THE SKIN I LIVE IN
Dir. Pedro Almodvar, Opens 11/11
From the exquisite mind responsible for ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, TALK TO HER,
LIVE FLESH, BAD EDUCATION, and VOLVER comes a new masterpiece, THE SKIN I
LIVE IN. Antonio Banderas plays a wealthy, well-respected plastic surgeon in
Madrid with a beautiful woman imprisoned in the basement of his lavish home.
Given Almodvars unmistakable tradition of rich, colorful set design, gorgeous
cinematography, and unimaginable plot twists, THE SKIN I LIVE IN promises to be
one of the most tantalizing, whimsically twisted and visually enticing cinematic
experiences this fall.
This holiday season theres a whole new bag of celluloid presents to unwrap: new buzz-worthy features from Pedro Almodvar, Lars von Trier, and Alexander Payne (THE SKIN
I LIVE IN, MELANCHOLIA, and THE DESCENDANTS, respectively); a brilliant directorial debut starring the Olsen sister you didnt know existed (MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE);
a second helping of Guy Ritchies SHERLOCK HOLMES; golden lady Meryl Streep stepping into the shoes of Englands IRON LADY, Margaret Thatcher; the return of the THE
MUPPETS; and David Finchers adaptation of the worlds favorite pulp novel, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas indeed.
NEW RELEASES
MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE
Dir. Sean Durkin, R, Opens 11/4
MARTHY MARCY MAY MARLENE (coined mmmmmmmm when it premiered at
Sundance) is the writing and directing feature debut from newcomer Sean Durkin.
Remember his name and write it down - Durkin is well on his way to being the
next big bad Hollywood director. MMMM opens with a girl (The Olsen Twins other,
actually very talented sister, Elizabeth) feeing from something very, very terrible.
THE SKIN I LIVE IN
MELANCHOLIA
Dir. Lars von Trier, R, Opens 11/18
Chaos continues to reign as we bring Lars von Triers new flm to town,
MELANCHOLIA. This time dead foxes are out and the end-of-the-world is in.
MELANCHOLIA takes places in a mansion. Its the night of Justines (Kirsten Dunst)
wedding and we fnd out something is very wrong with her. Sadness surrounds
her heart and theres nothing anyone can do to cure it. An even bigger tragedy is
also on the horizon: theres a planet ten times the size of Earth thats been hiding
behind the sun called Melancholia, and its headed straight towards us. In von
Triers previous work, he wants us to feel pain. In MELANCHOLIA, were supposed
to understand it.
7 November - December 2011 Schedule of Special Events - for complete calendar and tickets visit www.drafthouse.com
IRON LADY
Dir. Phyllida Lloyd, Opens 12/16
We all know how easy it is to get excited when Meryl Streep is about to dominate a
new role and probably (defnitely) win another Academy Award, but when that role
involves Meryl taking on the polarizing frst female Prime Minister of England, the
Iron Lady herself, Margaret Thatcher, its easy to get worked into an absolute
ft. This is a woman about who super-human Meryl herself said, The prospect of
exploring the swath cut through history by this remarkable woman is a daunting
and exciting challenge. I am trying to approach the role with as much zeal, fervor
and attention to detail as the real Lady Thatcher possesses I can only hope my
stamina will begin to approach her own! Look out!
THE DESCENDANTS
Dir. Alexander Payne, R, Opens 11/23
THE DESCENDANTS picked up a lot of buzz at this years Toronto International Film
Festival. The reasons? George Clooney stars and Alexander Payne (the man
responsible for ABOUT SCHMIDT and SIDEWAYS) is at the helm. THE DESCENDANTS
follows a father (Clooney) who just cant get it together. After his wife gets put
on life support from a jet-skiing accident, its up to him to reconnect with his
daughters and fgure out whether to keep or sell the familys land.
SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS
Dir. Guy Ritchie, PG-13, Opens 12/16
Thank god Guy Ritchie gave up on making another British gangster flm (for now,
at least) and focused on a sequel to the box ofce success from 2009, SHERLOCK
HOLMES, our favorite difcult-case-solving-smarter-than-the-average-man
detective of the same name. Pairing up again are Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes
and Jude Law as Watson; this time theyre both back to solve more mysteries, run
in slow motion, and from the trailer, wear dresses and look pretty. As you know,
Holmes will go the distance to get any case solved.
NEW RELEASES
THE MUPPETS
Dir. James Bobin, PG, Opens 11/23
The Muppets are back! Its been twelve years since weve last seen Jim Hensons
lovable little rascals on the big screen and the team behind the widely successful
FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL (in which some Muppets had a small cameo) are
responsible for making this happen. In THE MUPPETS, Kermit and company have
all disbanded and gone their separate ways. After hearing a wealthy oilman named
Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) has plans to destroy the famous Muppet Theater for
drilling purposes, Walter, the worlds biggest Muppet fan (whos technically a
Muppet himself), his brother Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) track down
and rally up Kermit and the rest of the gang to raise $10 million by curating the
The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever. Were promised all the Muppets will return and
there will be some surprise cameos, as well. Nostalgia at its most darling.
THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
Dir. David Fincher, R, Opens 12/21
Labeled The feel bad movie of Christmas, David Fincher adapts the bestselling novel
of the same name. Daniel Craig stars as Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist in search
of a woman whos been missing for fourty years. Assisting him on his search is
computer hacker Lizbeth Salander (THE SOCIAL NETWORKs Rooney Mara), a girl
with a dragon tattoo and lots of metal on her face.

EVERYDAY SUNSHINE: THE STORY OF FISHBONE
RZ 11/14
Dir. Lev Anderson, 2010, 107 min, NR
Too many behind-the-scenes music docs follow the rise and fall of Band X with
usual references to drugs, booze, one-night stands, and bickering, but the story of
Fishbone is far more interesting and completely unique. One of the major SoCal live
bands of the 80s, Fishbone intriguingly combined punk, metal, funk, ska, and jazz and
got a record contract. But no music executive quite knew how to categorize a group of
Black musicians who seemed able to play every style. Marketing Fishbone became a
commercial nightmare. Even though the band members, especially Angelo Moore and
Kendall Jones, had been best friends since being bused from South Central L.A. to
public schools in the Valley, the band eventually imploded because of the infuence
of a cult on Kendall and excessive playing of the Theremin by Angelo. With animation,
live performances, interviews with well-known fans, and then and now footage of
the band and its members, the flmmakers have fashioned a fascinating study of a
band that should have been mega-big. There is still time. (Austin Film Society)
End of an Ear Records and Room Service Vintage help us create and curate this weekly series of movies focused around the world of music. Join us every Monday night at

MUSIC MONDAY
FIX - THE MINISTRY MOVIE
Dir. Doug Freel, 2001, 110 min
RZ 11/7
An unprecedented, all-access look at the pioneering 90s industrial band and its
founder, Al Jourgenson -- a polarizing fgure equally reviled for his temperamental,
drug abusing ways and celebrated for his game-changing approach to making music.
Love em or hate em, Al and the gang cut quite a swath in their day, selling millions
of records and inspiring the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Korn, and even Janes Addiction.
Featuring interviews with members of the aforementioned groups, plus Tool, Korn,
Motorhead, Melvins, The Jesus Lizard, Janes Addiction, Dead Kennedys, Skinny Puppy,
and Amen.

TEEN ROUTINES: The Self-made Magic Of
R. Stevie Moore
Dir. Kier-la Janisse, 2010, 55 min.
RZ 12/5
Often referred to as The Godfather of Home Recording, New Jersey-based outsider
artist R. Stevie Moore has released over 400 cassettes and CD-Rs through his mail-
order club since the late 70s, and has created DIY music videos to match, totalling
upwards of 30 DVDs available on his website (each packed with 120 minutes of
footage). Despite his prolifc output, fame has eluded R. Stevie, and he has a low
profle even among outsider artists. Still, a short excursion into his bizarre musical
universe speaks to his songwriting genius. Infuenced by Brian Wilson, The Beatles,
Syd Barrett and Frank Zappa (as well as fellow outsiders like The Shaggs), R.
Stevie nevertheless remains a singular artist, a self-taught musician who writes,
performs and records almost everything himself. This 55-minute program focuses
on R. Stevies mid-career output (1974-1988), and contains intertitles for additional
historical context and commentary, as well as an animated opening credit sequence
by Canadian independent animator Leslie Supnet.
BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS: EXODUS -
LIVE AT THE RAINBOW
2007, 75 min
RZ 12/26
Come experience Bob Marley as youve never seen him before with this classic 1977
live show on the big screen. This recently restored and never before seen version of
Live at the Rainbow was taped at the famed Roundhouse in London during Bobs
seminal Exodus Tour. Merry Christmas to you, Bufalo Soldiers.
MUSIC MONDAY
Austin City Limits Reel Rarities: LORETTA LYNN
RZ 11/28 : VL 12/5
So far our ACL Reel Rarities series has featured classic performances from some
iconic gentlemen (Tom Waits, BB King, Willie Nelson), but that makes us long overdue
on spotlighting a great female performer. And where better to start than with one of
the absolute frst ladies of country music, Loretta Lynn. This episode from the 1983
season of Austin City Limits showcases the down-home songstress who is always rich
in vocal form and long on country charm.
All proceeds beneft HAAM, Health Alliance for Austin Musicians.
Austin City Limits Reel Rarities: DECEMBERISTS &
EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY
RZ 12/19 : VL 12/26
With November being our frst month showcasing one the many great ladies whove
performed on the series (the iconic Loretta Lynn), the December program is our frst to
spotlight some of the eclectic variety of more contemporary talent coming to the ACL
stage. This episode from 2007 is a split bill featuring indie kings The Decemberists,
and Austins own critically-acclaimed instrumental group Explosions in the Sky.
All proceeds beneft HAAM, Health Alliance for Austin Musicians.
Best Of New Wave Theater 3.0
RZ 12/12
When punk re-erupted as New Wave, L.A. journalist David Jove and rock-n-roll
character Peter Ivers were frst in line to document it. NEW WAVE THEATRE debuted
on humble UHF station 18, but found rapid footing with misft scenesters hungry
for interviews and live footage of burgeoning music icons including Fear, 45 Grave,
Suburban Lawns, Circle Jerks and The Dead Kennedys, to name just a few. The songs
were recorded live and raw, with the studio audience of trashed-out maniacs pogoing
and spitting to show their adoration, and Ivers hosted the show with a zealous grin
and a penchant for oddball theatrics. The show came to an end in 1983 when he was
found bludgeoned to death in his apartment - a crime which has yet to be solved - but
this reverberating chronicle of one of musics most chaotic and exciting transitions,
presenting footage not seen since the shows initial broadcasts, is a ftting legacy
to Ivers work. Author Josh Frank (In Heaven, Everything Is Fine: The Unsolved Life
of Peter Ivers and the Lost History of New Wave Theatre will join us for this very
special screening.

SHOCK WAVES
Dir. Ken Wiederhorn, 1977, 90 min, PG, 35mm
RZ 11/8
Easily the fnest water-breathing albino nazi zombie movie in the history of the
genre. Unstoppable ancient ham John Carradine gets all salty and shirtless for his
role as a cruise ship captain that beaches a boatload of tourists on the shores of a
remote island populated by Peter Cushing and a bevy of blonde, blue-eyed walking
corpses. Turns out they were a not-so-failed Third Reich experiment dubbed the
Death Corps, a top secret race of indestructible nazi storm troopers. These aquatic
Aryan a-holes spend the next 80 minutes stalking and murdering every stereotype
available within 100 miles of the archipelago. The image of the Death Corps rising
from the water will be burned into your psyche for eternity, no foolin. In fact,
director Weiderhorn was so impressed with these sequences that he reused them
in his 1984 opus MEATBALLS II. (Zack)
Be violently assaulted by our weekly series of late-night 35mm horror movies every Tuesday night at the Ritz, and thanks to the mighty Vulcan Video and the American Genre
Film Archive you can get your face ripped of for just a buck! Weve scavenged the bowels of the earth for the most shocking and seldom-seen celluloid terror treasures,
guaranteed to leave you gasping for air, thirsting for blood, or - at the very least - scratching your head. No foolin, junior... The Ritz is Ground Zero for evisceration, degradation
and mutilation!!! Eeeaaaauuggghh!!!
TERROR TUESDAY
10 TO MIDNIGHT
Dir. J. Lee Thompson, 1983, 101 min, R, 35mm
RZ 11/1
CHARLES BRONSON BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION!! Everyone already knows that the only
two perfect things that have ever happened in this goddamned world are Charles
Bronson and horror movies. The idea of both of them colliding will send any sane
person into dangerously violent entertainment seizures, but were so excited
about this flm that were willing to risk your life. Though Bronsons masculine
image immediately lands any of his flms in the Action category, 10 TO MIDNIGHT
is undeniably an 80s slasher masterpiece. A maladjusted young man falls into the
habit of stripping to his bare ass butt naked birthday suit and stalking his female
classmates. This soon leads to gruesome murder, and were treated to many shots
of a nude man(iac) tearing people into shredded gristle. The only man who can stop
him is...well, Ill let you guess, but heres a hint: Hes meaner than a bag of Hitlers
and hell shoot you 14 times for sneezing. (Zack)
I DRINK YOUR BLOOD
Dir. David Durston, 1970, 90 min, R, 35mm
RZ 11/15
This Satan-fueled anti-hippie railroader remains one of the most potent in horror
history, and was the crowning achievement of sometimes-gay-porn-director David
Durston. A small northeast town is invaded by a vanload of long-haired no-rules
cultists, who immediately begin to terrorize and drugulate everyone within reach.

DARKMAN
Dir. Sam Raimi, 1990, 96 min, R, 35mm
RZ 12/20
Long before EVIL DEAD legend Sam Raimi drowned in Hollywoods CGI stinkhole, he
unleashed this PHANTOM OF THE OPERA-favored superhero revenge movie. So sure,
go ahead and argue that its not a horror flm at all. Im not listening. Or you can
consider that no action movie features such heaping helpings of melting skin, severed
fngers, henchman head-crushing and mad science rage. DARKMAN is very truly a
comic book come to life, but the type of R-rated Mature Readers comic book that
your grandma would fnd under your bed and burn in the kitchen sink. Liam Neeson
(!) stars as Peyton Westlake, a brilliant biological researcher who angers the mob
and is blown to smithereens. Charred beyond recognition, he uses his experimental
processes to alter his monstrous appearance in dozens of ways to exact vicious
revenge on his would-be murderers. What follows is a torrential assault of exploding
helicopters, exploding buildings and exploding bodies, allegedly ghost-written by the
Coen Brothers and defnitely capped of with one of the better cameos in lowbrow
movie history. (Zack)
TERROR TUESDAY
THE BOOGEYMAN
Dir. Ulli Lommel, 1980, 82 min, R, 35mm
RZ 12/27
A young woman witnesses a murder in a mirrors refection. Twenty years later,
the mirror shatters, the victims spirit is released and the stage is set for full-scale
spectral revenge. With telekinetic slayings and stilted performances by half-naked
nimrods, THE BOOGEYMAN is a classic campfre ghost story coated in the awkward
pizzazz of the best low budget 80s horror. Writer/director Lommel started out as
a stock actor for ultra-respected flmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder, but took
a stunning career careen to embroil himself in punk-era exploitation with squalid
character studies (BLANK GENERATION) and new wave Hitler musicals (STRANGERS IN
PARADISE). He now pays his rent making incredibly cheap straight-to-video biopics
about serial killers. Dark. Rarely has anyone deliberately made so anti-triumphant a
leap from highbrow artist to lowbrow wasteoid. Mr. Lommel, we salute you. (Zack)
INFRA-MAN

monster buddies! Fortunately, modern science has just completed construction of
the ultimate cyborg defender: INFRA-MAN! All other ultra-powered crimebashers

survived! See our favorite creature- crushing robostar use roundhouse kicks, sonic
lightning beams and random inexplicable explosions to defeat ultimate evil! When
the plotless no-rules cartoon mayhem of Godfrey Ho collides with the martial arts

DEAD & BURIED
Dir. Gary Sherman, 1981, 95 min, R, 35mm
RZ 12/13
The sherif of a sleepy New England town makes all kinds of exaggerated upset faces
when the local populace begins engaging in mass homicide. It seems that every other
citizen in Potters Bluf is in on the dirty doins, including Robert Freddy Englund,
all- American dreamgirl Lisa Blount and a charmingly feeble 90-year-old undertaker
who couldnt be more pleased by the sudden increase in his revenue. Though the
flm unfolds with Ray Bradbury-esque fairytale weirdness, theres more than a
few bucketfuls of shocking gore, including a downright brain-curdling showdown
between a hypodermic needle and an eyeball. Director Sherman is the genius behind
the mighty RAW MEAT and the equally grimy VICE SQUAD, but teamed with veteran
efects maniac Stan Winston and screenwriter Dan OBannon of ALIEN and RETURN
OF THE LIVING DEAD fame, he becomes a rampaging geyser of heart-crushing terror.
Blecccchhh!!! (Zack)
NIGHTMARE CITY a.k.a. CITY OF THE WALKING DEAD
Dir. Umberto Lenzi, 1980, 88 min, R, 35mm
RZ 12/6
Sure, the makeup looks like peanut butter, the blood looks like nail polish and an
undead creature gets beaten to death with a blanket...but nothing can stand in
the way of the most ill-conceived Italio-trash vampire-zomboid wreck-bomb in
the goddamn galaxy! A radioactive airplane lands and immediately spews forth a
seemingly endless fountain of drippy man-scabs and scumbos, each on a feral
cannibalistic rampage. To call them zombies is to overlook the fact that these shit-
caked spazznuts can operate machinery, fre automatic weapons, and run faster than
a fat kid behind an ice cream truck. Director Lenzi may have made his name with
jungle cannibal epics like MAKE THEM DIE SLOWLY, but his go-for-broke dedication
to fesh-ripping ofensiveness hit a crescendo in this underappreciated holocaust of
anti-human bloodrage. (Zack)
PHANTASM
Dir. Don Coscarelli, 1979, 88 min, R, 35mm
RZ 11/29
Very few contemporary horror movies are strong enough to be considered great art
by uptight, fun-free, anti-horror movie scholars. THE SHINING, the original DAWN
OF THE DEAD and LET THE RIGHT ONE IN are on this very short list, but PHANTASMs
ingenuity and unique mythology defnitely earn its inclusion. The plot sounds like
something that youd fnd scribbled on Charles Mansons bedsheets: A teenage boy
discovers that an indestructible grandpa is harvesting the dead to transform them
into dwarves that will serve him in another dimension. Luckily, the local marijuana-
loving ice cream man is willing to join in the battle against the paranormal retiree.
Shotguns and shapeshifting take center stage as unholy darkness threatens to
swallow the town alive. Writer/director Coscarelli creates an impossibly absorbing
otherworld ruled by one of cinemas all-time greatest villains, and the unparalleled
score will haunt you for decades. Truly one of the most efective reality-liquefers in
horror history!! (Zack)

THE ELECTRIC CHAIR
Dir. Pat Patterson, 1977, 86 mins, R, 35mm
RZ 11/16
So, theres a double murder and a guy gets put on trial but hes exonerated and
someone else is caught and forced to face the music. Admittedly, nothing very
exciting there. But THE ELECTRIC CHAIR is so much more than the sum of its parts.
North Carolina Horror Movie Host and live Spook Show purveyor, Pat Patterson,
dropped dead in 1974, but before he died he ripped this throbbing black eel of a movie
out of his brain and threw it down like a gauntlet to the world. Though he lived in a
small town, Patterson was apparently possessed by a deep and abiding hatred for
small town life and values. This crude, hilarious flm is such a one-of-a-kind piece
that its hard to even consider it a real movie. It feels like a $100 church pageant. The
actors are unable to plausibly impersonate members of the human race, let alone
their characters; the dialogue is ridiculous and the special efects consist of a lit
sparkler atop a hideous homemade electric chair. You wont believe your eyes. (Lars)
Since 2001, weve been hosting a weekly program of exploitation classics. From Cheerleaders Gone Bad to Blaxploitation to 70s Action Cheese and even to Women In Prison,
its all there - scratches, splices and all. Many of these flms are so obscure that little is known or has been written about them. Some of them are bad, most of them are
enjoyable, and a rare few are mind-blowingly amazing. Weird Wednesdays is the vanguard of cinema exploration in Austin. Escape the crushing lameness of the real world
with us every week. For only a dollar!
WEIRD WEDNESDAY
TEENAGE MOTHER
Dir. Jerry Gross, 1967, 78 min, 35mm
RZ 11/9
Over the years Ive spilled a lot of fancy adjectives like astonishing, devastating and
mind-blowing, but when it comes to TEENAGE MOTHER, there just arent enough words
in the dictionary to describe the intense, at times overwhelming, strangeness of it all.
It follows in the tradition of white-coaters, the trade name for sexploitation flms
that purport to have social value as instructive medical tracts. Nudity was shown
(often in scenes of childbirth) but there was enough pseudo-educational padding to
make it legal. TEENAGE MOTHER was way late in the game, the trend had been over for
ten years or more when it was made, but it tops all the other flms in its absolutely
craven and mock-innocent eagerness to deliver weird sex thrills. The plot is about a
progressive Swedish high school teacher who begins work at a small-town American
high school. Her modern ideas about sexuality create controversy (sexy controversy!)
in the community and when called upon to resign shes forced to defend herself the
only way she knows how, by playing a graphic clinical flm of a forceps-assisted birth
at a PTA meeting. Its pretty special. With Fred Willard in his frst role! (Lars)
EMANUELLE IN PRISON

EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT THE RITZ FOR JUST A BUCK!
ABAR, THE FIRST BLACK SUPERMAN
Dir. Frank Packard, 1977,90 min, PG, 35mm
RZ 11/2
White people are evil, no doubt about it. If you need any evidence, a standard World
History textbook should provide more than enough damning testimony to put whitey
away for good. You would think there would be more blaxploitation movies like this
that come right out and say it. But no, very few flmmakers have had the courage
to portray suburban whites as venemous, back-stabbing racist scum. This movie is
out of control. A brilliant black scientist moves his family to an all-white middle-
class neighborhood and pretty soon all the soccer moms and pipe-smoking dads
are burning crosses in their yard and walking around with big protest signs saying
GO BACK TO AFRICA. So the scientist does exactly what most of us would do in his
situation. He creates a telepathic, bulletproof bald superman to fuck with the white
race! A very funny, very strange masterpiece. (Lars)

EMANUELLE IN PRISON
Dir. Bruno Mattei, 1983, 89 min, R, 35mm
RZ 12/14
Skinficks went upscale way upscale in the 70s with Just Jaeckins glossy
Emmanuelle series. The movies were slick enough and soft enough to be slightly
more respectable than the usual sex flms and audiences responded. Ticket sales
went through the roof. One theater held EMMANUELLE over for TWELVE YEARS! Of
course it didnt take long for cheapjack exploitation copycats to respond. The most
egregious example was the long-running Black Emanuelle series starring luscious
Indonesian model Laura Gemser as a globe-trotting photographer who gets into wild
sexual situations in exotic locations. Thanks to Miss Gemsers astonishing beauty
and total willingness to do anything at all, the movies were deserved successes in
back-alley sleaze palaces all over the world. This flm, one of the last of the series,
represents a last-gasp attempt by Italian bottom-feeder Bruno Mattei (BURIAL
GROUND) to combine the fagging appeal of the Emanuelle movies with the women-
in-prison genre. Never known for his taste or restraint, Mattei piles all his chips on the
table. Sex, gore, necrophilia its all here. Only the strong will survive.(Lars)
BLOOD FREAK
Dir. Brad F. Grinter & Steve Hawkes, 1972, 86 min, R,
35mm
RZ 11/23
This made-in-Florida poultry-monster extravaganza represents the outer limits
of what man can hope to achieve in the arena of bad cinema. Like Michelangelos
frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, we can understand easily enough
the means by which the work itself has been accomplished. What we cannot fully
comprehend is the genius which pervades every frame of this remarkable piece
of shit. Steve Hawkes stars as a sideburned Elvis-look biker with a drug problem
who is recruited as a guinea pig by two unscrupulous poultry technicians to eat an
experimental turkey of some sort. Not surprisingly, he turns into a giant turkey-
headed drug addict with a thirst for blood, blood, and more blood. In between the
brutal and hilarious murders are scenes in which the turkey-man gets laid, shoots up,
and fnds Jesus. Say no to drugs, OK? (Lars)
WEIRD WEDNESDAY
MAGIC CHRISTMAS TREE
Dir. Richard Parish, 1964, 60 min, G, 35mm
RZ 12/21
Special seasonal reprise of the Christmas-killing hit! Here it is: the evil holiday movie
weve all secretly been waiting for. It made its producers wealthy men and turned a
generation of children into santaphobic sociopaths. We are still paying the cost. Its a
very strange flm and were not sure why anyone would make it, but two words come
to mind: Malicious Intent. Why else would the young hero be abducted by a witch
and forced to uh, plant Satans magic seed in his backyard? The seed grows into a
tree that gives him three wishes. Then the kid abducts Santa Claus, straps him to a
chair and abuses him until he gets all the toys in the world. Plus theres a long race
between a lawnmower and a turtle and more tomfoolery presided over by the powers
of Darkness, including the appearance of a giant who says inappropriate things. We
cannot be held responsible for any lasting trauma. (Lars)
SURPRISE TITLE
RZ 12/28
We devote the last week or so of each year to our High For The Holidays programming.
During this magical period we show movies best appreciated when viewed through a
at Weird Wednesday this week, but let me just assure you that if youve been saving

THE WORKING GIRLS
Dir. Stephanie Rothman, 1974, 81 min, R, 35mm
RZ 11/30
Exploitation flm has a reputation of being unkind and unfair to women, both
onscreen and of, but a closer look reveals that more female directors worked in
exploitation flms than in studio flms. While big Hollywood may pat itself on the back
about Katherine Bigelows (well-deserved) success, many other worthies cut their
teeth and learned their trade in low budget genre flms. A case in point is the highly
talented Stephanie Rothman. While her friends, peers and flm school classmates
like Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese and others moved from cheap drive-in
flms to the next level, she never caught the break she needed. THE WORKING GIRLS
is Rothmans last flm to date. Its storyline, about the tough economic necessities and
inequities facing a group of young women, is dappled with cynicism but the movie is
nonetheless warm, generous and funny. Its a sex comedy in all senses of the word.
Ironically, when the flm was issued on home video, the releasing company seized
upon the novel popularity of costar Cassandra (Elvira) Peterson and renamed the flm
ELVIRA NAKED. Ouch. (Lars)
MITCHELL
Dir. Andrew McLaglan, 1975, R, 97 min, 35mm
RZ 12/7
This movie, which feels like a pilot for a KOJAK or COLOMBO-style cop show, stars the
excellent actor Joe Don Baker, who seems to realize that hes caught up in a very bad
movie but strives heroically nonetheless to provide some entertainment value in the
cliche-infested unorthodox detective story. Baker, who is heavier and more southern
than any other leading man I can think of, resembles the fat Elvis. Thats not an insult.
I like Joe Don and Elvis a lot. And Baker has a certain Elvis-like charisma that he
plays to the hilt here, even though his character is written as a variant on the eternal
fat bastard archetype. In his quest to nail racist scumbag murderer John Saxon, he
(literally) steps on the toes of the wrong people and ends up in the shit with both
the police and the mob. Baker is pretty much the whole show here as he chugs can
after can of Schlitz and tries to keep a straight face. There are competent supporting
players like Saxon and Martin Balsam but they all look like theyre in a hurry to get to
the bank before it closes and cash their checks. Linda Evans is surprisingly likable as
Mitchells pothead prostitute squeeze. (Lars)

Normally, the Alamo frowns on people who talk or disrupt the uninterrupted viewing experience in any way, but when The Action Pack takes over the room to celebrate a
pop culture classic those rules no longer apply. The Action Pack screens favorite flms and infuses them with subtitled quotes so everyone can cry out their favorite lines in
unison, props so we can shoot cap guns at the screen along with our favorite action stars, and preshow antics and games that turn the theater into a party before the event

THE ACTION PACK
Quote-Alongs: THE BIG LEBOWSKI
Dir. Joel Coen, 1998, R, 117 min
SL Mondays
If youre at all like me, you quote this movie every day, all through your regular life,
and at times you forget that some of the things you say all the time are actually
from the movie. Well from now on, that aggression will not stand, man, because
at long last The Action Pack has put together THE BIG LEBOWSKI Quote-Along and
we cant wait to see all of our Little Lebowski Urban Achievers out at the theater.
As always with a quote-along, all of your favorite lines will be subtitled karaoke-
style so it will be easy to yell out, Nobody fucks with the Jesus! at exactly the
right time (youre on your own for getting the accent, though). Well have bowling
pin beer available, a giant sized bowling game onstage before the flm, and a bunch
of props to help make the best moments of the flm come to life (including a bag
of Walters dirty whites). So, go pee on a strangers rug, pull the marmot out of
your bathtub, and come down to the Alamo and The Highball for our new weekly
tradition. Mark it 8, Dude. (Henri Mazza)
Tough Guy Cinema: TOMBSTONE
Dir. Dir. George P. Cosmatos & Kevin Jarre,
1993, 130 min, R
LC 11/3, 11/10
When peace ofcer Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) decides to hang up his guns and
retire anonymously to Tombstone, Arizona, he didnt plan on being disrupted by
a band of outlaws, he was famous for eliminating. Clearly, it was time to bust out
his shotgun one last time to tell em THE LAWS COMING, YOU TELL EM IM COMING!
Typically The Action Pack likes to stick pretty close to our Michael Bay and AHNULD
Schwarzenegger roots but we just love this movie too much to not want to try and
recreate our own shoot-out at the OK Corral with an all out shoot-along screening
of Tombstone, where everyone is being handed a 6-shooter and a ton of caps to gun
fght along with every bad ass moment on the screen. So come on, why wouldnt
you wanna see the most star-studded cast of roguish outlaws and strapping law
men duking it out in one of the most famous showdowns in gunfght history?
So you gonna do somethin? Or are you just gonna stand there and bleed?

still going as strong as ever with their little bundle on the way, and we thought we
should take this opportunity to bring the popular Sing-Along back...but with a twist.
Jay may be married to Beyonce but he has been bromancing all over the world
and going H.A.M. with his boy Kanye. And with that we bring you Ye-Z in Love: The
Beyonce/Jay-Z/Kanye West Sing-Along where we jam all our favorites music videos
from each artist and as many collaborations into two hours as we possibly can. As

Weve known we wanted to do a NIGHTMARE sing-along for a while now, but we
werent sure what season worked best. Is it a Halloween movie? A Christmas
movie? Should we put it in around Thanksgiving and split the diference? In the
end, we decided we didnt really care and we dont need a reason to celebrate the
greatest Halloween/Christmas hybrid movie of all time. Oh, how HORRIBLE THIS
November WILL BE! All the beloved songs will be subtitled on the screen for your
singing pleasure and The Action Pack will be handing out all sorts of delightfully
awful goodies thatll make you belt out WHAT...IS...THIS!? (Greg MacLennan)

Yippe Kai Yay, motherfucker. DIE HARD may just be the ultimate Tough Guy movie.
With John McClane, Bruce Willis created a Tough Guy who was instantly relatable
but still impossibly awesome. Because even though he single-handedly takes
down Hans Grubers entire gang of terrorists while roaming around an ofce
building barefoot, he still lets us see how vulnerable he is and that makes him
all the more badass.

doesnt feel like Christmas at the Alamo unless we get to share this movie with
you. So we decided to spread that Christmas cheer the best way we know how - by
singing and quoting loud for all to hear. And dont worry, if you can quote alone,
then you can quote around other people. Theres really no diference!

them alone in our confetti flled party cave. Well HOARD NO MORE! We are carefully
selecting some of our favorite music videos from all of our shows as well as videos
weve been keeping to ourselves and then assembling them in such a way to
hopefully make you fall in Middle School love with us. Well belt out some ballads,

release, heres the flms story: a coming of age story about a guy too old to be
coming of age. Alex (Allen Covert). age 35, lives with his grandmother (Doris

Some things are way too cool for any other theater in Austin. Whether its the movie mockers of Master Pancake, the intellectually stimulating DIONYSIUM, our continent-
crossing HD opera and orchestra presentations, or the mind-bending visits from friends like TV Carnage, weve got a corner in all things amazing. These are the things you
cant fnd anywhere else.
ONLY AT THE ALAMO
THE MASTER PANCAKE X-MAS SHOW
Master Pancake celebrates HANKSGIVING
RZ 11/18, 11/19 : VL 11/25, 11/26
This November Master Pancake feasts on Americas most beloved actor, Tom
Hanks, with a smorgasbord of his best and worst: its the frst ever Master Pancake
HANKSgiving! Love him or hate him (and who hates him?) you wont want to miss
this comic retrospective of the T-mans oeuvre, because for every SAVING PRIVATE
RYAN under his belt, theres a TURNER AND HOOCH lurking in his closet. Well be
roasting clips from both of those gems, as well as THE DA VINCI CODE, CAST AWAY,
TOY STORY, THE GREEN MILE, MAZES AND MONSTERS, BOSOM BUDDIES, APOLLO
13 and many, many more! Come out to the Alamo this November and show how
Hankful you are as Master Pancake lovingly eviscerates the most prolifc actor
of our time!
National Theater Live: THE KITCHEN
Dir. Bijan Sheibani
SL 11/10, 11/12
This past May the Alamo Drafthouse became your local option for experiencing
the theatrical glory of Londons National Theater is HD. These shows started with
Danny Boyles stage production of Frankenstein and they have all been great works
that we are thrilled to bring to Austin. This November season 2 of National Theater
live continues with two opportunities to catch The Kitchen. Set in the 1950s in a
West End restaurant, The Kitchen is a black comedy about a frenzied mix of chefs,
waitresses and porters trying to keep up in their high-pressure work place. Arnold
Weskers extraordinary play premiered at the Royal Court in 1959 and has since
been performed in over 30 countries. Dont miss your chance to see it without
leaving Austin!
AMIA Reels Of Steel
RZ 11/16, 11/17
Battles between hip hop DJs have been going on for nearly 30 years. The two
participants set up their turntables and try to blow each other of the stage by
cutting up crazier and more obscure vinyl. This November 30 were going to put a
whole new spin on it. Because this time instead of DJs, the competitors are hotshot
flm archivists, in town for the Association of Moving Image Archivists Convention,
and theyre bringing their most obscure, entertaining short flms. Its a battle to the
fnish as each archivist, armed with reel after reel of educational flms, cartoons,
home movies, stag flms and more, tries to get the crowd pumped into a frenzy
and win the fat gold chain that signifes AMIA Emulsion Propulsion Champ 2011!

TRAILERS FROM HELL! w/Joe Dante
SL 12/3
Exploitation flmmaking legend Joe Dante will be live in person to present a brand
new TRAILERS FROM HELL! show, a hosted collection of horror, scif, action and
generally crazed flm trailers from his vaults as well as the Alamo collection. Dante
will provide live commentary for his favorite classic trailers, and will be joined by
a live selection of your favorite Austin flmmakers, movie critics and cinematic
spazzoids (details to be released soon). TRAILERS FROM HELL! has become one
of the most crucial online destinations for movie obsessives, showcasing cinema
luminaries getting rabid about their favorite flms, and now you can join in on the
action. If you hate yourself and want to be miserable, MISS THIS SHOW!
ONLY AT THE ALAMO
AV Geeks: Balls Out
RZ 11/20
Alamo favorites the A/V Geeks return with another mind-bending show curated
from their collection over 24,000 16mm educational flms. In the past, the A/V
Geeks have challenged audiences with flms about drugs, bus safety, venereal
disease, shotguns, meat and more. This year, the presentation focuses on flms
that feature balls - amazing flms with bouncing spherical objects and the lessons
they can teach us. This show is a must see for any fan of old educational flms.
Below are just some of flms being screened:
THE HUNTSMAN - A young boys idyllic summer of rescuing and reselling golf balls
is devastated by teenage thugs and thoughts of revenge.
SINGLES - A bafing Christian flm about single balls attending Church groups.
MARBLE - An amazing Dutch flm featuring a boy, his magic marble and the Dutch
army! Prog rock soundtrack by members of Focus!
MOONPLAY - A little girl brings the Moon down to Earth as a bright bouncing ball
that wreaks havoc on a small Scandinavian village.
Video Hate Squad!: ELVES
Dir. Jefrey Mandel, 1989, 89 min, R, VHS!
RZ 12/11
Silly Nazis! Dont you know that if you use black magic to conjure up evil elves
on Christmas Eve to usher in the new master race, you better make sure that the
local department store Santa Claus isnt on hand to clean house? ELVES made its
unceremonious debut on the already-dusty video shelves of the late 80s, riding
the crashing wave of straight-to-VHS action/horror trash with supreme skill.
Dan Grizzly Adams Haggerty is the alcoholic Vietnam vet Santa saddled with
the responsibility of saving the human race from naked, malformed, perverted
elf creatures summoned by Hitlers ancient surviving homies. These nauseating,
animalistic beasts look like skinned muppets, sneak peeks at middle-aged ladies
in bubble baths and take every opportunity to tear out the nearest throat. Join us
for this scum-blazing, never-on-DVD Christmas maelstrom of black magic, white
power, and unanticipated incestuous cheer! (Zack)
CHOOSE YOUR OWN PANCAKE XVI
SL 11/27
Its time again for CHOOSE YOUR OWN PANCAKE where you, the viewer, get to pick
a movie for Master Pancake to mock, and then we make it up right there on the
spot! Just bring the DVD of your choice, Master Pancake will narrow it down to 10
favorites, then the audience will vote on which of those they want to see mocked.
Be prepared to give a short speech in defense of your movie. The audience has fnal
say. Previous winners include: Tip Toes, White Comanche, Logans Run, Left Behind,
Face/Of, and Batman (89)! What will be the pick this time? Its up to you! CYOP
is always a fun night, with lots of audience participation and the thrill of seeing a

Repertory Revival is the heart of everything we strive for at the Alamo. On these pages youll fnd a collection of signature series, each of them dedicated to bringing back
diferent types of flms and presenting them on screen with the best possible presentation. From Girlie Night to Zzang!!!, there is defnitely something for every movie lover,
and if thats not you then why are you wasting your time reading a list of programming at a movie theater?
REPERTORY REVIVAL
HOWARD THE DUCK
Zzang!!!: HOWARD THE DUCK
Dir. Willard Huyck, 1986, 110 min, PG, 35mm
RZ 11/13
Howard the Duck burst into two-dimensional existence in 1973 and became an
unlikely star of the Marvel Comics universe, gaining such a mighty following that
the fowl-mouthed freak was somehow entered into the real-life 1976 presidential
campaign. A decade later, Hollywood inexplicably pumped tens of millions of
dollars into a big budget blockbuster that ended up not busting many blocks, but
has since built a tremendous fan base. With the recent passing of longtime comics
legend (and Howard the Duck artist) Gene Colan, we pay 35mm tribute to one of
historys fnest waterfowl. Admittedly, Colan hated this George Lucas-produced,
big budget, efects-laden barnstormer...but hey, so did the critics! We dont care!
Howards the best damn talking duck in the annals of cinema and were proud to
salute the man who gave him life. Waaauuugghhh! (Zack Carlson)
Girlie Night: WHEN HARRY MET SALLY
Dir. Rob Reiner, 1989, 96 min, R, 35mm
LC 11/2 : RZ 11/8, 11/15 : VL 11/30
For me, the real question of WHEN HARRY MET SALLY isnt Will sex ruin a
friendship? The big question is actually, Why cant this movie be my life? Sure,
it takes Sally an hour and a half to order a sandwich, and Harry is a bit of a talker,
but together, these two share one of the greatest love stories in cinematic history.
The witty banter! The New York autumn! The classy Harry Connick Jr. soundtrack!
Dont even get me started on the old couples talking about how they frst met,
because even after a hundred viewings, I still tear up over nine extra foors. This
Rob Reiner and Nora Ephron masterpiece takes romance to the next, hilarious
level, and well celebrate (and envy) it at Girlie Night. Pull on your days of the
week underpants, add some pepper to your paprikash and lets all have what shes
having! (Sarah Pitre)
Cinema Club: SECONDS with Wiley Wiggins
Dir. John Frankenheimer, 106 min, 35mm
RZ 11/27
At each installment of Cinema Club we invite a guest expert or enthusiast to introduce
a classic flm and join Alamo programmers and the audience in a group discussion
after the flm. SECONDS is the capper of John Frankenheimers great trilogy of 60s
classics of Cold War alienation and paranoia. The story sounds like a Twilight Zone
episode: an unsatisfed middle-aged man undergoes a shadowy rejuvenation, and
becomes young, handsome, successful Rock Hudson. But theres something amiss
and no one can be trusted... SECONDS is the most experimental Hollywood flm of the
60s. Clearly before its time, it was aggressively hated by many at the time, but it has
gone on to become a cult favorite and a recognized classic. Cinematographer James
Wong Howe may be the real hero of SECONDS. One of Hollywoods top cameramen for
over 40 years at the time this flm was made, he brought mastery and distinction to
the flm, as well as a surprising gift for experimentation. We are thrilled to welcome
actor, writer and all-around flm lover Wiley Wiggins to the Alamo for this screening.

REPERTORY REVIVAL
WHITE CHRISTMAS
Dir. Michael Curtiz, 1954, 120 min, Digital Restoration
SL 12/5-12/8
New Digital Restoration of the Hollywood classic. Bring the family!
The darling of musical cinema Irving Berlin plus Bing Crosby, the housewifes
favourite big-eyed boy? A match made in heaven. The big surprise is - its even better
than it promised to be. This eagerly awaited musical is essentially a buddy flm. Well
sort of, its certainly got two buddies in it, but its also a love story, a Christmas fable,
and a vehicle to hang some exceptionally catchy hits on. Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby)
and Phil Paris (Danny Kaye) meet during the Second World War and become frm
friends. After getting demobilized they team up to become hot property as a song
and dance duo ripping up the nightspots with their own brand of feel-good hits. After
fve years of rolling success they need a holiday and cruise of to a New England
skiing resort in the company of two comely sisters, Betty (Rosemary Clooney) and
Vera (Vera-Ellen). They arrive to fnd the place nearly bankrupt, as there has been
no snow for over a year. The local top man is their old army boss General Waverly
(Dean Jagger), and sure enough our two heroes wade in to help their old comrade and
organise a beneft concert. But can they save the resort? (Matt Ford, BBC)
Girlie Night: LOVE ACTUALLY
Dir. Richard Curtis, 2003, 135 min, R
RZ 12/6, 12/13, 12/20 : LC 12/14
Forget about A Christmas Story or Charlie Brown. Heck, forget about Baby Jesus!
LOVE ACTUALLY is basically the whole reason I celebrate Christmas. For, without this
masterpiece of a romantic comedy, there would be no love in this cold, cruel world.
Plus, wed all be stuck singing Jingle Bells instead of everyones favorite carol,
Christmas Is All Around. I challenge you to fnd one other movie that combines
Colin Firth, an adorable little boy with a dead mom, the British Prime Minister, the
porn industry, Mr. Bean, a washed up rock star and a kid in an octopus costume into
something that makes me cry tears of shimmering, golden joy into my mug of spiced
wine. This flm TROUNCES all other holiday flms in the squee category. I mean, ask
me how many times Ive rewound and watched the scene when Mark shows up at
Juliets door and shows her a sign that says, To me, you are perfect. Because OMG I
WANT THAT!!!! Join us for this very special holiday edition of Girlie Night, where youre
allowed (and expected) to squeal, sigh and grab your neighbors arm when Colin Firth
fnally proposes to that Portugese lady. (Sarah Pitre)
Zzang!!!: GREMLINS 2 w/Joe Dante in person!
Dir. Joe Dante, 1990, 106 min, PG-13, 35mm
RZ 12/4
No ones denying that the original GREMLINS is a top notch holiday monster movie
but I gotta say: GREMLINS 2 takes the Christmas cake and splatters it against the wall.
Dantes long-awaited sequel revives all the man-trampling insanity of the frst flm,
multiplies it by ten thousand and sprinkles it with glowing chunks of sheer chaos.
Mogwai-lovin gremlin-wreckers Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates and the great Dick
Miller are back, now with a front row seat for the creatures takeover of a New York
City high-rise. The diminutive terror tornadoes have upgraded to go with their fancy
new digs, among them a giant tarantula beast, a bookish intellectual, an electricity
creature and many, many, MANY more. Terror legend Christopher Lee is on hand to
drop some mad science on the wee maniacs, but nothing can slow their absolute
ascent into the annals of anarchistic madcappery! Join us for an extremely rare
35mm screening of the fastest, wildest, and hilarious-est assault on mankind since
the invention of the banana peel: GREMLINS 2! ZZANG!!! (Zack Carlson)
27 November - December 2011 Schedule of Special Events - for complete calendar and tickets visit www.drafthouse.com
Digital Classics: ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE
Dir. Frank Capra, 1946, 2K Digital
LC 12/12-12/15 : VL 12/19-12/22
High Defnition Digital Restoration!
Jimmy Stewart plays banker, family man and general mensch George Bailey. Hes a
clever man with big dreams, but his ambitions are always thwarted and who reaches
the end of his rope memorably. The flm captures this intense internal and external
confict perfectly, and all the credit belongs to Stewart, whose career-topping
performance here is too often overlooked in all the holiday merriment. Stewart goes
from compassionate to overwhelmed to drained in a fury he never repeated. When
the assistance of an Angel shows him what life would have been like if he had never
been born, Bailey sees that sometimes sacrifce has its own rewards. Frank Capras
Yuletide yarn is touching, and will bring you to tears for a good portion of its two-plus
hour running time. With its perfect winter setting, good cheer, and strong family and
community message, this flm is the quintessential representation of the Christmas
Spirit in the cinema, and it is meant to be enjoyed over and over again.
REPERTORY REVIVAL
AMERICAN: THE BILL HICKS STORY
Dir. Matt Harlock, Paul Thomas, 2009, 102 min,
VL 12/16, 12/17
The greatest comic of his generation. Took names. Kicked ass. Changed the game.
Help us celebrate his birthday with this special presentation of the ultimate Bill Hicks
movie. Three years in the making, AMERICAN: THE BILL HICKS STORY brings the tale
of one of modern cultures most iconic heroes to the big screen. Much more than a
comedian, Bill Hicks was and still is an inspiration to millions. His timeless comedy
tackled the contradictions of America and modern life head on. But his unique gift
was to tease apart the essence of religion, the dangers of unbridled government
power and the double standards inherent in much of modern society, using nothing
but his hilarious ideas and the uncompromising observational style that continues
to resonate with successive generations. Like many who have a strong sense of their
place in history, Hicks left a large unseen legacy; his collection of video recordings
and hundreds of photographs and these became the starting point for this feature-
length animated documentary.
Cinema Cocktails: (The Original) OCEANS ELEVEN
Dir. Lewis Milestone, 1960, 127 min, 35mm
RZ 12/12, 12/18
One for all, and all for kicks. The original Rat Pack are back in this rarely screened
classic of crime, humor and, most of all, drinking. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and
Sammy Davis Jr. must have been doing something right, because over 50 years later,
they are still the undisputed kings of Vegas. While Stephen Soderberghs remake
takes the casino heist plot at least semi-seriously, the only thing the Rat Pack
seemed to care about was having a good time with a few martinis and the company
of such prime time playmates as Angie Dickinson and Shirley MacLaine. Grab a cold,
cold martini and join the Mount Rushmore of cool with the most awesome partiers
in the history of partying.
SKINEMAX: WILD THINGS
Dir. John McNaughton, 1998, 108min
RZ 12/8
SKINEMAX, our tribute to late-night erotic thrillers, will take you back to a gratuitous
era when erotic encounters happened exclusively under neon lights to the sounds of
smooth jazz. Get sucked into a world of forbidden passions, sexual betrayals and
the unending tribulations of menaced talk-radio hosts. To keep things from getting
too awkward well be presenting all shows in HECKLEVISION, where your steamy,
live text-heckles appear on-screen alongside the movie. We kick of the series with
WILD THINGS, the sleazy story of kissing couple Denise Richard and Neve Campbell
framing their high-school guidance counselor (Matt Dillon) for rape. But things get
complicated once police detective Kevin Bacon and his clearly visible penis blow
the case wide open uncovering layers of lies, betrayals and confounding plot twists
involving Bill Murray in a neck brace. Arrive early for an all-erotic preshow featuring a
shirtless saxophone player LIVE IN THE THEATER! This is a night of torrid cinema sure
to leave you breathless, satisfed and drenched in cheap perfume. (Tommy Swenson)
Celluloid Handbag:
WHOS AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?
Dir. Mike Nichols, 1966, 131 min, 35mm
RZ 12/14
The holidays are upon us like a she dog in heat, ladies and gentlepigs, and what
better way to crawl through them than with a painful, burnin shot of some ELIZABETH
TAYLOR and RICHARD BURTON in one of the most liquor ridden hellish (and gorgeous)
nights of ya entire life! We all know what its like ta be trapped in a house over the
holidayswantin ta take a gun to some relatives head, needin ta smoke several
cartons a cigarettes while makin love ta Jack Daniels in every corner of tha room.
Well, CELLULOID HANDBAG and REBECCA HAVEMEYER wanna get ya all prepped for it
with our favorite flm of all time, the one and only WHOS AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?
Edward Albee was drunk when he wrote it, and I guarantee youll be as well when

High for the Holidays: THE HOLY MOUNTAIN
Dir. Alejandro Jodorowsky, 1973, NR, 114 min, 35mm
RZ 12/26, 12/27
Alejandro Jodorowsky followed up his intense cult hit EL TOPO with this even more
intense meditation on planetary relations, black ritual, and general grotesqueries.
THE HOLY MOUNTAIN follows a Christlike protagonist as he joins a footless, handless
dwarf to perform in a village for tourist dollars. The man then leaves town, gets
himself involved with an Alchemist who can turn excrement into gold, and fnally
launches into a series of astrological visions that result in a mind-numbing tornado
of satirical surrealism. Jodorowsky is a master of weird, but his flms never feel
superfcial or arbitrary. He is a visionary artist in the truest sense, and THE HOLY
MOUNTAIN, while not the underground sensation that EL TOPO is, may very well be his
most expressive and honest work. If you like your high to be tempered with a lot of
fooring WTF, this is the picture for you.
REPERTORY REVIVAL
BEERFEST
Dir. Jay Chandrasekhar, 2006, 110 min, R
RZ 12/28, 12/30
There is nothing quite like seeing this neo-classic hop-soaked comedy at the Alamo
Drafthouse. Grab a bucket of cold brew and watch the Broken Lizard boys compete
in the most insane versions of quarters, beer pong and straight-up chugging ever
committed to flm. (John Gross)
High for the Holidays: ENTER THE VOID
DIR. GASPAR NO, 2009, NR, 161 MIN, 35MM
RZ 12/18, 12/19, 12/25
Gaspar Noes ENTER THE VOID is a visionary thrill ride thats riveted audiences at
the Cannes, Toronto, Sundance and SXSW flm festivals. At Cannes, Manohla Dargis
of The New York Times called it an exceptional work... the work of an artist whos
trying to show us something we havent seen before. Oscar and his sister Linda
are recent arrivals in Tokyo. Oscars a small time drug dealer, and Linda works as
a nightclub stripper. One night, Oscar is caught up in a police bust and shot. As
he lies dying, his spirit, faithful to the promise he made his sister that he would
never abandon her, refuses to leave the world of the living. It wanders through the
city, his visions growing evermore nightmarish. Past, present and future merge in
a hallucinatory maelstrom. Nathaniel Brown and Paz de la Huerta star in a visceral
journey set against the thumping, neon club scene of Tokyo, which hurls the viewer
into an astonishing trip through life, death, and the universally wonderful and
horrible moments in between.
Asian Invasion: DRUNKEN TAI CHI
Dir. Yuen Woo-ping, 1984, 91 min
RZ 12/18
Join us for a special High For The Holidays edition of Asian Invasion. Donnie Yen,
in his frst flm, joins Yuen Woo-ping and the Yuen clan in a jaw-dropping martial arts
classic. When Yens family is killed by an assassin, he is left to wander alone. Soon
he is taken in by a wine-swilling Tai Chi master. Just to prevent any confusion, this is
the ass-kicking variety of Tai Chi, not the hackey-sack-hippies-in-the-park kind. Yen
learns Drunken Tai Chi and faces of against the men who have wronged his family.
As is par for the course with the Yuen clan (DRUNKEN WU TANG, DREADNAUGHT),
this movie is insane, and the kung fu is absurdly entertaining. Dont miss this rare
presentation of this absurdly fun kung fu comedy. (Lars)

Horror Remix: Thanksgiving
LC 11/16
When director Eli Roth created his faux trailer Thanksgiving for GRINDHOUSE,
he claimed his inspiration was to fll a void. All other holidays had at least one
80s slasher degrading it. All holidays, but Thanksgiving. Thankfully, Mr. Roth was
dead wrong. There are actual two 80s Thanksgiving slashers; HOME SWEET HOME
(1981) and BLOOD RAGE (1983). These flms have plenty of underrated and bizarre
moments that are going to get the Horror Remix love they deserve. We will be
flling out the show with a movie that isnt set at Thanksgiving- but DOES feature a
wacked-out killer turkey- BLOOD FREAK (1972)! This one-of-a-kind mess-terpiece

One of Jim Hensons most memorable creations! Christmas is approaching in
Frogtown Hollow, and Emmet Otter and his Ma hope to buy gifts for each other.
Unfortunately, Emmet doesnt make enough from the odd jobs he does, and Ma
doesnt make enough as a laundress. They decide to compete in the Frogtown
Hollow Talent Contest in order to win money, but Ma will have to hock Emmets tool
chest to buy a costume, and Emmet will have to put a hole in Mas washtub for his
band! Kermit the Frog hosts this classic Muppet musical Christmas tale, based on
the book by Russell and Lillian Hoban, with original songs from master tunesmith
Paul Williams. (Zack Carlson)
Invincible Czars- NUTCRACKER
SL 12/9
You cant throw a can of Lonestar in this town without hitting a band that claims
to be talented and unique, but few have the jingle-chestnuts to step up and
craft such an exceptional and original score to a well-loved classic as Austins
own Invincible Czars. In what has become a holiday tradition, the Czars have re-
imagined Tchaikovskys original Nutcracker with twists of heavy metal fret-tapping
and free-jazz convulsions, with country waltzes and jazzy shufes to taste. The
result is a fresh sound suitable for a sugarplum fairy to totally trip out to. The
musical language of their piece encompasses arena rock, classical arrangements,
stereophonic grooves, spacey klezmer, circusy polka and overall Beefheart
complexity. The Czars blend genres efortlessly and send them all hurtling back in
a frenetic, yet sophisticated arrangement. This is classical music like youve never
heard before and a great way to get into the holiday spirit! (John Gross)

participatory discussion in a formal, moderated context, and the opportunity
to participate in the recreation of Ancient rituals. A typical Dionysium show
will feature a lecture, a declamation, a drinking song, a flm or live musical
performance, an appeal to Dionysus, a fction-writing contest, and plenty of strong
drink. But the heart of every Dionysium is the debate, pitting two experts against
each other in toe-to-toe parliamentary combat. Dionysium debate resolutions have

Dir. Gary Nelson, 1973, 95 min, G, 35mm
SL 11/26
There are two basic truths that will keep every family therapist in business until the
end of time: kids are ungrateful jerks and parents are clueless dweebs. But what
if some kink in the universe allowed them to switch lives and see what its like on
the other side? FREAKY FRIDAY was the frst of many, many movies to explore the
body swap genre. In this iteration, Jodie Foster plays Annabel Andrews, your typical
sulky teen dealing with a typical nagging mom (Barbara Harris). One Friday the
13th, while simultaneously grousing about how unappreciated and misunderstood
they each feel, Annabelle and her mom magically switch places. What happens?
You guessed it. Hijinx! Poor old mom has to go back to school, give up smoking and
lead the waterskiing team to victory. Annabelle has to learn to drive, cook and be
a good wifeto her dad. Hopefully the Andrews have their therapist on speed dial.

Billy Wilders 1960 masterpiece THE APARTMENT, a brilliantly written, fast-paced,
heartbreakingly hilarious adventure of a poor schlub (a young, bumbling Jack
Lemmon) who just cant steer things right to fall into the good graces of the most
wonderful woman in town (a young, unbelievably charming Shirley MacLaine). In
his way are an innumerable number of comic obstacles, including the great Fred

vacation with his wife when he suddenly falls under a spell. At night, when the
streets begin to empty, he encounters an intellectuals fever dream; an entire
ghost world of history and art and life emerges from the ether for his curiousity to
investigate. On the cobblestone streets of Paris he is transported into the 1920s,
and while there he meets the idols of his imagination; Ernest Hemingway, Zelda and
F. Scott Fitzgerald, Salvador Dal, Picaso, Matisse, Buuel are living the bohemian
lifestyle that Gil has always adored. He becomes torn between his days with his

AND IT FEELS SO GOOD: COMEDIES OF REMARRIAGE
Nov. 22 Dec 20, 2011
Screwball comedies were built on the idea of men and women at war with each
other: seduction by way of verbal sparring and improbably sophisticated pratfalls.
It was boy meets girl, boy and girl bump heads till the last reel dtente. Some of the
very best screwball comedies tweaked that premise by beginning at the end with
a divorced pair (or soon to be divorced pair) pushed back into each others paths to
parry and thrust once more. The philosopher Stanley Cavell coined a term for the
subgenre the comedy of remarriage, he called it and while its heyday was the
late Thirties, the idea of ex-lovers who drive each other crazy, and crazy in love, is
eternal. (Kimberley Jones, Austin Chronicle, AFS Guest Curator)

CARAVAGGIO
Dir. Derek Jarman, 1986, 93 min, NR
SL 11/8
Forever dallying with the buttons of British censors, experimental flmmaker Derek
Jarman had already shocked audiences with his flm about gay icon St. Sebastian
(1976), the frst (the only?) flm with subtitles in Latin, and his audacious, if
culturally skewed, version of Englands punk heyday (JUBILEE, 1978). But frst
and foremost Jarman was an artist, so it is no surprise that he was inspired by
one of the most homoerotic artists of the Baroque period, Michelangelo Amerighi
da Caravaggio, a worthy successor to that other, earlier Michelangelo. Notorious
for profigate living and ambi-sexual relationships, Caravaggio was nonetheless a
remarkable painter who used light creatively, made skin glow, and crafted unusual
compositions which seem like hyper-sensual photographs. Caravaggio, whose
barely documented life still remains the subject of conjecture and fction, enjoyed
the company of the outcasts of society, whom he used as models for historic,
religious, and wealthy fgures, similar to the interests of Italian flmmaker Pier
Paolo Pasolini. But Jarman refuses to leave his characters trapped in the late 16th
century and allows them accessories of the 20th century and its accompanying
music. In this faux bio-pic the images are powerful and occasionally beautiful,
time is extremely fuid, the story is almost inconsequential, and the flmmakers
enjoyment is evident throughout.
WITTGENSTEIN
Dir. Derek Jarman, 1993, 75 min, NR, 35mm
SL 11/15
Derek Jarman turns his superbly expressionistic lens toward the life, real and
imagined, of 20th century powerhouse of philosophy, Ludwig Wittgenstein.
Devoting a flm to a genius who examined the nature and limits of language
is a rather audacious undertaking, but Jarman was never deterred by any kind of
limits himself. He sketches Wittgensteins life from his birth in Vienna, on through
events during World War II, to his settling down at Cambridge, as a provocative
professor and friend to philosopher Bertrand Russell and economist John Maynard
Keynes. A love of Carmen Mirandas famboyant musicals certainly gives an idea of
his inclinations, but other than a creative relationship with a man who was killed
during World War I and a later love afair, Wittgenstein was generally frustrated
in love. As if to balance the profigacy of Caravaggio as a subject, Jarman seems
to have no less enjoyed exploring the life of a quieter man. WITTGENSTEIN will
be accompanied by Derek Jarmans autobiographical documentary, GLITTERBUG
(1994, 60 min).

Largely a dramatic actor up until this point, a gun-shy Cary Grant ofered his bosses

Cary Grant comic persona silky, sophisticated, mostly unfappable, and utterly
charming was born with this role. He and Irene Dunne are irresistible as soon-to-

Claudette Colbert helped launch screwball comedy in Capras IT HAPPENED

alternate, exalted plane of lunacy. The Weenie King, the Ale and Quail Club, and
the Princess Centimillia are a few of the chorus members accompanying Colberts
Gerry Jefers on her fight to Palm Beach to get a quickie divorce from her devoted
but down-on-his-luck husband (played by Sturges favorite Joel McCrea).
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
Dir. Michel Gondry, 2004, 108 min, R, 35mm
SL 12/20
In the future, the pains of divorce may not be necessary just have your memories
erased, or can it really be that easy?
Can you even call it a comedy when a movie opens with Jim Carrey crying, Beck
moping in harmony on the soundtrack? Or when a major plot point involves
a memory-erasing machine designed to obliterate all recollection of an ex?
ETERNAL SUNSHINE may be the darkest iteration yet of lovers who part, only to be
pulled back together again, but its also a funny, tender, and endlessly inventive
examination of why we love who we love, even when we know we shouldnt.
