Recessed downlights.
According to a recently published report by the U.S.
Department of Energy,* there are more than 800 million
recessed downlights installed in residential and commercial
buildings. The DOE report identifed LED recessed downlights
as having the greatest energy saving potential of all recessed
lights they studied. If all recessed downlights were converted to
LED recessed downlights, the estimated energy saving would
be equivalent to the annual consumption of nearly thirteen
1000 MW electric power plants. This represents the annual
electricity consumption of 6.7 million typical U.S. households.

To satisfy these unique lighting needs, SYLVANIA offers Chain Systems as a solution
for putting LED lighting into areas of all shapes and sizes.
THE SYSTEM SOLUTION

A simple design with a multitude of uses, the Chain products
consist of LEDs mounted on circuit boards that are then con-
nected to one another with fexible wires. This continuous chain
of LEDs provides a fexible light source that can be placed in
areas where traditional light sources dont ft. Some of the light-
ing applications where chain LED light sources can be used are:
Signage.
Used as an indirect or backlighting source, the Chain products
are designed to be easily installed in channels where shaping
the product into complex contours is important to eliminate dark
spots on the face of the letters. Available in a variety of colors,
chain products are designed to match the most popular acrylic
face colors used in sign design.
Cove lighting.
Chain products can be installed in straight and curved applica-
tions, such as cove lighting. The fexible wire connections
between the boards allow designers to achieve different visual
effects by spacing the boards at different intervals. Wider spac-
ing gives a festoon lighting effect while closer spacing provides a
continuous lighting effect. Designers use cove lighting to accent
the architectural features as well as to set the mood in the area.
To support this, the Chain products support not only mono-
chrome colors (e.g. red, blue, etc.) but also come in warm and
cool white colors as well as color changing.
Lighting of irregular shaped spaces and features.
In the past, lighting areas with straight or simple curves required
specialists to bend neon tubing on site. This is no longer the
case with SYLVANIA Chain products.
The SYLVANIA Chain product line consists of a number of
different solutions with a variety of output intensities and colors.
In addition to our standard warranty, SYLVANIA offers a two-year
labor warranty on signage installations. The products commonly
used in signage are listed in the UL Sign Components Manual,
typically known as the SAM manual.

GLOSSARY
Ampere A unit expressing the rate of fow of
electric current. (See Current).
Binning A systematic process of dividing LEDs
into smaller subgroups with a similar brightness
and color distribution. OSRAM SYLVANIA tightly
controls the LEDs used in its modules to
minimize color and brightness variations.
Black Body (Planckian radiator) An ideal
thermal radiator whose SPD curve is defned by
its temperature in Kelvin and whose color
coordinates lie exactly on the Planckian curve.
Candela (cd) The unit of measure indicating
luminous intensity (candlepower) of a light source
in a specifc direction; any given light source will
have many different intensities, depending upon
the direction considered.
Chromaticity The aspect of color that includes
consideration of its dominant wavelength and
purity.

and exchange of information among its member
countries on all matters relating to the science
and art of lighting.
Colormixing The process of mixing light output
from red, green and blue LEDs to generate
virtually any color. A combination of all three
primary colors (red, green and blue) appears
white to the human eye. Combinations of two
primary colors produces secondary colors
magenta, cyan and yellow. Also see RGB.
Color Rendering Index (CRI) The Color
Rendering Index measures the effect a light
source has on the perceived color of objects and
surfaces. High CRI light makes virtually all colors
look natural and vibrant. Low CRI causes some
colors to appear washed out or even to take on
a completely different hue.
Color Temperature Color temperature, which
is measured in Kelvin, indicates whether a light
source has a warm, midrange or cool color
appearance. Warm light sources have a low
color temperature (2000-3000K) and feature
more light in the red/orange/yellow range.
Light with a higher color temperature (>5000K)
features more blue light and is referred to as
cool.
Constant voltage LED modules LED modules
that are driven by power supplies generating a
constant DC voltage output. These modules may
be dimmed using PWM controllers that maintain
the DC voltage level constant but change the
duty cycle of the drive pulse.
Constant current LED modules LED modules
that are driven by power supplies generating a
constant DC output current. These modules may
be dimmed using PWM controllers generating
pulse outputs with a constant DC current
amplitude but a varying duty cycle.
Correlated Color Temperature (CCT)
A specifcation of the color appearance of a
lamp, relating its color to that of a reference
source, black body radiator, heated to a
particular temperature, measured in degrees
Kelvin (K); CCT generally measures the warmth
or coolness of light source appearance.
Current A measure of the rate of fow of
electricity, expressed in amperes (A).
Effcacy The rate at which a light source is able
to convert power (watts) into light (lumens),
expressed in lumens per watt (LPW or lm/W).

Energy A measure of work done by an electrical
system over a given period of time, often
expressed in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
Footcandle (fc) A unit of illuminance equal to 1
lumen per square foot.
Frequency The number of times per second
that an alternating current system reverses from
positive to negative and back to positive,
expressed in cycles per second or hertz (Hz).
Grounding An LED power supply with a ground
input or a metal housing should always be
grounded. The grounding helps assure safety
and acceptable EMI/RFI performance. Always
install power supplies in accordance with local
and national electric codes.
Hi-brightness LEDs OSRAM SYLVANIA defnes
hi-brightness LEDs as having a typical lumen
output of 1 to 10 lumens per LED (except for blue).
Hi-fux LEDs OSRAM SYLVANIA defnes hi-fux
LEDs as having a typical lumen output greater
than 15 lumens per LED (except for blue).
Hertz (Hz) A unit of frequency equal to one cycle
per second; see frequency.
Illuminance Light arriving at a surface,
expressed in lumens per unit area; 1 lumen per
square foot equals 1 footcandle, while 1 lumen
per square meter equals 1 lux.
LED (Light Emitting Diode) A semiconductor
device that converts electrical energy to visible
light.
LED module A combination of LEDs on a circuit
board. The LEDs may be arranged in a series or
in a combination of serial and parallel circuits.
The module may include electronic devices to
convert voltage to current. LED modules may be
driven with constant voltage or constant current
depending on the module design.
LED power supply An electronically stabilized
power supply that converts AC line voltage to DC
constant voltage or DC constant current drive for
the LED modules. DC LED power supplies
convert DC voltage from a battery source or
another power supply to the appropriate current
or voltage drive for the LED module.
Lens A glass or plastic element used in LEDs
and luminaires to change the direction and
control the distribution of light rays.
LPW Performance Lumens per Watt. The
number of lumens produced by a light source for
each watt of electrical power supplied. Also see
effcacy.
Lumen Depreciation The decrease in lumen
output of a light source over time. Also see
Service Life.
Lumens (lm) A unit of luminous fux; overall light
output; quantity of light, expressed in lumens. For
example, a dinner candle provides about 12
lumens and a 60-watt soft white incandescent
lamp provides about 840 lumens.
Luminaire A light fxture; the complete lighting
unit, including an LED light source, power supply,
wiring, diffuser and housing.
Luminance (L) Light refected in a particular
direction; the photometric quantity most closely
associated with brightness perception, measured
in units of luminous intensity (candelas) per unit
area (Square feet or square meters).
Pulse width modulation (PWM) In pulse width
modulation, the length of the pulse that is used
to deliver power to the LEDs is varied while the
current through the LEDs is maintained at the
same level as during full brightness. The variation
of the pulse width allows the LEDs intensity to
be varied from 100% down to 0%.
RGB Red, Green and Blue colors can be added
to generate virtually any color. Light output from
red, green and blue LEDs can be mixed to
generate specifc colors or color sequences.
RGB control schemes typically employ pulse
width modulation to dim one or more of the
primary colors. Also see Colormixing.
Service Life OSRAM SYLVANIA defnes the
service life of its LED modules as the period of
time after which the luminous fux output drops
to 50% of its initial value. The service life is
typically calculated at a Tc of 40C.

temperature test point on our LED modules.
