Need a Massage?
It is well-known that many forms of disease are stress-related. Massage is there to help us remember what it means to relax. The physical changes massage brings to your body can have a positive effect in many areas of your life. Besides increasing relaxation and decreasing anxiety, massage has been known to lower blood pressure, increase circulation, improve recovery from injury, aide sleep and increase concentration. It can even reduce fatigue and give you more energy to handle stressful situations.

Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body. Really?

Have you sat in the dentist chair lately? Here's why you should. Your oral health is strongly linked to your overall health. So your dentist can spot problems in your body early ... just by looking in your mouth. For instance, gum disease can point to signs of diabetes. Or raise your risk for heart attack and stroke.1

You can avoid gum disease. Those scary scenarios don't need to happen to you. To prevent gum disease, brush your teeth at least twice a day. Floss away the plaque. And visit your dentist for routine checkups. Take care of your mouth, save money. Let's look at a recent study.2 In it, people who had heart disease, diabetes or a stroke had regular treatments to prevent gum disease. This group ended up having lower medical costs than those who didn't get that care. When you take care of your teeth and gums, you could save, too. John Knox Village has a comprehensive and affordable dental plan. - If youre subscribed already but need a new dentist or a gum specialist (periodontist), visit the Delta Dental of Missouri website at www.deltadentalmo.com - Not subscribed to the JKV dental plan? Check out the current years plan benefits. Look on www.MyJKV.com under My Company -> Electronic Forms -> Benefits. Make a date with your dentist today. Your body will thank you - with good health.

A CULTURE OF HEALTH and SAFETY

When Near-Miss Reporting Goes Up, Injuries Go Down.

3

Reporting and investigating near-misses* are both key elements to controlling risks before associates are injured. Thats why risk management is emphasizing near-miss reporting to reduce and eliminate injuries to associates. All associates are expected to report unsafe acts, conditions or situations. Some associates might be afraid to speak up about safety concerns because they think they might be criticized or ignored. However, the opposite is actually true. Risk managements safety incentive program, the Gold Program, continues to recognize associates for safety suggestions that are implemented. Its important to understand that not speaking up about a near-miss can result in serious injury or even death to an associate or others. Please review the examples of near-misses and the definition below so you will know how to identify one. Examples of Near-Misses An associate pushing/pulling two items at the same time to save time An associate using the wrong tool/equipment for the job An associate carrying hot liquid without a lid or cover An associate taking a short cut An associate not following policies/procedures/safety protocols An associate not using the proper personal protective equipment, etc. *Near-Miss Definition: A near-miss is a potential hazard or incident that has not resulted in any personal injury. Unsafe working conditions, unsafe employee work habits, improper use of equipment or use of malfunctioning equipment have the potential to cause work-related injuries. It is everyones responsibility to report and/or correct these potential accidents/incidents immediately. Village Wellness Associate Wellness Center 600 NW Murray Rd., Suite 110 - (816) 994-3333
In the Summit Ridge Medical Plaza adjacent to the Villager East apartment building, attached to the old Lees Summit Hospital.

*VILLAGE WELLNESS MEMBERS ARE: John Knox Village associates and dependents enrolled in the JKV/Aetna health insurance for 2011 and any associates who purchased a Village Wellness card for themselves and their dependents.
