Ben Davis High School: Day of Social Justice After the Civil War, the United States began

to industrialize rapidly. Tycoons and corporations became very good at expanding business, growing infrastructure and making money. Often this came at the expense of several less powerful groups. We live in a great country. However, these injustices are a black-eye on an otherwise proud history. At the turn of the 20th Century, people like Jane Addams, Upton Sinclair, Booker T. Washington, Alice Paul, Jacob Riis, W.E.B. Du Bois and many more worked to improve the lives of the less fortunate and discriminated against. This period of time came to be known as the Progressive Era or the Progressive Movement. Unfortunately, modern day America still struggles. Women and mothers are still taken advantage of, immigrants still find it difficult to find their way in a new country, the downtrodden still need homes and food, young people find acceptance in violent gangs or addictive drugs, people are discriminate for the lifestyle choices they enter in. Thankfully, there are also modern day activists, journalists and caretakers who support those who are in need. Progressivism still lives 100 years after its first inception. Your objective will be to learn from the progressives of the past to become a modern day progressive yourself in order to answer the question; how can individuals be protected against the injustices of society? You will create an organization that protects the needs, rights, and interests of a vulnerable group of your choice in society. Your organization will detail a plan to protect the interests of your societal perspective. You must 1. List the goals, priorities and interests of your assigned group. 2. Create a mission statement for your organization 3. Create two marketing/advertising pieces that provide information about your organization and who it serves. 4. Describe the relationship between your organization and the Progressive Movement your organization is based off of. a. You will specifically choose an author above or organization you learn about to incorporate into your organizations philosophy. 5. Deliver an organized final presentation promoting their given perspective. Each group will debut its organization at the Ben Davis High School Day of Social Justice, a fair that showcases organizations that work to help those in need locally and regionally. You can right all the wrongs Justice is in your hands. Mr. Kimbley Ms. Hoover Mr. Smith
