Introduction

Hong Kong International Model United Nations

HKIMUN intends to provide delegates with:

1. an opportunity to experience a simulated conference of the United Nations;
2. a platform for discussions on global issues;
3. an environment in which public-speaking, lobbying, debating and diplomatic skills are polished;
4. an occasion for cultural exchange and mutual understanding between delegates.

Before adopting their ambassadorial roles, delegates are required to research into and resolve
particular global issues drawn from today's headlines. This would further enhance delegates’ insight
into how the international community acts on its concerns about peace and security, human rights,
food and hunger, economic development, globalization and more.

HKIMUN was first held in 2002 and HKIMUN 2006 marks our fifth year. With both local and
international participation, it is hoped that more students will have the chance to go through this
remarkable and intellectually stimulating learning experience.

Model United Nations

Model United Nations (MUN) is an authentic simulation of the United Nations General Assembly
and other multilateral bodies of the United Nations. Assembled in an auditorium and dressed in
formal business attire, students assume the role of diplomats of their representing countries and
negotiate on international issues. Students, known as delegates in MUN, prepare position papers
prior to conferences to learn about each other’s stance regarding the topic of discussion. This further
assists the drafting of resolutions during conferences. In an assertive yet amiable
atmosphere, delegates seek supporters to negotiate with adversaries in hope of passing resolutions to
deal with the issues discussed.

MUN differs from a formal debate in the sense that “international cooperation” is strongly
emphasized in the discussion instead of promoting individualism. Through the MUN experience,
students not only have an increased international awareness of foreign policies and aspirations of
countries, but also benefit greatly through benevolent interactions with others.

Organizers

This year’s Hong Kong International Model United Nations (HKIMUN) is jointly organized by the
Hong Kong International Model United Nations Association (HKIMUNA) and the Centre for
University and School Partnership (CUSP), the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
HKIMUNA was established in 2004, 2 years after the first HKIMUN conference in Hong Kong. The
Association aims to promote simulated United Nations conferences for students in Hong Kong. With
the cooperation and assistance from various associations and organizations, foreign students are
invited to join HKIMUN. In HKIMUN 2005, there were about 300 participants with 50 non-local
participants from England, Philippines, Mainland China, Thailand and the United States of America.
The Association does not hesitate to cooperate or assist other associations, organizations or clubs in
the promotion or organizing of activities central to its aim: to enable diverse international
understanding and cultural exchange through research and discussions related to local and
international issues.

CUSP was established in 1998 under the Chinese University of Hong Kong with the rationale of
enhancing the cooperation among kindergartens, primary and secondary local schools to augment
the quality of education in Hong Kong. To date, CUSP has cooperated with over 150 primary and
secondary schools, assisting the efficiency and effectiveness of their education programs. CUSP
also conducts surveys, organizes discussion groups and exhibitions, issues publications and
cooperates with other voluntary organizations to achieve its objective.

HKIMUNA and CUSP hold the common aspiration of encouraging and advancing all forms of
educational cultivation. The co-organization of HKIMUN 2006 thus seeks the possibility of bringing
tailored simulated platforms of discussion into local classrooms of Hong Kong. It is hoped that this
act of cooperation would stimulate the sensitivity of students at all levels to local and international
issues.

Committees

A total of four Committees of the United Nations will be held simultaneously, namely:
(i) Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC);
(ii) Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM);
(iii) Human Rights Council (HRC); and
(iv) United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

This year, non-governmental organizations will also be involved in the assembly sessions of the
four different Committees. Moreover, “Outstanding Delegation” and “Honorable Mention” awards
will be presented to delegates in each Committee whose performance is either outstanding or deserve
honorable mention in recognition of their enthusiasm and contribution to the conference.
Delegates

The total number of delegates will be 300 with approximately 250 local students and 50 non-local
students. Senior form students are preferred from local schools. Each school could send a team of 4
students to join the event. They will then be divided into groups of two to attend meetings of two
different Committees.

Delegates should be proficient and confident in their written and spoken English, respectable and
enthusiastic to share their experiences with others. Not only should students show interest in politics
and global issues, but they should also hold the belief that world peace could be pursued through
mutual understanding and cooperation.

In the conference, it is essential for delegates to think in different perspectives, apply their wisdom
and act on the best interest of their representing countries. Delegates, by exerting their best effort and
collaborating with each other in good faith, will be a part of the arena of global compromise,
negotiation and conflict resolution.

We look forward to meeting capable individuals who are prepared to undertake this challenging and
intellectually stimulating experience.
