Established Goals: Illinois State Standards 5th Grade Social Studies
STATE GOAL 16: Understand events, trends, individuals and movements shaping the history of Illinois, the United States and other nations.
16.A.2b Compare different stories about a historical figure or event and analyze differences in the portrayals and perspectives they present. 16.A.2c Ask questions and seek answers by collecting and analyzing data from historic documents, images and other literary and non-literary sources. 16.B.2b (US) Identify major causes of the American Revolution and describe the con-sequences of the Revolution through the early national period, including the roles of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin.

Understandings:
Students will understand that A revolution is a complete change in political thinking Several different leadership figures had his own reasons for pursuing a revolution A thoughtful leader will weigh the benefits of a radical change in government against its costs? The Declaration of Independence is a living document with ideas that are still in use today

Essential Questions:
What is a revolution? What factors lead to a revolution? What are the advantages and disadvantages of a revolution? How does a persons perspective affect their decision to initiate a revolution?

Student will know


Key terms: revolution, independence, Sons of Liberty, acts, patriot, representation Famous patriots and their reasons for wanting revolution: Sam Adams, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, Nathan Hale, Thomas Paine, George Washington. The costs of revolution: monetary, life, sacrifice, retaliation, neighbor against neighbor. The events that incited patriots to act: the Stamp Act, the closing of the Boston Harbor, the Intolerable Acts, taxation without representation.

Student will be able to


Define key terms. Analyze key reasons why patriots were angry with British laws. Interpret the reasons for independence that were included in the Declaration. Compare and contrast the reasons why patriots and Tories were for or against revolution. Synthesize the information they gather about each patriot into a passage that explains his reasoning that can be applied to a mock interview. Interpret how the Declaration of Independence can be used to support current protests by citizens today.
