Cultural Topic: Family

A family as defined by the web dictionary on Goggle is, A group consisting of parents and children living together in a household. However, the most concise definition of a family is, a caregiving unit which might consist of a couple; a mother, father and children; a single parent and child; grandparent and grandchildren; a sibling group; a circle of friends; or however that family defines itself. In addition, most people would define family in two types; The Immediate family (which is also called the nuclear family) and extended family. The immediate family usually includes the father and mother, and their children. The extended family includes the grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and second cousins. They dont necessarily have to be biologically related, even though in most cases, family members are related. In some cases where mothers cant give birth, they adopt children. Families are the foundation of society. This is where we human beings learn, are nurtured, and grow. Here we learn from the very basics on how to crawl, to how to learn manners, and how to live in the real world. Families are so important in culture, because it is that environment that defines our traditions and customs. Across the globe, many families create and share their own traditions such as, Christmas stockings, Christmas caroling, Easter egg hunts, barbecues, camping trips, among many other traditions. Families influence our behaviors and it also influences decisions made within communities. It influences our decisions of where to live and how to live. They are a positive influence in the lives of many people regardless of where theyre from, because many see families as the center and purpose of their lives.

Many issues have affected families and continue to threaten what many see as the foundation of society. The biggest threat is divorce. Divorce rates are increasing in most countries to almost 50%. The second biggest threat is one single parents, abandoned by their spouse. This trend is affecting many people, as many children are growing up with just one parent in the home. This affects many as, when families break down and fail to provide the healthy nurturing we need In the long run, it impacts not only our own lives, but also our communities. Among some of the other issues affecting families are government imposed laws such as the one child policy in china, and the same sex marriage laws. Abuse and violence in families is another terrifying issue that affects many families, especially children. To close, many people from different cultures take pride in their families. As an example of what they do, many will create family crest, which describes the family, and others will do gynecology work to discover their background and where they came from. In conclusion, there is a saying that blood is thicker than water, and that saying refers to the strong ties that are involved in families. It states that families are more important and stronger than anything else. For me personally, my family defines who I am, because it was my family that taught me principles, values, morals, manners, discipline, and many other things that define my personality and my purpose in life. Family as said by President Henry B. Eyring, an apostle of the church of Christ of the latter-day saints, is fundamental not only to society and to the church but also to our hope for eternal life.
