With vast low lying areas, Bangladesh is considered as one of the most vulnerable countries in the world due

to climate change. The Khulna city is located in the coastal area of Bangladesh and is influenced by tides from the Bay of Bengal which is highly vulnerable to climate change. Due to climate change flood and water logging problem is emerging in Khulna city. Drainage system of Khulna city mainly is operated by the Moyur River. Beside this there are two rivers Rupsha and Bhairab. The main cause of water logging situation in Khulna city is the siltation of these three rivers and the ousting of Moyur River. If this Moyur River is escaped from the people then the water logging situation can be removed. At present the level of Khulna city is becoming low than the river bed of Bhairab and Rupsha. People are not conscious about the throwing of dirty and garbage in the drains. All the clinical wastes are not thrown in exact place and for that reason solid waste is not managed in proper way. The linked drains are filled with wastes. Level of joint ports are high than the river bed. The ports of drains with big rivers are blocked. As a result all the main drainage system of Khulna city is becoming useless. Drains are filled with water during flood and rain as water cannot pass away easily. In the stakeholder meeting, NGO bodies told that, they can manage or dig the pond but if they want to dig or clear any drain, they need permission from the government authorities. In before there were so many ponds and canals but now it is very less in quantity with fast growing of population in Khulna city. When government raises the level of road, then the area besides roads becomes lower than the road level and in that area water is logged during heavy rain. There is lack of proper coordination among the work of Khulna WASA and KDA authorities. Every authority wants to work according to self intensions and motives. In the stakeholder meeting, some people told that the water logging problem in Khulna city is due to siltation of the main two rivers not for climate change. But in our country the siltation management capacity is very low as there are so many rivers in this country. If we control siltation of rivers in Khulna, then the upstream water flow has to increase. In Maheshwar pasha, after the heavy rainfall the total area becomes water logged but it stills only for two hours and then removed away. It has been happening for 10 years in this area. The participant in the stakeholder meeting said that if we want to reduce the costs and losses due to water logging problem then we have to work with both awareness and preparedness. They also indicated that to manage the water logging situation in Khulna city some techniques have to take before to control

the situation and some steps have to take to manage the situation during flood or water logging. It is not a good solution to pump water from the logged area. Some thought that Khulna city has to extend and people have to reallocate to escape from the water logging problem. Most of the people think that to manage the water logging situation, we have to develop not only hardware but also software. Every work has to do carefully.

Adaptation techniques: 1. People have to more conscious about the solid waste management of Khulna city. They have to throw wastage in the proper place not in the drains and roads. 2. All the dams on the Moyur River have to evict. 3. For the tidal pressure embankment are being damaged so all the prevailed embankments have to repair and new high embankments have to build. 4. Drainage system of Khulna city has to improve and manage with the co-operation of both WASA and KDA authorities. 5. There is no city protection embankment in Khulna city so a new high embankment has to build which will protect the whole city. 6. Water has to pump out from the water logging affected area. 7. Very few people are aware about the water logging situa tion. So to create awareness among people various campaign programs have to arrange. 8. To remove the water logging situation in Khulna city collective activities are required. 9. Master plan of Khulna city has to improve and relocate the areas with new drainage system. 10. All the plan have to correct and with the co-ordination of the general people. 11. All the illegal buildings and infrastructures on the canals and dams have to evict. 12. New buildings have to design according to the water logging situation. 13. Have to conscious about the budget implementation of road construction. 14. Have to consult with the expertise of climate change and water logging situation management authorities. 15. Khulna city has to divide in some areas and groups. Then logged water can be removed easily in area wise.
