Thermal Degradation of Sandwich Structures

Shufeng Zhang sz2g09@soton.ac.uk - School of Engineering Sciences Supervisors Professor Janice M. Barton , University of Southampton, UK Professor Ole Thybo Thomsen , Aalborg University, Denmark

Background, Motivation & Aim

Polymeric foam sandwich structures, which consist of low-strength flexible polymer foam cores and two stiff face sheets that are either made of composite laminated materials or metals, are being used widely in aerospace, naval, transportation and civil engineering industries, as shown Figure 1. However, polymeric foam core materials may experience significant changes in their properties in the operating range of temperatures of the structure. For example, PMI foams lose their heat distortion resistance at about 200, while PVC foams lose their stiffness and strength at about 80-100, as Figure 2.

Testing
Testing Apparatus consists of a servo hydraulic testing machine, thermal chamber(-100--500), thermal isolator, three 0r four point bending fixture, DIC cameras and computer as shown in Figure 3 . Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is mainly used here to measure strain of the specimen.

Objective: Develop a qualified experiment system to identify the extent of the degradation of polymeric foam sandwich structures. Understand how the mechanical property of foam cores and composite material face sheets varies with temperature, and their contribution to the degradation of sandwich structures. Methodology

Temperature Gradient It is also very important to research the thermal degradation of polymeric foam sandwich structure when it is under temperature gradient, which exists a lot in industry, as shown in Figure 5 .

Research Plan Design experiment apparatus, mainly about the fixture design for different kinds of specimen. Familiarization with DIC . Foam, Laminate Sheets and Sandwich Structure will all be tested, including tension, compression, shear and buckling. Temperature varies from -100 to 200 . Develop a qualified full-scale rig to experimentally model thermal degradation. The experimental data obtained will be used to implement the nonlinear plate/shell model into a general purpose FEA environment and the development of general nonlinear analysis procedures in general purpose finite element analysis (FEA) packages.
