ASSIGNMENT 1

1. Data collected on the effect of four fixed types of television tube coating on the conductivity of the tubes are given as:

Coating
I 60 59 62 55 56 II 41 43 45 39 42 III 43 45 46 45 39 IV 56 55 50 61 64

a) Suppose that a complete randomization was applied in this experiment, write a suitable mathematical model to represent the above experiment.

b) Do an analysis of variance on these data and test the hypothesis that the four coatings yield the same average conductivity.

c) Set up suitable contrasts and tests using Scheffes method to answer the following question; do the means of coating I and IV differ? The means of II and IV? The mean of I and IV versus the mean of III and II?

2. Researchers at Purdue University studied 5 electrode shapes A, B, C, D and E to determine metal removal rates. For this experiment, 5 holes were cut in 5 workpieces and the order of electrodes was arranged so that only 1 electrode shape was used in the same position on each of the 5 workpieces. Thus, the design considered was a Latin square design and data are displayed as follows. Based on 1

the obtained data, analyze it and test for an electrode effect, position effect and strip effect. Position
Strip I II III IV V 1 A (64) B (62) C (61) D (63) E (62) 2 B (61) C (62) D (62) E (64) A (61) 3 C (62) D (63) E (63) A (63) B (63) 4 D (62) E (62) A (63) B (63) C (63) 5 E (62) A (63) B (63) C (63) D (62)

3. The object of an experiment is to determine thrust forces in drilling at different speeds and feeds and in different materials. Five speeds and three feeds are used and two materials with two samples are tested under each set of conditions. The order of the experiment is completely randomized and levels of all factors are fixed. Data on thrust forces were recorded as follows. Do a complete analysis of this experiment and state your conclusions.

Speed Material B10 Feed 0.004 100 122 110 0.008 332 330 0.014 640 500 V10 0.004 192 170 0.008 386 365 0.014 810 725 220 108 85 276 310 612 500 136 130 333 330 779 670 475 108 60 248 295 543 450 122 85 318 330 810 750 715 66 50 248 275 612 610 108 75 472 350 893 890 870 80 60 276 310 696 610 136 75 499 390 1820 890

4. In an experiment of the effects of 3 randomly selected operators and 5 fixed aluminizers on the aluminium thickness of a TV tube, two readings are made for each operator-aluminizer combination. The following ANOVA table is compiled. Assuming complete randomization, determine the EMS column for this problem and make the indicated significance tests.

5. Consider a three factor experiment where factor A is at a levels, factor B is at b levels and factor C at c levels. The experiment is to be run in a completely randomized manner with n observations for each treatment condition. Assuming that factor A is run at a random levels and both B and C at fixed levels, determine the EMS column and indicate what tests would be made (i.e. construction of f ratio).

6. Suppose we have four factors involved in an experiment; OPERATOR, ANGLE, CLEARANCES and LOCATION. Based on the following information, construct the required EMS for each term and decide the ratios that one must consider in testing those effects.
