Some conditions factory workers faced in the 19th century were things like a dem anding seven day

workweek, Often working for more than 12 hours, atleast six days a week. You weren't aloud to ha ve a vacation, sick leave, unemployment, or reimbursement for your injuries. Injuries still happend often with dangorous and faulty machines. Life literally was miserable for workers.

Labor Unions spoke for workers rights, For things such a legal 8 hour work day, equal pay for work, and no more child labour. The knights of labours also fought for womens rights. They went on strik es to get all of these results.Socialism emerged from these ideas because people thought the government should regulate a nd own certain industries. Some unions that emerged were The national Labor Union, Which was formed by an i ron worker named Willam H Sylvis. Another union was the noble order of the knights of labor which was formed by Ur iah Steohens. The american Railway union which was formed by Eugene V Debs which supported unskilled and skilled workers. The last major union was The Industrial Workers of the World. or IWW, It was headed by Bill Bill Haywood. Thi s was a group of radicalsts and socialist.

Major strikes happend becuase of big wage cuts. They held up railroads, Threw bo mbs, they gathered at Chicago's Haymarket Square to protest police brutality. Strikers had been killed and seven had been wounded

Scab is a term invented by labor movements to describe non union workers who acc ept jobs with businesses who've ceased negotiating with unions. When unions go on strike and refuse to work because of breakdown in contract neg otiations those people who "cross the picket" line to work are known as scabs and amongst unions and labor movements these people are not at all popular. The man who accepted a job because a union employee refuses to work, so that man might provide for his family is not unpopular with his family. It is doubtful he is unpopular with his friends and neighbors, he is just unpopu lar with labor movements."

Pullman illinois was a company town where george pullman wouldnt let people buy property only rent he also owned the schools,post office, and the library. The town pullman was a community setup and owned by goerge mortimer pullman, whose pullman palace car company manufactured luxuary railroad cars for the major rail lines in this company town pullman did not let his workers buy their residences-they c ould only rent. Managment started to forbide union meetings, fired union workers, and forced new employees to sign yellow dog contracts, swearing they wouldnt join a union. This caused outrages and unions like the afl had grown to a high of 2 million workers just before world war one.
