4. Probl em Defi nition/Background Probl em Statem ent Karst topography and related surface features allow unusually fast transport of surface waters into the groundwater system. To measure this effect and the potential for pollutants to travel unabated through the system we will monitor active springs for rises in temperature after rainfall, and for those with a temperature signal we will take grab samples after rain events to characterize the chemical and biological pollutants present in the spring water.

Intended Usag e of Data This data will be correlated with stratigraphy, surface features in the area, soils data, land spreading of septic waste and animal manure, septic systems, historic features (filled karst features, old homesteads that might indicate an abandoned well), and current chemical data from wells in the area. The patterns of all these variables will indicate potential areas of higher vulnerability for the groundwater resource. The spring data will help to confirm the other observational data.

Project/Task Description Gen eral Overview of Project We hope to better understand the nature of the karst topography in the vicinity of the City of Viroqua. We also hope to generate a vulnerability map that can be tested against well water quality data, Ground Electrical Resistivity data and this data of spring water quality.

Rational e for Sel ection of Sa mpli ng Sites

We are selecting sites in the vicinity of the City of Viroqua and City of Westby. This area was selected because of municipal, and county landfill well log data that will assist in characterization of the stratigraphy, reported private and public well contamination in this area, and known karst features on the landscape. The springs will be active year around, accessible physically and landowner permissions, and widely dispersed over the study area. This is a pilot study and of limited areal scope in an effort to assess which observations provide the most information for the purpose of determining vulnerability of groundwater resources.

7. Sa mpli ng Method Requireme nts

We will try to minimize the baseline samples by comparing the first two sample results with springhead sampling results in Hydrologic assessment of the Kickapoo Watershed, southwestern Wisconsin by Stephen J. Gaffield, Kenneth R.Bradbury, and KennethW. Potter (1998).
