Orchestrating change

shangO shakes up ip telephOny service management

Service orchestration can be a complex and costly issue to solve, and the more services that are added to a service provider’s portfolio, the more geometrically complex service provisioning and management become. In most cases, providers looking to aggregate disparate services and systems are forced into the swivel-chair

approach, a process that is far from cost effective and difficult to scale. Fortunately, cloud-based services are providing a game-changing solution to these traditional IT restraints. Answering a call from its customers to centralize their front end and back end systems into a uni- fied environment, StarView Solutions, a provider of wholesale telco services and enablement software, recently unveiled Shango, a new cloud-based service activation and management platform. For years now, service orchestration features and functionality have been available to StarView’s existing customers, as a way to optimize and manage StarView’s telco services and hosted applications. But with the formalization and delivery of the robust and disruptive Shango

unified communications solutions, it is a multi-tenant platform that allows complete service modularity of the core services necessary to provision and manage just about all aspects of being a VoIP service provider. Shango also is a completely agnostic and standards- based solution, so it integrates with most commercially available cloud-based hosted infrastructures and is an ideal means to provide API management and consolida- tion, says the company. All the while, with Shango’s ever-growing number of integrated applications and APIs, its users have ac- cess to a marketplace of services (think Jamcracker), including end-to-end telephone number management, inbound number routing, wholesale billing and rating, softswitch provisioning and deployment and an end- point provisioning server, all of which can be easily and

quickly deployed to a customer base. CLECs, MSOs, ISPs, resellers and other types of service providers and distributors can integrate their own billing platform or use Shango’s. Likewise, they can bring their own SIP trunking capability or utilize Shango’s SIP trunking platform. Indeed, as part of its built-in cloud service delivery platform, Shango offers service-ready SIP trunking and hosted unified communications platforms that can be hosted in the cloud or deployed within an existing net- work, under the customer’s brand. The upshot is quick delivery of these popular IP telephony services, all man- aged through Shango’s intuitive interface, which can be pushed down to the end user. “With Shango’s flexibility and customizable work- flows and user interface,” says Walsh, “we make it easy for you to rapidly scale and maximize margins.” According to the company, by using the Shango Platform, service providers and distributors improve provisioning and service activation times by up to 90 percent, while significantly lowering capital expendi- tures by up to 75 percent.

sale customers now can manage and streamline not only StarView services but also all the disparate number of third-par- ty systems and cloud-based services they have in place or will be adding.

“Our customers have consistently told us that one of the greatest values they get from do- ing business with us is our ability to deliver service management tools they can easily use to provision and manage the multiple solutions they purchase from us,” says David Walsh, president and founder of StarView Solutions. “It was natural for us to extend the solution, to incorporate their non-StarView systems, as well.” Whereas most OSS reside within a service pro- vider’s network, Shango is a type of “cloud OSS” built specifically for the telco domain, complete with all the inherent benefits of a true cloud service. It acts as an overlay sitting across several different architectures and platforms, bridging those disparate systems together “all the way down to the switch level; all the way down to the device level,” says Walsh. Formally introduced this September at the CVx event at IT EXPO, in StarView’s hometown of Austin, Texas, Shango pushes service activation and manage- ment into the cloud and orchestrates different types of applications into one intuitive interface that makes provisioning and management easier than ever before.
