Welcome to Explorers Inn

Your visit is important to us, because through the practice of ecotourism we have been helping to conserve the immense biodiversity of flora and fauna in the area for over 30 years. Built in 1975 and run by Peruvian Safaris S.A., Explorers Inn was the first ecolodge in the region and its presence instigated the creation of the Tambopata Reserve Zone by the Peruvian government. Preliminary reports by Robert Ridgely, Theodore Parker III and John ONeill at Explorers Inn set the world record for bird biodiversity in an area of its size. This richness in flora and fauna was recognised and a study by a number of eminent biologists was undertaken and supported by the National Geographic Society, U.S National Museum, U.S Fish and Wildlife Service, WWF and Peruvian Safaris in 1979. In their report they concluded that because of the species richness of the area, the number of undescribed species and the apparently healthy populations af rare and endangered species the need to preserve and significantly enlarge the protected area was obvious. In December 1984 Peruvian Safaris was awarded the International Trophy of Tourism & Hostelerie granted by Spains Trade Leaders Club, and in May 1986 received the Institutional Conservation Award (now the Barbara Achilles Award) granted by the Banco Continental and APECO (Peruvian Association for Nature Conservation). In 1978 the Resident Naturalist programme was set up and it is the only one of its kind in the region. In exchange for food and accomodation international biologists, often recently graduated, stay at Explorers Inn and conduct research into areas of personal interest and help in the ongoing collection of data for various species and projects. In keeping with good ecotourism practice local guides with professional training and good understanding and respect for wildlife and its conservation are employed.
