VAYU TATTWA (MAIN DOOR)

The importance of Vayu we all know. Water is required for beginning of life and Vayu is required to
maintain life. All life forms require air for breathing.Vayu se aayu. The air which we breath in, is called Pran
Vayu in our Vedas.
Vayu is purifying. It is a mixture of Sattwa and Rajas which means Purity with movement.

WHY IT IS PLACED IN N W
a) If we refer to sun clock, N:W is the junction point of hot and cold zones. At night the cooling of
atmosphere is done by cold air.

b) The planetary lord of N W is moon which is a Sattvik planet but fastest moving and changes form
everyday . Vayu too has the same qualities.

c) The movement of Vayu is dependent on Agni & Agni is dependent on Vayu. Both lie diagonally opposite &
are friends to each other. The other two friendly elements Prithvi & Jal lie on N : E::S:W axis.

MAIN DOOR

IMPORTANCE OF MAIN DOOR Or MAIN ENTRY

The main door or main entry is one of the most important factors influencing the energy of the building
and it’s residents. The main door is called face of the building and as the face represents the personality of
a person, the main door represents the personality of the building. The air ( vayu ) can enter from othr doors
and windows but the air entering through the main door is the most important. As we breathe through our
nosesituated on the face, the building breathes through the main door. Therefore we see that the Pran Vayu
for the building enters through the main door. As Pran Vayu is needed to maintain the body, the Pran Vayu
entering through the main door helps to maintain the whole building. We have read slogans “ Vayu se Ayu “ ,
meaning Purer the Air, Longer ( & healthier ) the Life. The same thing applies to the Pran Vayu entering the
building.
In Feng-Shui this Pran Vayu is called CHI, which means positive energy. Feng-Shui ffollowers give lot
of importance to Chi because the Chi enters through the main door. The main door is given lot lot more
importance in Feng-Shui. The Flying Star System of feng- shui is entirely dependent on the degree wise
location of the main door. Another system of entry Bagua divides the nine zones according to the direction
of the main-door.
Main door or main entry decides the energetics of the building, therefore it is one of the most
important factors in the Vastu Analysis. The Main Door being so important , a whole discussion is devoted to
study it. We will be studying the Main Door under different headings.

1
MAIDOOR
The study of main door will consider the following : Definition, Opening, Location, Level, Shape & Size,
Materials Used, Obstructions and Décor.
Definition: The main door is the door which is most frequently used door to go in and out of the house, and
which we lock at night or day for the security of the house. There is a difference between main gate & main
door in large houses. The wire mesh door is also not to be considered the main door. If we deeply consider
the definition given above, main gate and mesh door are automatically excluded.
The main gate is the place where you just communicate with the outsiders like a postman, a
newspaper or vegetable vendor. You dispose them off right at the main gate. You may lock the main gate at
night but there is no guaranty that somebody wouldn’t jump over it to take away something. You may
welcome your guests right at the main gate sometimes but the people known to you would open the main
gate themselves and ring the call bell at your main door. Now the question may arise where is the main gate
of a flat? The gate of the block of flats ( Group Housing ) will be considered as the main gate. For all over
impact we note the facing direction of the main gate.
If the distance between the main gate and the main door is large as is the case in big houses, the
way from the main gate to the main door should be well demarcated. The new visitor should have no
confusion in locating the main door. As we already know that the Pran Vayu or Chi enters through the main
door, this too will get confused as to from where to enter. We consider Pran Vayu as a living being. We can
use various methods to make this demarcation according to the practical situation. Few suggestions are ;
laying a brick or stone path from the main gate to the main door, planting a hedge or placing planters
between the main gate and the main door.
How do we make this demarcation in case of group housing flats ? In this case prominent
numbering of the flats will be a good proposition.
Opening: The main door of a building should always open inside, whether it is a single or a double panel
door. If it is a single panel door which is case in ninety percent of the houses, it should open inside & to the
right when entering the house.
There should be no noise while opening the main door. It applies to all the doors in the house but
particularly to the main door. A noisy main door leads to quarrels and arguments in the house. Dwar me
cheen cheen to ghar me cheen cheen ‘.
On opening the main door 70 to 80 % of the property should be visible. It does not mean that the
inner rooms should not have doors or if they have doors they should kept open. This means that 70-80% of
the area you have is visible. Even if doors are closed or away from direct vision, one should be able to say
that two rooms are there on right one on the left and this is the drawing room.
When one opens the main door one should not face a mirror; blank wall; toilet; store; staircase;
kitchen; dustbin; jharu etc. if one of these things is already there, they should be blocked from direct view. A

2
mirror facing the main door should be covered ; put a beautiful poster on the blank wall ; keep the door of a
toilet or a store closed & decorated with a poster. The best way out is of course to remove them.
Location: Now let us see ideally where should we have the main door or the main entry. The north and the
east are considered to be relatively positive directions. Ideally main door should be located on the north or
east side so that it faces a relatively positive direction. By saying relatively it is only meant that north & east
are more positive when compared with south & west. It does not mean that south and west are absolutely
negative and to be avoided always. On an average 50 % people in a locality will have north or east facing
entry and another 50% will have south or west facing entry. A main door facing north or east will bring good
results to all the categories of people where as south or west facing entry will be favorable to limited number
of people depending on their occupation / profession.
There are various methods to decide the position or location of the main door. In almost all the
methods the boundary wall is first divided into nine divisions. According to classical reference books like
Maymatam, Mansar etc. the location of the main door is at positions occupied by certain mythological gods
sitting on the vastu purush. Referring to the diagram we see that on the East it is at the position occupied by
Jayant, Indra and Surya. On the South it is at position of Gandharva, Yama and Brihtakshat. On the West it
is at Varun, Pushpdant and Sugreev. On the North it is at Som and Bhallat.
Another rather simplified system is that after dividing the periphery we write Sun in the N:W and
S:E division. Starting from Sun we write the next eight planets in sequence according to their lordship on
weekdays : eighth planet being Rahu & the ninth Ketu. For example on the north side on right of Sun we
write Moon then Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and ketu in the last square. On the west we
write Moon below the Sun then Mars & so on. On the south we write Moon on the left of Sun & other planets
in the same sequence. On the east we write Moon above Sun & other seven planets. In this system the
locations occupied by Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are ideal for the main door. The location of the main door
decided by this system exactly matches the classical advice on three sides ; they are west, south and east.
Only Jupiter’s place matches with the classical advice. Here again some books recommend the place of
god Bhujag which coincides with the position of Venus as one of the position of the main door.
Another simplified system advises that after dividing the periphery into nine equal parts , leave five
divisions on the left and three on the right ( while one is looking outside the property ) and place the main
door on the sixth square counting from the left.
The advice by Mansar has gone further than this which says that the main door can be
constructed at the left of the midline. For example if the length of the plot is say 28 feet on which main door
is to be constructed, mark a point at 14 feet and place the main door to the left of this point again
while looking outside the property.

Level : The level of the main door should be higher than the road or street level. It is better to have one or
two symmetrical steps to reach the level of the main door. For architectural reasons also the level of the
3
main door and the building should be higher than the road level. It prohibits the entry of any water flowing on
the road into the house and at least restricts the entry of insects etc. This has got a very practical application
in unauthorized colonies where road level keeps going up every few years.

SHAPE & SIZE

The only shape recommended for the main door is rectangular shape. No other shape is allowed. If you or
your architect has a fancy for arched doorways, let the arch be there but keep the door rectangular by
putting a horizontal beam below the arch. An arch looks like a half cut coin indicating cutting of money.
Another fact is that circles are unstable shapes.
The main door should be solid without any openings. It should not bent in any direction.
The size of the main door can be in any proportion according to convenience at the practical level. The
classical advice about the size of the main door is that, the proportion between length & breadth should be
1: 2 or 3: 7. the most important about the size of the main door is that it should be the largest door in the
building. Ideally there should be no door above the main door. If you must have a door above the main door
on the first floor, then the size of the door above should be smaller in length than the main door. For
example if the main door is 7 ft. in length the door above should be a couple of inches less than 7 ft.
MATERIALS USED
Ideally only New wood should be used to make the main door. Classical recommendation is to use Sagwan,
Devdar, Neem, Sheesham, etc. These days it may not possible. We can use any wood or even a wood
board, but it should be of good quality meaning it should be insect & moisture resistant. Aluminum doors
with a glass panel are quite common nowadays particularly in commercial places. Going by present times,
we can have glass doors but the glass should be tinted if possible. The main door is meant for security as
well as privacy of the occupants.
DÉCOR
The main door should be well decorated. The main door being the face of the house naturally means that it
should be given proper care , maintenance and beautification. It should be well painted. The color of the
main door can be according to the direction. For example green in north, yellow in east and so on.
Auspicious symbols like OM, SWASTIK, HOLY CROSS, EK OMKAR, PANCHANGUL, KALASH etc.
A sign of swastika made above the main door, which is six inches long & six inches wide can remove many
vastu faults in the property. It should ideally be drawn with sindoor, otherwise with red color.
DON’TS FOR DECORATION
It is not advisable to have negative or horror figures on the main door or on front of the building as is quite
common. These horror figures are supposed to repel negative energies or ‘ Nazar” . In vastu we should
always use positive things to overcome negativity. Positive signs are enough powerful to repel negative
forces. Secondly negative signs can sometimes attract negativity into the house.

4
OBSTRUCTIONS OR DWAR VEDH
Vedh basically means blockage or obstacle. As we have already stated that Pran Vayu enters through the
main door, anything which obstructs, blocks or disturbs this pran vayu is called a Dwar Vedh. The following
are considered as Dwar Vedh :---
• A T JUNCTION
• CORNER OF ANOTHER BUILDING
• TEMPLE
• GRAVEYARD OR A CREMATION GROUND
• NEIGHBOR’S DOOR EXACTLY FACING THE MAIN DOOR
• ANY DEAD TREE OR CACTUS
• WELL IN FRONT
• STAGNANT WATER
• DUST BIN
• DIRTY WATER DRAIN
• NARROW MAIN ENTRY
• A BIG TREE OR A POLE
A tree or a pole will constitute a dwar vedh only if it's shadow falls on the main door between 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. This is possible if entry is in the north or east. The shadows are very sharp between 9 a.m. & 3 p.m.
All these vedhas do not form a vedha if the distance between them and the building is more than double the
height of the building. Suppose building’s height is 20 ft , if the vedh is at more than 40 ft away from the
building, it will not constitute a dwar vedh. Another thing mentioned in classical texts is that if there is Raj
Marg between the building and the vedh , it will not have any affect. In a big city any main road with flowing
traffic qualifies as a Raj Marg.
