Organizational Behavior Discussion Question 1 Should Business be concerned about sustainability? Why or why not?

Business should be concerned about sustainability because over the past few decades it has been proven that various businesses around the world have contributed to the ecological decline of the environment. Business operations have had a negative impact on the natural environment. Sustainability of the environment dates back as far as the 16 th century, so it was well known back then that the actions of man could harm the environment. If business does not show concern about sustainability then the environments in which they operate in will become useless, particularly in the mining industry. Business should not only be concerned about sustainability of the environment but of other aspects as well. Such aspects could be; children, staff, health, finances and animals. All of these things mentioned are important to business, whether it be present or future business operations. Business should be concerned about the sustainability of children and their health because they are the future of every business. If children are left unhealthy and uneducated they cannot help in making a business move forward in the future. Sustainability of animals should also be a major concern for business, most notably agricultural organizations. This is because animals, including vegetables, are the main source of income for these types of organizations. Without them they will fall apart. Business should also be concerned about the sustainability of the natural environment, because nature serves the purpose of supporting business needs. Nature is required for the survival of not only business but human beings as well. Science and technology can be used by business to try and sustain the natural environment. Businesses which affect the environment directly such as BP and Shell should have a high concern for sustainability. Smaller businesses which do not really affect the environment may have a lower concern for sustainability, but it would be preferable for the society if they were concerned with what was going on around them. Cultural, ethical, political, social and economic aspects of businesses must also be sustained. If businesses do not sustain their beliefs and morals then chaos would occur within the workplace. Overall businesses should definitely be concerned about sustainability due to the highly positive impact it would have on both their operations and the society.
