IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER

24 School Holiday - No Classes Nov 1

From the ES Administration

Dear Elementary School Parents, Pressing Pause on our Learning This week brings us to the end of our first quarter and over twelve weeks of learning in the Elementary School. It marks an appropriate time for us to press pause and reflect as a community on where we have come from since August. For new families to ISM, you have been through a transition phase into a new school, a new country and a new culture. For others who have been here longer, this quarter has heralded a new grade, new teacher and new friendships. Part of the learning process is providing suitable time for reflection. This can look very different, dependent upon the grade and the understanding, but operates on a number of central premises: Reflection and metacognition are central to teaching & learning Students think in different ways Students reflecting on their own learning enables them to select strategies which best suit them, which then supports them in setting their own goals Thinking skills can be taught As teachers, we aim to model thinking and metacognition for our students, such that it becomes natural for our students and part of their own learning cycle. We also use this as a central tenant of all our teaching, in order to be reflective about our practice and constantly look for better ways to guide and facilitate our students learning. Hopefully as a family, you get the chance to press pause over the next couple of weeks and enjoy some time together. Pezzettino This morning at our second ES assembly for the year, we had the pleasure of sharing a story by Leo Lionni, called Pezzettino, which means little piece in Italian. Pezzettino is small in stature and is surrounded by

others who are big and daring and wonderful. As such, he is on a quest to find out where he belongs. After asking the one-who-runs, the strong one, the swimming one, the one-on the mountain, the flying-one, and finally the wise-one, he is sent to the Island of Wham for the answer. He discovers that like everyone, he too is made up of little pieces and he is actually himself, rather than a little piece of someone else. We hope that over the past months, your children have continued on their journey to discover who they are and that ISM has helped in their journey. Whilst we are all little pieces that help to make ISM a community, we are also unique little pieces that are very different for all the right reasons and that these differences are a cause to celebrate. Have a wonderful holiday.

From the PE Department

For those families going away this coming holiday the ES PE department are planning another bulletin board to showcase all the ways our children (along with parents too) are physically active outside of PE lessons. Please send/e-mail me a photo of you and/or your children being active together. You can place photos in an envelope and send to school with your child addressed to Amanda Pekin, Elementary School Physical Education or simply email me your photos after the break. We are looking for any photos where adults and children are being physically active! Recommended guidelines for children are one hour of physical activity per day as a minimum.

From the Art Department

ES Art Department needs your junk! We have been so busy creating amazing art this semester that we have used up a lot of the resources you sent at the beginning of the year. We would hugely appreciate your help in providing any of the flowing items: Boxes, toilet and kitchen roll tubes, newspapers and magazines, egg cartons, yogurt pots, polystyrene and plastic takeaway boxes, old and even broken toys and dolls, cds, wrapping paper, ribbons, fabric, beads and unwanted costume jewelry, old shoes and bags. These items can be brought to room 1189-1191 at anytime or you can get your children to bring them in with them to their art class. If you do not have any items now we hope you will collect them for us and bring them in the future. Many thanks for you continued support,

Typherix is a vaccine which helps prevent typhoid fever, an infectiousillness caused by a type of bacteria called Salmonella typhi. This vaccine can be given to both adults and children aged 2 years and over. Typherix contains a small part of the bacterium which causes typhoid fever. This is not infectious and cannot make you ill. When you are given the vaccine it will trigger the bodys immune system to prepare itself to protect against typhoid fever in the future. Typherix will only prevent disease caused by the bacteriumSalmonella typhiand not against salmonella bacteria that can cause food poisoning or gastroenteritis.Since the bacterium is present in the bowel movement (motion), the infection can occur in any country, but it more commonly occurs in places or countries with poor personal or public hygiene.
