RULES FOR SAFE OPERATION

I f a spark arrester i s used, i t should be maintained i n effective working order by the operator. Never place hands or feet under t h e m o w e r , i n t h e deflector (discharge c h u t e ) or near any moving parts w h i l e tractor or m o w e r are r u n n i n g . M o w only i n daylight or i n good artificial light. b . Shut the englne off w h e n unclogging chute. c. Check the blade m o u n t i n g b o l t s for proper tightness at frequent intervals. 3 6 . D o not operate t h e m o w e r w i t h o u t e ~ t h e the entire grass r catcher, o n m o w e r s so equipped, or t h e deflector shield i n place. 3 7 . Disengage power to mower before backing up. Do not m o w i n reverse unless absolutely necessary a n d t h e n only after careful observation of t h e entire area behind t h e mower. 3 8 . Under n o r m a l usage t h e grass catcher bag material IS subject t o deterioration and wear It should be checked f r e q u e n t l y for bag replacement. Replacement bags should be checked to ensure compliance w ~ t hhe t manufacturer's recommendations or specifications.

LIMITED WARRANTY
Roper Corporation warrants to the origiml consumer purchaser that this product as manufactured is free from defects in materials and workmanship. For a period of two ( 2 ) years from date of purchase by the original consumer purchaser, we will repair or replace, at our option, without charge for parts or labor incurred i n replacing parts, any part which we find to be defective due t o materials or workmanship. This warranty is subject to the following limitations and exclusions: 1. 3. Battery Warranty: On products equipped with a battery, ~ o ~ a r ' w ireplace, without charge to you, ll
any battery which we find to be defective in manufacture during the first year of ownership. Battery must be maintained in accordance with instructions in the product literature. 4. The warranty period for any products used for rental or commercial purposes is limited t o 90 days from the date of original purchase. 5. This warranty applies only t o products which have been properly assembled, adjusted and operated in accordance with instructions found in product literature for your product. This warranty does not apply t o any product which has been subject t o alterations, misuse, abuse, improper assembly, installation, or delivery damages.
6. Exclusions: Excluded from this warranty are belts, blades, blade adapters, normal wear, normal
adjustments, standard hardware, and normal maintenance. 7. a. Take items out of box. The box contains the items shown below. b. Cut down four corners of the carton with a utility knife and fold down sides. c. Disengage Parking Brake. d. lnstall Steering Wheel e. Remove plastic on tractor hood. f. Raise attachment lift handle. g. Roll Tractor off skid. Be careful of staples in skid. The operation of any tractor can result in foreign objects thrown into the eyes, which can result in severe eye damage. Always wear safety glasses or eye shields before starting your tractor and while moving. We recommend Wide Vision Safety Mask for over the spectacles or standard safety glasses.
I. Remove Hex Nut and Washer from Steering Column (Fig. I )

2. POSITION FRONT WHEELS FORWARD, then
position Steering Wheel over Steering Wheel Ada ter with Steering Wheel spokes as shown in rgure I.
3. lnstall Washer over Steering Wheel and secure with Hex Nut. Tighten securely.
4. Snap Steering Wheellnsertinplace on Steering Wheel. SteeringWheel lnsert found in Bag of Parts.

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED WlTH THE BATTERY VENT CAPS IN THE BAG OF PARTS. ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES, CLOTHING AND GOGGLES TO PROTECT YOUR HANDS, SKIN AND EYES.
Prepare Battery 3. Install Seat.

Fill and charge battery (before installing). NOTE: SEE DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS PACKAGED WlTH BATTERY VENT CAPS FOUND IN BAG OF PARTS. a . Fill each cell with battery acid. Add the acid until it reaches the bottom of the vent tubes (Fig. 3). Do not add the acid beyond this level or the additional acid can come out when the battery is charged. b . After cells are filled, tilt battery from side to side t o release air bubbles. c . Allow battery t o stand and settle for at least thirty minutes. If the level of acid falls below the point described in step (a), add more acid until the correct level is reached. lnstall the battery caps, found in the bag of parts, to cover the vent tubes. Wash the top of the battery with water to remove any acid, then wipe dry. d . Check battery case for leakage to make sure that no damage has occured in handling. e . Neutralize excess battery acid for disposal by adding it to four inches of water in a five gallon plastic container. Stir with a wooden or plastic paddle while adding baking soda until the addition of more soda causes no more foaming. f . It is recommended that the battery be charged before use. Use a 72 volt battery charger. Charge battery at a rate of 6 amperes for 1 hour. NOTE: OBSERVE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS, LISTED IN BOX ABOVE, REQUIRED FOR BATTERY CHARGING. Check the acid level after the battery is charged. If the acid has fallen below the correct level, add distilled or iron free water.
Seat position should be adjusted forward or backward so that the operator can comfortably reach Clutch/Brake Pedal and safely operate tractor.
a. Place seat on seat an. Screw Seat Knob, Lockwasher and Flat asher into Seat Fig. 2). Screw Shoulder Bolt into Seat (Fig. ). Seat Knob, Shoulder Bolt and Washers found in Bag of Parts (shown full size on page 6).
b. Ti hten Shoulder Bolt using a 1/2" wrench. N ~ T E THE SHOULDER BOLT WILL BE : LOOSE IN THE SEAT PAN SLOT. c. Tighten Seat Knob, Lockwasherand Flat Washer by hand. d. Place Seat in operating position. Sit on the Seat andpress Clutch/Brakepedal all the way down. If operating position is not comfortable, adjust Seat. e. To adjust: Raise Seat. Loosen Seat Knob. Slide Seat to desired position. Tighten Seat Knob securely.

4. Check Tlres Check the air pressure in the tires. Tires with too much alr pressure will cause the unit to ride rough. The wrong air pressure will also keep the mower from cutting level. The correct airpressure is shown on the side of the tires. If the air pressure is not shown, set to pressures shown in the REPAIR AND ADJUSTMENT section (page 7 4 ) .

BEFORE INSTALLING BATTERY, REMOVE METAL BRACELETS, WRISTWATCH BANDS, RINGS, ETC. FROM YOUR PERSON. TOUCHING THESE ITEMS TO BAlTERY TERMINALS COULD RESULT IN BURNS.

a. Place Battery into Battery Tray with Batter terminals toward rear of Tractor (Fig. 4) Ma e sure Battery rests in Battery tray.

b. Connect RED battery cable to positive (+) battery

terminal with hex bolt, flat washer, lockwasher and hex nut (shown full size on pg. 6) found in bag of parts. Tighten securely with two 7/16" wrenches. (Fig. 4) c . Connect BLACKgroundcable to negative (-)battery terminal with remaning hex bolt, flat washer, lockwasher and hex nut (shown full size on pg. 6) found in bag of parts. Tighten securely. (Fig. 4) d . To prevent wrrosion, apply grease to the battery terminals after installing cables. e . Using the s uare hole on one side of the Battery support, sli e Batter Bolt into frame hole head of Bolt down). Fasten t e Battery Bolt to the erminal Guard using internal/external Lockwasher and Wing Nut (shown full size on page 6) as shown in Fig. 5) f . Assemble the remaining battery bolt to other side of battery support and fasten terminal guard to ~twith remaining internaVextema1 lockwasher and wing nut, (Shown full size on pg. 6). Tighten wing nuts securely by hand (Fig. 5). NOTE: KEEP TERMINAL ACCESS DOORS CLOSED WHEN NOT IN USE.

6. Melntenence After Flrst 2 Hours (Two Mowlngs) Changing oil after the first two hours (or two mowings) will help eliminate break-in residue which might be damaging lo your engine.

READ THlSOWNER'S MANUAL BEFORE OPRATlNG YOUR LAWN TRACTOR. If you understand the unit and its operation, you will achieve efficient and peak performance. While reading the manual, compare the illustrations with your Lawn Tractor to familiarize yourself with the location of various controls and adjustments. Study the operating instructions and safety precautions thoroughly to insure proper functioning of your Lawn Tractor and to prevent injury to yourself and others. Be sure to pay strict attention to all warnings and cautions: they are included for your safety. Save this manual for future reference.

ATTACHMENT CLUTCH LEVER: Push lever up to engage attachment. There will be an engine hesitation as the clutch engages. ATTACHMENT LIFT LEVER: Use the attachment lift lever
to raise and lower the attachment mounted to your tractor. Pull lever back slightly and push button, then move the lift lever forward to lower attachment.
GEARSHIFT: Press the clutch/brake pedal down firmly

and move gear shift laver to desired speed.
IGNITION: Place key in ignition and turn to the right to start. The switch spring returns from the start positon. LIGHT SWITCH: Turns the headlights on and off. PARKING BRAKE: To set the parking brake, push the
clutch/brake pedal completely down. Hold the parking brake lever in "Engage" position and release pressure from pedal. Clutch/brake pedal will remain in brake position.
CLUTCH/BRAKE PEDAL: The pedal has 2 functions; a

clutch and a brake. To engage the brake push the pedal completely down.

5 . Mowing Tips
NOTE: TIRE CHAINS CANNOT BE USED WlTH THE MOWER ATTACHED.
Mower should be adjusted properly front to back and side t o side for good mowing performance. Refer to REPAIR AND ADJUSTMENT section (page 22). Use the runner on the R.H. side as a guide; the blade cuts approximately an inch outside the runner (Fig. 8). Drive so that clippings are discharged onto the area that has been cut. Have the cut area to the right of the machine. This will result in a more even distribution of clippings and more uniform cutting. When mowing large areas (Fig. 9), start by furning to the right so that the clippins will discharge away from shrubs, fences, driveways, etc. After two or three rounds, mow in the opposite direction making left hand turns until finished.
CAUTION: BEFORE YOU MOVE THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER, COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN GEAR BOX DAMAGE.

If grass is extremely tall, it should be mowed twice. The first time cut relatively high; the second time to the desired height. The left hand side of mower should be used for trimming. See Speed Selection Chart. Do not mow tall, dry (brown) grass over 6 inches tall. It is a fire hazard.

3. Blade Care
A GRADE 5 HEAT TREATED BOLT CAN BE IDENTIFIED BY THREE LINES ON THE BOLT HEAD AS SHOWN AT LEFT.
For best results mower blades muast be kept sharp. The blades can be sharpened with a few strokes of a file, or on a grinding wheel. We suggest they be sharpened after every 25 hours of mowing. Do not attempt to sharpen while on mower. If you mow in sandy soil check the blades after each two mowings. The sand wears the blade away rapidly. a . Blade Replacement Raise mower to highest position to permit access to blades. 7 . Remove the hex head bolt, lockwasher and flat washer (Fig. 7 7 ) (turn counterclockwise) (-). 2 . Remove and discard old blade. 3 . Clean top and bottom of mower housing. 4 . Install new blade with SHARP EDGE DOWN and secure with flat washer, lockwasher and hex head bolt. TIGHTEN SECURELY.

b . When grinding, care should be taken to maintain blade balance and the blade should be checked for proper balance before reinstallation on mower. An unbalanced or bent blade will cause excessive vibration when running, and eventual damage to mower or engine. Replace bent or damaged blades. c . To check blade balance, drive a nail into a beam or wall. Leave about one inch of the straight nail exposed. Place center hole of clean blade over the head of the nail (Fig. 131. NOTE: CENTER

6 . Check Engine Oil Level

NOTE: DO NOT CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL WITH ENGINE RUNNING.
Several minutes after stopping engine, check engine oil level with tractor on level ground. Wipe dipstick (Fig. 7 5) clean, screw it down tight for a few seconds, remove and read oil level. If necessary, add oil until "FULL" mark is reached. (See chart above). NOTE: DO NOT
OVERFILL.
7 . Clean Air Cleaner Element (Fig. 16)

a. Remove two cover knobs and remove air cleaner cover. b. Remove foam pre-cleaner. - - - Wash pre-cleaner in liquiddetergent and warm water to remove dirt. - - - Wrap pre-cleaner in cloth and s ueeze dry. - - - Saturate foam in engine oil. queeze to remove excess oil. c. Remove two nuts from top of cartridge. d. Remove cartrid e and clean air cleaner body carefully to prevent %idfrom entering carburetor. Brush dirt from lower air cleaner body into duct. e. Clean cartridge by gently tapping on flat surface. If very dirty, replace cartridge. f. Reassemble air cleaner.

The best time to change engine oil is at the end of a day's operation when all dirt and foreign materials are suspended in the hot oil. Capacity is 1 - 1/2 quarts. NOTE: DO NOT OVERFILL. Dipstick assembly must be securely tightened into tube at all times when engine is operating.

1 1 . Starting your Tractor With a Weak Battery

If your battery is too weak to start the engine, it should be recharged. If "jumper cables" are used for emergency starting, follow this procedure:

Release parking brake. Pull belt as far as possible over top of clutch pulley. Reset parking brake. Pull belt over top of clutch pulley (Fig. 23). Pull belt out through shift gate to remove from tractor (Fig. 24). Install belt by -reversing above procedure.

20. Mower Installation
Your Mower installs without the use of tools. Raise Attachment Lift Lever (Fig. 2 8 ) to its highest position. Turn height adjustment knob to lowest position (Fig. 30). a . Slide Mower under tractor, discharge guard to R.H. Side. b . lnstall front hinge pin through axle and parallel link (Fig. 31). Secure with retainer spring. c . lnstall rear hinge pin through mower lift brackets and parallel link (Fig. 31). Secure with retainer spring. d . lnstall clutch rod in clutch lever (Fig. 31). e . Move Attachment lift lever (Fig. 2 8 ) forward to lower suspension arms. Slide trunnions through lift bracket holes and secure with retainer springs (Fig. 2 7 . ) f . Roll belt over engine pulley. Make sure belt is inside belt guides (Fig. 39). See belt drive schematic decal on mower housing. g . Use Attachment lift lever (Fig. 2 8 ) t o raise mower. h . 23. Mower Drive Bdt Adjustment

Your tractor has been manufactured with the ability to readjust the mower belt drive to provide you with longer belt life.
EXTENSION
If the Attachment Clutch Lever (Fig. 29 travels forward in the slot before spring tension resistance is evident, adjustment is necessary. NOTE CHECK FOR PROPER SPRING TENSION WITH ENGINE OFF AND LlFT LEVER IN HIGHEST POSITION.

Side-to-Side Mower Adjustment Depress lift lever plunger and use lift lever to raise mower to maximum cutting height. Measure height from bottom of curl to ground line at front of mower. Distance "A"shou1d be the same on both sides (Fig. 33). If distance " A" needs to be changed, snap out access hole cover on L.H. side above footrest. Use 11/16" wrench on nuts "6" and "C" at side-to-side adjustment trunnion (Fig. 34) . To raise left side of mower, loosen nut "6" and tighten nut "C". To lower left side of mower, loosen nut "C" and tighten nut "6".

25. Storage
Remove mower from tractor for winter storage. When mower is to be stored for a period of time, clean it thoroughly, remove all dirt, grease, leaves, etc. give blades and underside of housing a good coat of grease or rust preventative. Store in a clean dry area. A . Fuel System It is important to prevent gum deposits from forming in essential fuel system parts such as the carburetor, fuel filter, fuel hose, or tank during storage. Also, experience indicates that alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage. To avoid engine problems, the fuel system should be emptied before storage of 30 days or longer. B . Engine Oil Drain (with engine warm) and replace with clean engine oil, (See chart page 76).
C . Cylinder 7 . Remove spark plug. 2 . Pour one ounce of oil through spark plug hole into cylinder. 3 . Turn ignition key to "START" position for a few seconds to distribute oil. 4 . Replace with new spark plug.
Battery 7 . Prior to storage, clean terminals and top of battery. 2 . Disconnect cable from positive side of battery.

BRIGGS 81STRATTON ENGINE WARRANTY POLICY
To avoid misunderstandings which might occur between engine owners and authorized Briggs & Stratton service accounts, we are listing some o f the causes of engine failure, where repair or replacement is NOT covered by Briggs & Stratton warranty.
NORMAL WEAR
Warranty will not cover repair where normal use has exhausted the life of a part or engine. Engines, like all parts replacement and service to perform well. It should be remembered that mechanical devices, need p e r ~ o d ~ c the service life o f any englne is dependent on the care it receives and the conditions under which i t has to ooerate. Some applications, such a t~llers, s trash pumps, rotary mowers, are very often used in dusty or dirty conditions, which can cause what appears t o be premature wear. Such wear, when caused by dirt, dust, spark plug cleaning grit or other abrasive material, which has entered the engine because of improper maintenance, is not covered by Warranty.
ABUSE OR NEGLECT
1. Bent or broken crankshafts: Such damage is normally the result of abuse, such as striking a solid object with the cutter blade on a rotary lawn mower, and is not covered by Warranty.
2. Engine repairs required from the use of contaminated or stale fuel are not covered by Warranty. Such failures
would include sticking valves, and carburetors and fuel pipes which are clogged by gum deposits which form' through the use o f stale fuel. Always use clean fresh regular gasoline.
3. Parts which are scored or broken because an engine was operated without sufficient lubricating oil, the
proper grade o f lubricating oil or contaminated lubricating oil are not covered by Warranty. Check oil level at least every five hours and refill when necessary. Change oil at recommended intervals.
4. Damage caused by overheating or overspeeding i s not covered by Warranty. Overspeeding or overheating occurs i f the cooling fins become plugged with dirt, grass or debris, or if an engine is operated in a confined area without sufficient ventilation. Clean fins on the cylinder, cylinder head and flywheel regularly. 5. Damage or wear caused by dirt which enters the engine because of improper air cleaner maintenance is not covered by Warranty. Clean and re-oil the air cleaner regularly.
6. Damage or wear caused by grit from blast cleaning spark plugs is not covered by Warranty. We do not approve of cleaning spark plugs on an abrasive blast cleaning machine, since grit can remain in the plug, and later enter the engine. 7. Warranty does not cover the tune up or adjustment of an engine unless the need for such repair is the result of defects i n material or workmanship or both. If equlpment is assembled and adjusted by the owner, the engine Operating and Maintenance lnstructlons are sufficiently clear t o permit the average owner to make minor adjustments. Such mlnor adjustments are NOT covered by Warranty.
