RETARDING TYPE WATER REDUCINGIPLASTICISING ADMIXTURE FOR CONCRETE

P R O D U C T I N F O R M A T I O N

DESCRIPTION
DARATARD 17D is a high performance l~quld admixture, formulated from selected high purity lignosulphonates and modifled polymers manufactured under carefully controlled conditions to produce a highly consistent, d~lute product, which ensures uniform and predictable performance. DARATARD 170 does not contain chlorides as an intentional component, and it is non-

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
DARATARD 17D can be used in virtually all wet mlx concrete applicat~ons to economic advantage, such as: Pumped concrete - to offset problems due to breakdown delays. Ready mixed concrete for long hauls/ hot weather concreting. Slipform concrete to give controlled, predictable set time. Large pours, to reduce thermal cracking effects, and avoid cold joints. High strength, high cement content, low W/C mixes - to ensure practic'al, placeable, compactable, durable concrete is produced. Precast and prestressed concretes.

PROPERTIES
Physical appearance .... Dark Brown Liquid Specific Gravity (20C)........... 1.10(+0 01 ) Total solids content ......................22-24% Air entrainment effect ........................<2% Chloride ion content by mass of admixture:... 0.2%

SPECIFICATION TYPE
Complies to the requirements of:* BS 5075, part 1 : 1982 ASTM C-494 Types B & D

ADDITION RATES
DARATARD 17D addition rates w ~ l l normally range from 350 ml to 900ml per 100kg cement, depending on mix properties required. The optimum dosage rate should be determined by mix trials for a given mix design, utlllsing the materials proposed for the contract. Where a considerable increase In set retardation is required, addition rates in excess of 900 ml/100 kg cement can be utilised, with no detrimental effect on the ultimate durabil~ty (see Effects of Overdosing). For normal use, 400 to 500 ml/ 100 kg cement will prove adequate. Note: Once retardation has ceased, strength gain develops rapldly.

ACTION
DARATARD 17D is adsorbed onto the surface of the C3A (C-lite) and C3S(A-lite) in cement. (C3A responslble for early setting effects, whllst C3S responsible for early strength gain), effectively sheathing these compounds chemically, and dispersing them, slowing down the needle-like crystal formation responslble for early setting /stiffening effects in hydrating cementitlous systems. This effectively extends the period of workability / plasticity of the concrete, slows down the setting time, and modifies the hydration reaction to produce optimum crystal growth and size, resulting in a smaller / denser crystalline structure, with fewer pores.

MIS DESIGN
Depending on the method of uslng DARATARD 17D, it may be necessary to adjust the concrete mix design to optimlse the concrete properties, and maintain the mix yield:a. If used to increase concrete workability, then, depending on the workability scope of the original mix design, it may be necessary to slightly Increase the sand content to accommodate this increased workability. b. I f water, or cement. (or both), is reduced (depending on performance requirements of the mix), then a volume adjustment to maintain yield will be necessary by adjusting the to aggregate weights relat~ve !he specific gravities ~nvolved. Your GRACE technical representative will gladly asslst you In all aspects of mix design work, includ~ng practical trlal mixes, and evaluation of results.

TECHNICAL SERVICE
To assist you in obtain~ng optimum performance from your GRACE admixtures, we offer a comprehensive advice, and site assistance service, backed by tralned personnel, experienced in concrete and adm~xture technology, and the facll~tles our fully of equipped laboratories. Our Technical Staff are available to fully assist in slte, plant or laboratory trials, and can provlde advice and assistance on mix designs, selection of sultable dispensing systems, and prov~de technical back up data etc

BENEFITS
Increased workability and longer placing time. M~xes more responsive to vibration Controlled predictable retardation of selt~ng time. Improves cohesron of mix - lessening segregation and bleed water effects. Denser, less permeable, more durable concrete. Reduces rate of heat evolution, spreading heat of hydration over longer period. , Improved compressive, flexural, and tens~le strengths of concrete at all ages.

COhlPATIBLITY
DARATARD 17D is compat~ble wlth all portland cement systems, and IS effective in mlxes incorporating PFA, and Blast Furnace Slag. DARATARD 17D IS compatible in concrete with all known adm~xture types currently available-but must be added separately to the mix, and not pre-mlxed prlor to additlon

SUPERPWSTICIZER FOR HIGH STRENGTH CONCRETE

P R O D U C T I N F O R M A T I O N

DESCRIIYTION
DAREX SUPER 20 is an aqueous chemical dispersants, based on sulphonates. The dispersingand fluidif~lng action of DAREX SUPER 20 IS remarkable, with up to 40% water reduction for same slum^ concrete. DAREX SUPER 20 does not contain chlorlde as an intentional comDonent, and it is non-corrosive.

cement contents, yet majntaining a useful concrete workability, to allow practical placing and finishing. Exceptional concrete strengths are producedin this circumstance. Considerable reduction in capillary pores ...., within concrete, reducing permeability; and improving concrete durability.

PROPERTIES
Physical apperance ....... Dark Brown Liquid Specific Gravity (20C) ............. 1.21 (+0.01) Total solids content .................... 40 - 42% Air entrainment effect. lncrease of max. 1% depending on mix design and aggregates Chloride ion content by mass. . . . . . .<0.2%.

SPECIFIC,JlTION TYPE
Complies t o t h e requirements of: B 5075 Part 3: 1985 S ASTM C-494 Types A a n d F

ADDITION RATES
As an inltial guide to trial work, the normal dosage range for most applications will lie between 400ml to 2,000ml per 100kg cement. Approximately 15% to 40% water reduction can be achieved in the range of 400ml to 2,500ml per 100kg cement. Addition rates above and below the preceding can be utli~sed depending on mix requirements and do not produce any detrimental effect on the long term durability of the concrete.

ACTION
DAREX SLIPER 20 is an extremely powerful plasticising/dispersing admixture, giving optimum dispersion of the cement particles. When added to a concrete mix of low workability (5mm to 50mm slump), the powerful dispersing action produces a dramatic increase in workability, sufficient to achieve a free flowing, almost self-levelling condition. Conversely, this powerful dispersing action can be utllised to maintain workability, accompanied by a massive water reduction effect (15 to 40% depending on dosage), enabling exceptional compressive strengths to be achieved at all ages (including early ages), with minimal effect on concrete lnltlal and final set.

HIGH STRENGTH CONCRETE

At the same concrete workability, DAREX SUPER 20 will reduce the water-cement ratio by up to 40%. Such a water reduction provides significant benefits and advantages in precast, prestressed, and post-tensioned concrete work: Improvements in compressive, flexural and bond strengths at early ages as well as long term are very substantial and permit earlier removal of formwork and faster casting cycles In precast work. Field experience shows that compressive strength can be increased by up to 100% at early ages with DAREX SUPER 20 Steam curing period of precast and prestressed concrete units can be reduced or even eliminated. DAREX SUPER 20 produces dense and durable concrete, due to the elimination of capillary porosity. Impermeability, resistance to abrasion and surface appearance of the concrete are also Improved significantly. The superior dispers~ng capacity of DAREX SUPER 20 also produces high strength concrete with high slump, for easy placement and compaction around congested reinforcement.
