EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Title- Organizational Understanding

Organization- Marketing and Research Team (MART), Bhubaneswar
Reporting Officer – Mr. Ashwini Chandak
Faculty Guide – Mr. K.V.Raju
Student’s Name – Diptiranjan Sahoo & Prabhakar Singh

Scope of study: Our study of understanding the organization was confined to the MART
Team in Orissa. It did not encompass the teams working in other states

Objective of the study: The objective of our study was to understand the organization as a
whole and its activities. This study was also aimed at understanding the mission, vision, and
core values of the organization, its history and profile of the Team members in order to
understand the organization in a holistic manner. It was also required to know its current
operation arrangement with its external environment in order to facilitate its operation and
analyze its performance so as to know its strengths and weakness. The study also involved
knowing strategies adopted by the organization to reach its current level of operation and
future strategies in order to survive and grow in the given field.
.
Methodology: The various methodologies adopted for the purpose included semi- structured
interviews with stakeholders, unstructured interviews, observations, informal discussions and
secondary data sources consisting of various documents available in the organization.

Main findings: MART has two distinct subdivisions: One focuses on rural marketing and
other on livelihood promotion. MART, Bhubaneswar is a rural development team,
specializing in livelihood promotion for development agencies. It offers a wide range of
support services to NGOs and DRDAs. It employs a strategic business approach to rural
development projects that is founded in an understanding of micro markets. Its major
activities include formulation and implementation of micro enterprise development plan,
capacity building of stakeholders and creation of market and institutional linkages. In fact
spreading awareness and knowledge on livelihood promotion issues is also an aim of MART
(RDT). It also organizes workshops/seminars on topics such as Micro Enterprise
Development, Business Development Services and Marketing of Rural Products. Its major
clients include CAPART, CARE, UNDP, NABARD, KVIC etc. The underlying ethos of
MART’s approach as and according to the words of Pradeep Kashyap, MD, MART is “a
business mind with a social heart”. For purpose of functional efficiency, MART has a core
team, at its head office in New Delhi supported by regional offices that develops the strategy,
in line with its clients and its own experts in the field. At the field level, operations and
activities are divided into two strategic teams. Each of which operates independently in the
field, under the overall directions of its MD. Though operating independent of each other,
each team has close interaction with the other, to share its experience with projects in the
field, to broaden and enrich its learning experience.
