Computers in our Society

The computer has changed society today as much as the industrial revolution changed society in 19th and 20th centuries. People interact directly with computers in the field of education, finance, government, health care, science, publishing, traveling and manufacturing.

Home
Computers assist small business and home users (SOHO) in managing their resources effectively. SOHO users often work with basic application software such as word processing, spreadsheets that assist with documents preparation and finances. Electronic mail (E-mail) is the most popular use for home computers; it allows people to communicate with another. It is possible for many users to connect to their employers network do work from their homes.

Education
Today students and educators are turning to computers to assist with education. Many schools and institutes equip labs and class rooms with computers. More and more schools are adding computer technology to their curricula. Basic computing skills such as typing are being taught in elementary school classes.

Industry
Computers are used in manufacturing processes such as fabrication and assembly. Industries use Computer-Aid-Manufacturing (CAM) to reduce product development costs and shorten a products time to market. Often robots carry out process in a CAM environment. CAM is used in a variety of industries, including oil drilling, power generation, food production and automobile manufacturing.

Government
A government is a big consumer of technology. To provide citizens with up-todate information, most government offices have Web sites. Employees of government agencies use computers as part of their daily routine.

Health care
Nearly every area of health care today uses computers. Hospitals and doctors use computers to maintain and access patient records. Health care professionals in separate locations conduct live conferences on the computers. For example, a doctor at one location can have a conference with a doctor at another location to discuss a bone X-ray. Live images of each doctor, along with the X-ray, are displayed on each doctors computer. Surgeons use computer controlled devices to provide them greater precision during operations.

Science
All branches of science, from biology to astronomy use computers to assist them with collecting, analyzing and modeling data. Breakthroughs in surgery, medicine and treatments often results from scientists use of computers.
