echnology, music and food, it’sdifficult to find commonground among these domains.But exist it does, in the form of Vijay Fernando. Following a stint inthe US with Yahoo, Vijay returned toIndia when Yahoo set up shop here.Five years later, his two passionsfought for his attention. Food for thesoul won, and that resulted inHummaa.com, a music site, whichboasts of an exhaustive repository of Indian music content and a thrivingcommunity. But the affection for foodmade another bid for prominence,and this time, was successful in get-ting its way. Thus was born BiryaniPundits, in Koramangala, just over amonth ago.
Starters:
The menu doesn’t have astarter section, but there are more thanenough items in the ‘Fry’ ‘Tandoori’,and ‘Daily Specials’ section that canserve the purpose quite well. In fact,with Quail 65, Prawn Sukka, Crab Soup,Fish Cutlets etc listed among the day’sspecials, there was much lip smacking.Unfortunately, none of the items inthat section were available, and that leftabout a dozen ‘Fry’ and a few Tandoorioptions. The Chicken 65 was the pickof the starters, boneless, succulent andquite spicy thanks to the chilli paste.The Lamb Liver Fry was just a shade be-low, and though the masala couldn’t betermed spicy, it had a flavourful zing toit, helped by the green chillies. The Pun-dits Special Chicken just about passedmuster with a masala that seemed to bea ‘ghee roast’ wannabe, but without theghee or the texture. The Paneer Chillyturned out to be a disappointment andthe least spicy, with the paneer in aguest appearance and corn flour andcapsicums hogging the limelight.Though the chicken was tender, theChicken Tikka Boneless was quitebland, despite peppery attempts.
Main Course:
The Chicken WheatParotta Koththu is quite famous as astreet food and Biryani Pundits does agood job with it, not being stingy withthe chicken, and with a slightly spicyand consistent masala featuring gin-ger garlic, chilli and turmeric flavours.The lamb version was not so fortunatewith the masala, as some portionswere too salty. But here too, it needs tobe mentioned that there was an ampleproportion of meat. One of the drawbacks of an enthu-siastic service was that they brought theentire set of dishes at the sametime, despite the order hav-ing things like appams ,wheat parottas andbiriyani, which reallyneed to be served hot.I expected the egg ap-pam to have an un-broken yolk, but thatwas not to be. Howev-er, it did a good job oth-erwise, making a goodcombination with the LambCurry , which was the only itemthat redeemed the main course. Themeat was tender and juicy and thegravy, while not overly spicy, had a pi-quancy about it that made it a favourite.The Chicken Pepper Masala was alsoquite a dud, with no sign of the pepper.The Wheat Kerala Parotta obvious-ly lacks the fluffiness of its maida coun-terpart, but is still a safe bet. The samecan’t be said of the Veg Lababdar,which somehow tasted all wrong. Anextremely dominant tangy flavourmade the dish quite unpalatable.Much was expected from the Special dosa, priced higher than theegg appam, but it was just a roast dosa, which could barely hold on to itscrispiness. But the biggest disap-pointment was the PunditsSpecial Chicken Biriyani,special because it usedkababs, but themasala made only afleeting appear-ance. Also mildly irri-tating was having toask for the raita andthe brinjal chutneythat were supposed to begiven along with the dish.And when they did appear, it did-n’t make much of a difference either. The other disappointing aspect wasthe non-availability of dishes. To fea-ture items like ‘Lamb Head Masala’ and‘Quail Biriyani’ on the menu and nothave it is gross injustice, and enough toconvert carnivores into cannibals.
Desserts:
The menu does not have adedicated section, and our only hopewas the ‘traditional sweet’ promisedwith the biriyani. That turned out tobe another item we had to ask for, andwhen it did arrive, the jamun was atad too sweet and syrupy.
In a nutshell:
For a restaurant that hasBiriyani in its name, Biryani Punditshave quite a way to go before theiroffering delivers some dum. Some of their dishes are quite good, but theunavailability of items doesn’t reallyhelp their cause.

IT IS no secret that the advent of wireless technology, combined with increasinglyhectic work, school and extracurricularschedules, is leading to less quality timebetween parents and children. Kelly Warzinik, extension associate in theCollege of Human Environmental Sciences,said that instead of watching TV or talking on a cellphone, parents could take advan- tage of daily opportunities to interact with their children at meal times or in the car. Additionally, she also noted that parentsshould not overschedule themselves or their children to ensure that everyone has time to connect. “Husbands and wives who are working and raising kids may need to be even moreintentional about nurturing their relation-ship as a couple,” Warzinik said. “Touch base throughout the day by calling,emailing or texting, and after children areasleep, put down the iPhone, turn off theTV and focus on each other,” she added. In addition to strengthening family con-nections, turning off time-consuming de-vices leads to better health, according toSaralee Jamieson, human developmentspecialist and Extension program directorin St Clair County. She says people who devote more time todigital technology are less likely to makehealthy food choices.

FOODS THATare rich in protein – eggs,meat and fish for example – are more fill-ing and hence curb overeating, Australianresearchers say. Researchers from the University of Syd-ney, Australia, tested three diets on 22male and female participants. All three diets were modified to contain10, 15 or 25 per cent protein. Each subjectspent four days on each one. Researchers found that participants felthungrier after the 10 per cent protein dietin the two hours following breakfast than they were on both higher-protein diets. Volunteers also gave in to the urge tosnack more after indulging in the diet with the least protein. From the first day to the last, participantsate a 12 per cent greater volume of foodoverall on this diet. “When protein in the diet is diluted by ex- tra fat and carbohydrate, even by a smallamount – something that has happenedover recent decades in westernised coun- tries – we keep eating in an attempt to at- tain our target level of protein,”
