Lighting
In industrial or commercial environments the use of appropriate
lighting is fundamental to profitable growth: better on-the-job safe-
ty, higher productivity, fewer work errors and rejects. The design
of the “best lighting system” is not only a matter of ensuring quan-
titative aspects that can be easily measured (energy savings, per-
formance, efficiency, etc.), but also respecting important quality
requirements, such as visual comfort andlight appearance.

High bay applications

An application is usually called “high bay” when the mounting
height of the fixtures is between 6 to 30 metres. The fixtures must
be designed for the specific environments, which can have com-
pletely different requirements (e.g. greater mechanical protection
for a foundry with dusty atmosphere vs. the clean food hall of a
supermarket).
The common denominator of all applications is to provide suffi-
cient illumination on work surfaces, while reducing the number of
fixtures installed as much as possible.
To achieve this level of efficiency together with a variety of visual
appearance, it is important to have a wide range of reflectors
offering a large variety of lighting distributions: direct lighting dif-
ferent beams (narrow, medium, large), direct-indirect lighting or
diffused lighting.
Another important factor is the type of environment.
In industrial applications, the air often contains fumes, oil mist,
moisture and dust, which can affect the optical performance of
lighting systems. Furthermore, as fixtures are normally mounted at
considerable heights, they are difficult to reach for maintenance.
In these cases, the fixtures should have an enclosed and sealed
optical assembly, and even more importantly, an activated char-
coal filter to remove airbobe particles and gases before they con-
taminate and deteriorate the reflector.
In environments where the atmosphere is not as aggressive, open
and ventilated fixtures can be used. In these fixtures, the optical
configuration produces a chimney effect that keeps the reflector
surface reasonably clean.

Low bay applications

Applications where the mounting height of the fixtures is below 6
metres are called “low bay”.
Garages, assembly areas, low-ceiling warehouses, shopping areas
or airport terminals are only a few examples of low bay applica-
tions.
The optics used are completely different from those of high bay
applications. In these cases, photometric distribution is made with
a refractor to reach high spacing-to-mounting height
ratios controlling glare and surface brightness.
Glare control is an essential feature in low bay systems
of high intensity discharge lamps. These systems incor-
porate a lamp (sometimes up to 400W), with a very
high output at a low mounting height. In these situa-
tions, the glare control design of the fixtures is crucial.
