional Lifestyles of Indigenous Peoples in the Russian North (bilingual English/Russian) This report, in English and Russian, provides an eye-opening insight into the plight of indigenous peoples in Northern Russia. Indigenous leaders call for the implementation of legislation, and international help, to protect the rights and interests of their people. A lack of action could be disastrous as many of these groups teeter on the brink of extinction. Leaders called for more information on the damage already inflicted on land and water through activities associated with nuclear power generation, and the exploitation of natural resources.

World Atlas of Biodiversity: Earths Living Resources in the 21st century The Mesopotamian Marshlands: Demise of an Ecosystem The Mesopotamian marshlands (Tigris-Euphrates river delta) are part of a major international river system and the largest river system in southwest Asia. This report covers a devastating account embodying many respects of environmental crises. This study reviews disputes over water rights; pollution; threats to indigenous communities and to archaeological sites; human rights, environmental refugees and war damages; and declining populations of migratory birds and coastal fisheries. The findings of the study also identify technical tools required to man transboundary water resources and develop restoration plans to revitalize degraded ecosystems.

This atlas addresses the remarkable growth in concern at all levels for living things and the environment, and increased appreciation of the links between the state of ecosystems and the state of humankind. building on a wealth of research and analysis by the conservation community worldwide, this book provides a comprehensive and accessible view of key global issues in biodiversity. It outlines some of the broad ecological relationships between humans and the rest of the material world and summarizes information on the health of the planet.

2003 UN List of Protected Areas The 2003 United Nations List of Protected Areas, the thirteenth produced since 1962, records the global communitys endeavour to conserve the Earths natural places. This is the first version to attempt a comprehensive presentation of all the worlds known protected areas, listing 102,102 sites covering 18.8 million km2 compared to just over 1,000 protected areas in 1962. Significant progress has been made in conserving representative areas of the worlds terrestrial biomes, although some including Lake Systems and Temperate Grasslands, remain under-represented. It is an essential reference document for all who want to understand the progress made in responding to the challenges of biodiversity loss and other environmental threats around the world. The UN List is produced through a partnership between IUCN, the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), UNEP and the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre. While the UN, IUCN and the Commission have been working in partnership for the past 44 years it is pleasing to see the valuable contributory role of more recent partners in the process, including the European Environment Agency, the ASEAN Regional Centre for Biodiversity Conservation, and the numerous organisations comprising the World Database on Protected Areas Consortium.

BAMBOO Biodiversity Africa, Madagascar and the Americas The second booklet in the bamboo series. The study, produced by INBAR (International Network for Bamboo and Rattan) and UNEP-WCMC, is the most comprehensive ever undertaken on the subject and uses novel analyses to combine data on the distributions of bamboo species and on existing forest cover. It shows that many bamboo species, including relatives of those cultivated commercially, have tiny amounts of forest remaining within their native ranges.

Protected Areas and Biodiversity An Overview of Key Issues Protected areas cover almost 12 per cent of the Earths land surface and constitute one of the largest conscious changes of land use in history. However, protected areas have to compete for limited financial resources in the allocation of national budgets. Nevertheless, the key environmental services that are provided by protected areas underpin many aspects of sustainable development.
