Memorandum

To: Julia Wells From: Patrice Toulson Date: September 30, 2011 Re: Wrens Middle School Media Center Monthly Report for September 2011 Collaboration and Reservation: The media center was pretty busy this month. The media specialist started co-teaching with Language Arts teachers on Research. Some of the classes began their DAR essay research on the War of 1812 while other classes began researching more specific areas dealing with their content. Seventh grade students came to the media center three days. Three classes each day researched on genetic disorders. One class researched each day on the War of 1812. The eighth grade class came four days for research. Four classes did research on Georgia authors for these four days while the other class researched the War of 1812 for the four days. The sixth grade students came to the media center four days. Four classes researched on U.S. Presidents and one class researched on the War of 1812. As usual, I worked very well with Ms. D, the eighth grade teacher. We have worked so long together that we almost know what the other one is going to say. The sixth grade teacher is in her second year but is very easy to work with. The seventh grade teacher, although a first year teacher at WMS, has been working at another school for about 5 years. She is very knowledgeable about her content area. I enjoyed working with her and getting to know her better. As you can see, the media center was booked up for about three weeks with the three different classes. The media lab was reserved twenty out of twenty two days. It is nice to see that the lab is still being utilized by teachers frequently for students to be able to use technology in their classes.

Circulation: There were 202 items checked out in the non-fiction section this month. The fiction section had 134 items checked out. There was one item in the reference section checked out. Six DVDs were checked out. Three items for Read With Sarah were checked out and numerous equipment items were checked out. Items Purchased: During the month of September, we purchased two books that totaled $ 25.00. We had a subscription renewal to Jefferson Reporter that costs $ 22.00. We purchased some computer software that totaled $ 80.73. This months total costs for purchased items came to $ 127.73. Equipment Replacement: The Business and Computer Science teacher is still having a lot of problems with the computer mouse in her lab. We are having to replace numerous ones each month for her. I have discussed this with the IT director and she said that this is a district wide problem. She thinks that we got a bad batch from the company. She has started sending the bad mouse back and the company is replacing them. Whenever the teacher returns a bad mouse, I am to write down the serial number of the mouse and return the list of serial numbers as I return the mouse that each serial number goes with. Accelerated Reading Class: The accelerated reading class that is in the media center during second period is going well. All but four students have met their reading goal for the first nine weeks. Fines: We are still collecting two cents per day from students when they turn in books after the due date. We have discussed this before on whether we should continue to charge this fee. For the month of September, we received $ 12.77 in fines from students.

Books R Fun: We had the Books R Fun table set up once again in September that allows teachers to come in and purchase items that this company has for sale. I dont keep up with how much Books R Fun makes each month. However, we were able to receive three free books from the Books R Fun sales for September. As you can see, we were pretty busy in September. We had numerous students coming in to check out material as well as students coming in to do research. Circulation was pretty good this month. Numerous items were checked out for fiction and non-fiction. I hope this report helps you to stay abreast of what is happening in the media center each month. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to ask.
