The News of Grace

Volume 34, no. 10 October 2011

who provided leadership and reminded the people that they were the Church. He told them that they need not give up and return to the Old World because they had no bishop. It was Dr. Walther who was instrumental in gathering together like-minded confessional Lutherans from across the country and through those meetings establishing in 1847 what we call today The Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod. He was elected the first president of this new national Synod, serving from 1847 to 1850 and then again from 1864 to 1878. At the same time he was Pastor of Trinity St. Louis, leading that congregation and an association of other Lutheran congregations in St. Louis. In addition he served as professor and president of Concordia Seminary which had moved to St. Louis from Altenburg, Missouri in 1847. He served as president from 1854 until his death in 1887. The monthly periodical The Lutheran Witness that we receive in our homes today was the English language counterpart of Walthers Der Lutheraner which he published for the purpose of sharing Gods Word and the Lutheran doctrine drawn from that Word. He was indeed a busy man. Dr. Walthers influence continues today through the pastors who are trained by our church for service in the congregations of the Missouri Synod. His classic work Law and Gospel, a collection of his lectures on the proper distinction between these two chief doctrines of Scripture, is a foundational theological work for preaching and the application of Gods Word amongst Gods people by their pastor. It is through that lens that we understand our salvation. It was another doctor of the church, Dr. Martin Luther, who from Holy Scripture rediscovered that the righteousness of God which is demanded of us (Law) is something that God freely gives to us (Gospel). In the above verse from St. Pauls letter to the Romans we see both Law and Gospel. The Law always condemns, always convicts and always kills. The wages of sin is death. But the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. That is the Good News for us poor, miserable sinners. We are given by God what He commands us to be. This is foundational to the very message of Holy Scripture. This is foundational to a proper understanding of how our good and gracious God chooses to deal with us. Yearly we remember how the Lord used Martin Luther to be a servant of the Word. This year we celebrate how the Lord also used Carl Ferdinand Wilhelm Walther in the same way. Pastor Walter

LAW AND GOSPEL

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23) October is a special month for us Lutherans. We celebrate the Festival of the Reformation on the Sunday which is on or before October 31st. Of course our children can also dress up that day and observe Halloween, also known as All Hallows Eve. I dont usually have anyone show up at my front door on the 31st dressed like an Augustinian monk however. But that may give someone an idea for this years costume. Make sure you include a long list of grievances (95 theses) and a wooden mallet as part of the costume. Then be prepared to give an explanation about your costume. I am reminded of our joint involvement with Mount Saint Mary to widen Hillcrest and provide street lighting back in 1998-99. Sister Deborah would ask me if I wanted her to have some of the documents we were working on signed and then nailed to our door. This year October 25th, which is the 58th anniversary of my Baptism, is also the 200th anniversary of the birth of C.F.W. Walther. Who? Carl Ferdinand Wilhelm Walther, thats who. Have you ever heard of him? If you are my age and older and have grown up in the church you were probably a card carrying, dues paying member of the Walther League. That is what the youth groups of Missouri Synod congregations were called until we attempted to be like other denominations and just settled on calling that group, Lutheran Youth Fellowship. Dr. Walther was an important figure in the life of our church body. He was part of the Saxon immigration which came to the United States fleeing the rationalism and unionism found in the German churches of the early nineteenth century. Walther was not the organizer of the 1839 immigration, but he was instrumental in calming the fears of the people who had left the old world behind in search of religious freedom and a new life in a new land. When the leader of this group of Lutherans was removed from his office, it was a young Pastor Walther

Director of Parish Music

Greetings in the name of our Risen Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. The new music season is well underway here at Grace. The Childrens Choir has been a hit with participants ranging from Grade One to Grade 8. They have been busy learning the Sanctus and Agnus Dei from Divine Service 1, Thy Strong Word (LSB 578), the First Commandment and meaning from Luthers Small Catechism, as well as a setting of I Am Jesus Little Lamb that they will be presenting along with the Adult Choir and Handbell Choir on October 16th. I am very pleased with the turn-out and I look forward to more singing the Faith as the year moves on. Thank you also to everyone who came to the Organ Recital on September 18th. I really enjoyed playing it and it seemed to be well-received, which is always encouraging. I look forward to doing more recitals in the not-too-distant future. At our Reformation Sunday service this year we will once again be privileged to sing We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God (LSB 941), which is a paraphrase of the Te Deum. This is one of my favorite hymns, and I will leave you with the first stanza as we look forward to that great celebration!
