ECO Living Programme @ Lorong Lew Lian Audit 6 (Recycling) Venue: Date: Time: Overview ECO Singapore is organising an ECO Living Programme for blocks 1 to 8 at Lorong Lew Lian in conjuction with Braddell Heights Zone B Residents Committee (RC) with volunteers from Starbucks. ECO Living Programme is a community grassroots programme that aims to relief the burden of low/ middle-income families while doing our bit for the Earth. We will do this by performing energy, water and waste audits in HDB households in order to identify and advise on areas for improvement. This audit was the fourth one for Lorong Lew Lian and focused on the theme of energy and water. Objectives To create awareness about the door-to-door recycling collection programme To share with the residents tips on what can or cannot be recycled To gather feedback from the residents Blocks 1 8, Lorong Lew Lian 17 Sep 2011 9am 12.30pm

Overview of Audit 6 A representative from ECO Singapore arrived at 8 am to prepare the necessary logistics at the Community Hall near block 5. 7 enthusiastic volunteers, including 2 from Starbucks participated in this audit. At 9.15am, the volunteers did a short self-introduction and collected their logistics. Each volunteer would get a clipboard containing the resident info sheets, audit checklists, volunteer infosheet, feedback form and star stickers.

A briefing was conducted to run through with the volunteers the procedure to follow when visiting the residents.

At 9.45am, the volunteers then fanned out to the various blocks. The volunteers were tasked to quiz the residents on their awareness of recycling and also gather feedback from them. By 11.45am, all the volunteers had completed their allocated units and returned to the Community Hall. At 12.30pm, the programme officially ended. Results A total of 37 households went through the audit. 31 residents were not at home. Feedback Although the number of volunteers were small, but they were very enthusiastic. Most had done the audit before and even the new ones could pick it up easily and enjoyed interacting with the residents! A feedback form was sent to volunteers and they shared that through this audit, they were able to understand some of the problems the residents were facing. They suggested better use of rewards to motivate residents. For example, some residents were looking forward to a reward for participating in all 6 audits (ie. collecting 6 stickers). Many were also interested in the paint-job that would be given to the top 5 savers. The volunteer debrief could be improved in the future to gather feedback directly.
